We are registered with TPS but still get the odd calls.
I do a VERY abrupt" I'm sorry I'm not interested " after 10 seconds and put the phone down. Seems to work well - no recalls.

You give them 10 seconds? I'm impressed, you have more patience than me. I just give them a "I'm not interested, please don't phone again" and hang up as soon as I realise it's a cold call. It's actually kinder, the poor sods are probably on commission only, so I'm actually saving them money..

Just say "only the other day my mum/dad /boss said they were interested in the "product" you are selling, I'll go get one of them".....this gets the salesperson juices flowing ready for a sale and you just leave the receiver on the table.
See how long the wait and maybe start a sweepstake at work for charity.....

Oh how some bright marketing spark has ruined our lives. You used to be able to have a peaceful day at work and at home, never bothered by telemarketing. The result is now that 60% of all homes are not listed in the phone book and many more people use TPS to stop this annoying direct sales contact. The firm Kitchens Direct must have contacted me at home over 40 times in about 3 years, despite never having ever contacting them and just having had a new kitchen fitted. Eventually I managed to speak to a supervisor and mentioned TPS, never heard from them again.
The biggest problem I find is the auto diallers that hang up as soon as you answer, because they have no one to handle the call.
At work I find all marketing calls a massive interuption to my work, it either stops me completing some intricate work or stops me dealing with a customer. So all telemarketers get very short shrift from me.
Re the thread issue of canvassers using Autotrader. With the last 3 cars I have sold on Autotrader, they all sold to the first person to view and by the time I was canvassed, the car was already sold. I loved telling them Autotrader had done the job and their dubious services were of no use to me.

8< SNIP
I've seen this plenty of times on here, and I've just this second twigged that it's a pair of scissors. I always wondered what the 8 was for. I think I need to start doing crosswords or something to get the old grey cells working properly.

Me as well, took me some time to work out what DD was trying to say.
I wonder if he has anymore keyboard tricks up his sleeve?
