My TD estate 209k has just failed its mot on:

Emissions (tester only did a visual as it failed on other things and I think he only used it as an excuse to avoid breaking the cambelt)
Corroded front to back brake pipes
Leaking power steering.

I know the rack is going to be a pig to get out if its not just a fluid pipe. I know the fuel tank might have to be dropped to do the pipes.

I paid £750 for it in June and was hoping to get a bit more life out of it, but I have found a saloon Mondeo TD MOTd to 9/07 with 90k with a noisy turbo. I am considering swapping my quiet turbo for the noisy one has anyone any experience with getting it out?

Only on a Peugeot 405 TD. The rad had to come out and the engine tilted forwards as far as it would go, and then a bit more! In short, it's a pain to do but do-able in about 3-4 hours. At least on a 405, that is. Not sure how a Mondeo would take much longer.

Should be the same process I would imagine - remove intercooler, undo mount, tilt engine forward, remove mainfolds, remove turbo, put it back together.

Tweaking the turbo before fitting it is optional!

Just remember to unplug the fuel-stop solenoid and try and start the engine for 10 seconds. Do this 3 times then plug it back in and start it up to 'prime' the turbo. Prepare for fog!

Driving N bound on the A34 just now I saw a new Mini on a transporter, with the rear side windows covered over with vinyl, and the logo of Hampshire Police on the vivyl and a Police Community Support Officer sticker on the rear bumper.

Fashion victim or what? Are they being sponsored by BMW? Read more

They'll be worth a look at in 3 yers time, when de-fleeted.

Hampshire come only second to Thames Vally as well presented & EXCEPTIONALLY well documented service records.

They'll be good value in the auction!

'm well aware that I need to tread carefully to avoid offending the moderators and I apologise if I have got it wrong.

I was upset (actually, more than upset) yesterday to receive through the post a Parking Charge Notice from a company employed by B & Q to manage one of its car parks, alleging my car was parked for 50 minutes over the allowed two hours of free parking. The company concerned is not unknown to the media for its sharp practice, failure to follow guidelines etc.

I got the Notice as the registered keeper of the vehicle, my name and address supplied by DVLA, an issue that has been well debated on this forum and elsewhere. Leaving this and the odious reputation of the company on side for the moment, I decided to concentrate on the validity of the PCN.

Research on this matter turned up a number of points. The demand for money hinges on an implied contract the parking management company claim was entered into by the vehicle being left in the car park. However, any such contract could only have been entered into by the driver of the car. As the keeper, I am not bound to reveal who this was – remember, we are dealing with a private company here, not the police or the local authority.

The company has not always clearly displayed properly worded notices and this may also affect the validity of the implied contract.

There is also the matter of the amount claimed – in my case, £125 for the 50 minutes it is alleged I am being charged for, or £75 for prompt payment. Not a reasonable amount, one might say.

Some advice I have seen suggests ignoring the notice, on the basis that the company will not want to see their case examined in court – which presumably would be the small claims court, as this is a civil matter.

However, the matter is now resolved, for me at least, though I wonder how many other motorists have meekly paid up, as indeed I first thought of doing. By chance I came upon a B & Q helpline dedicated to this issue. I phoned it, gave the details of the PCN and made further, carefully phrased remarks including some of the issues above, the effect on B & Q's reputation and so on. I was phoned back and the charge was waived on the basis that “we don’t want to lose customers – but don’t do it again.” The number is 0845 6024946 – mods, I hope there is no problem with putting this.

I hope my experience will give others in a similar position the means to challenge unreasonable parking charges on private land. I’m happy to give more info by e-mail. Read more

Post your experiences on PePiPoo. Send B&Q an invoice for your time and expenses. Most parking "restrictions" are invalid and rely on bullying to achieve payment. If it happens again, don't bother replying to the letter.

"But don't do it again" !!!! .... laughable.

Due to the birth of my 3rd in January we are looking for a 7 seater to replace the Mondeo.

