Canvassers using Autotrader - PW
Unbelievable this one. The Picasso went into Autotrader this week, and as expected got the sales call this morning- usual carp we can match your car blah blah blah.

Having asked them numerous times not to call me in the past I was ready for them. Asked them to hold on for a moment, and put the mobile on my desk. Eventually he hung up- but kept calling back, so rejected the call. The last time he left a profanity laden abusive message on answerphone for me.

Have called Ofcom, Autotrader, Vodafone etc about this- but great way to do business. If they call again will demand to speak to a manager. If they don't call, well my trick worked- made me laugh out loud and obviously I wound them up instead of other way round.

Nice one. I did a similar thing with one of those wretched cold callers (not Autotrader) and left the receiver on my desk whilst I made myself a nice cup of coffee.

We're registered with TPS, when cold called I ask for contact details so we can inform the authorities, that soon gets rid of them.
Someone else I heard of when cold called for conservatories acts interested & wants to order one, then they ask for the address, flat 50, 14th floor accacia Walk........

Yes we are with TPS now which is a mixed blessing. Stopped the calls but also stopped my fun :-(
I have no problem with people earning a genuine living but these automated calls are a menace.

Yes they are a nuisance and many people fall for their lies/broken promises.

One way which stops most of them is when you are placing the adv. in Autotrader put 'NO CANVASSING PHONE CALLS PLEASE'

Put this in the 'web' version (its free) of your adv.
(they mostly use the 'web' to get your details )

Worked for me

Thanks for the comments about TPS- am with TPS but forgot to add my mobile when I switched providers last year. They ignored the No Canvassers bit in my last ad so didnt bother with it this time. To be honest, half of me wanted them to call just to do this as they really wound me up when I sold the Mondeo.

At the very least it has made everyone in my office laugh.

And as always when discussing canvassers and autotrader I will tell the same story - at some point in the past I was selling a car and provided mobile number in my add, but paid for the autotrader advert with credit card registered to my workplace address and workplace phone number in payment section. Imagine my shock when Cardata called me in my office, on the number provided with CC details, not the one in the advert and then even sent a letter to my name but workplace address. Canvassers have their business deeply rooted into autotrader and although noone will admitt it officialy I think both parties draw financial gains from this partnership...

For a bit of fun ask the caller for their home telephone number and say you will call them back later tonight. When they reply that they can't do that just reply with a "then you know how I feel" and put the phone down.
Canvassers using Autotrader - bell boy
i tell them to put all details in the post
another one i used yesterday was a company again trying to halve my company phone bill, (they always say they are ringing on behalf of bt which they are not and before anybody says anything i complained to ofcom and advised bt and was told there is nothing can be done with these 3 times a week calls i get)i told said caller that i was happy giving bt lots of my money and he said why? because im a bt shareholder i said he quickly made an excuse and went ,so i will be using that one again

We are registered with TPS but still get the odd calls.
I do a VERY abrupt" I'm sorry I'm not interested " after 10 seconds and put the phone down. Seems to work well - no recalls.

You give them 10 seconds? I'm impressed, you have more patience than me. I just give them a "I'm not interested, please don't phone again" and hang up as soon as I realise it's a cold call. It's actually kinder, the poor sods are probably on commission only, so I'm actually saving them money..
Canvassers using Autotrader - runboy
Just say "only the other day my mum/dad /boss said they were interested in the "product" you are selling, I'll go get one of them".....this gets the salesperson juices flowing ready for a sale and you just leave the receiver on the table.

See how long the wait and maybe start a sweepstake at work for charity.....

Oh how some bright marketing spark has ruined our lives. You used to be able to have a peaceful day at work and at home, never bothered by telemarketing. The result is now that 60% of all homes are not listed in the phone book and many more people use TPS to stop this annoying direct sales contact. The firm Kitchens Direct must have contacted me at home over 40 times in about 3 years, despite never having ever contacting them and just having had a new kitchen fitted. Eventually I managed to speak to a supervisor and mentioned TPS, never heard from them again.

The biggest problem I find is the auto diallers that hang up as soon as you answer, because they have no one to handle the call.

At work I find all marketing calls a massive interuption to my work, it either stops me completing some intricate work or stops me dealing with a customer. So all telemarketers get very short shrift from me.

Re the thread issue of canvassers using Autotrader. With the last 3 cars I have sold on Autotrader, they all sold to the first person to view and by the time I was canvassed, the car was already sold. I loved telling them Autotrader had done the job and their dubious services were of no use to me.

I've seen this plenty of times on here, and I've just this second twigged that it's a pair of scissors. I always wondered what the 8 was for. I think I need to start doing crosswords or something to get the old grey cells working properly.

Me as well, took me some time to work out what DD was trying to say.
I wonder if he has anymore keyboard tricks up his sleeve?