After much debate we have come up with a shortlist of 2. I know very short but I want japanese for the reliability and good spec.

Grandis
Avensis Verso

I have £12k max to spend so petrol Grandis only but can go for either on Verso.

Grandis will be 2004/04 Verso 02/03, Grandis slightly better spec but worst depreciation.

Anyone owned any of these or have any comments.

Thanks Read more

Thanks for replies especially from an owner.

Went to look at weekend, Avensis Verso at dealer, 51 reg petrol GS for 10.5k, 42k on the clock. Very basic, lots of space but just DULL as well as overpriced.

Went to see 05 Grandis Classic, £11.5k with 12k miles, very nice with good spec even for the base model and still 18 months warranty left. Deffo favourite and the wife liked it as well.

Only problem is trading in my Mondeo Zetec estate with 86k miles, I feel I will get shafted on it.

Unbelievable this one. The Picasso went into Autotrader this week, and as expected got the sales call this morning- usual carp we can match your car blah blah blah.

Having asked them numerous times not to call me in the past I was ready for them. Asked them to hold on for a moment, and put the mobile on my desk. Eventually he hung up- but kept calling back, so rejected the call. The last time he left a profanity laden abusive message on answerphone for me.

Have called Ofcom, Autotrader, Vodafone etc about this- but great way to do business. If they call again will demand to speak to a manager. If they don't call, well my trick worked- made me laugh out loud and obviously I wound them up instead of other way round. Read more

I'm trying to help a friend with an early MX5 and we need to get the wheels off for refurbishing. Are the support points at the jacking points (on some cars they're not)? If not, please advise. Read more

Thanks again, folks. Job done in a very awkward position: a narrow street in which car has to be up against the pavement, so some extra lifting was necessary to get the nearside wheels off. I've put the axle stands (topped with thick cardboard) at the ends of the sills where the jacking points are (between the semi-circles cut out of the sills).

I've recently bought Peugeot 106 M plate 1.5D and so far its been Okish. Not very happy with the car after changing the drive shaft, radiator etc.. Now I've got another problem. Water is leaking somewhere inside the car. Every morning I've a bit of water on the mat at the driver's side. I've looked for source of leakage under the steering area but can't seem to figure it out. I'm sure somewhere here knows exactly where its leaking from and if its easy and cheap to repair? I'm really thinking of selling this car and buying a Polo. Read more

Question 306 steering
cumfray1

Friend has just bought a P plate facelift 306 which when driving feels like the steering wheel is tugging NOT juddering. She had the wheels balanced & tracked yesterday which made the steering much better but still tugs. When u let go of the wheel the car heads left towards the kerb, as the tracking has been done, where is the next best place to start to cure the tugging? TIA Read more

Dynamic Dave

Was the car tracked with the steering in the centre? If not, then *maybe* the PAS is centralising the steering rack but the tracking hasn't been set accordingly.

I am hoping someone will be able to help PLEASE! I own a 2001/Y scenic 1.9 dci. Over the last few months I have noticed a loss of power especially when going up hills (usually at about 10mph if I'm lucky!) I took the car to someone who did a clip test and diagnosed that all 4 glo plugs were inoperative and my usual mechanic changed them that day at a fraction of the cost that I was quoted. This made absolutely no difference to the performance and I have since taken the car elsewhere and have been advised that the problem may be the air mass meter. The mechanic at this garage has disconnected the AMM and asked me to drive the car around for the next few days to see if there is any improvement. My question is, will the disconnection of the AMM damage the engine of my vehicle in any way? And if this turns out not to be the problem has anyone any ideas?
Thanking you in anticipation. Read more

Lizzie

Have now had vehicle returned from garage with AMM disconnected and all seems fine. Have loads of power and engine is not struggling when under load. The fault looks as though it is with the AMM and I will be running around in it over the weekend to make sure. Garage have said if the fault does not return they will order new AMM next week.
Thank you all once again for your advice and I will be be recommending this site to everyone I know. Keep up the good work!
From a very grateful lady!
