Took my 95N Fiesta classic 1.8 diesel for it's MOT today and it failed on the following:
-both front and 1 rear brake pipe corroded (1 rear was done last year)
-Offside front suspension balljoint escessive play
-hand brake efficiency only 13% (they say it needs a new cable, I reckon it just wants the adjstment tighting)
All in they quoted me £300 to get it to pass. I don't think it's worth it. The car has done 110k, current MOT runs out at the end of Dec as does the Tax.

Glad you got it sorted. I couldn't personally bring myself to scrap a car with that little wrong with it, but I'm daft and get emotionally attached to cars.
Cheers

This subject is the result from yet another interesting article in the latest edition of Car magazine. They have interviewed Takeo Fukui - CEO of a well known car company and his views are that independence suits car companies best and I suppose that when you consider who are the most successful car companies at the moment (financially) they are all indpendent - BMW, Toyota & Honda. Any history these had with mergers etc ended in disaster for them (particularly Honda and BMW with Rover).
He states that too much is made of platform sharing and common componenets and it does not necessarily make cars cheaper, it makes for compromises. He thinks platform sharing is now a very old fashioned engineering way of thinking. So should other companies keep doing it and in fact do we buy compromised cars when we buy a car that shares componenets and platforms with other models and makes ?

Including BMC, Austin, Rover in any discussion is a bit pointless as they never used the platforms they already had.
Manufacturers have usually continued platforms from one model to another as a continuous development / cost saving measure - eg Ford Escort Mk1 / 2 were built on the same platform (floorpan, suspension, transmission, engines) and there are many other examples.
BMC never developed / evolved the platforms for any of it's models, a trait followed by Austin-Rover and Rover. They always kept models in production too long and incurred the cost of completely new replacements.
Just think what might have been if the BMC 1100/1300 platform had been evolved (including engine/gearbox).
When i get the dell pop up it takes up the whole screen and has no x to get rid of it,no swearing but its annoying.
can you drop it of make it more better??
Cheers ray Read more
As per what Pugugly said.
Finally, in answer to Dulwich Estate's question:- "But HJ - if the Dell ad fills the whole screen you don't have anything to click on. As far as I know (and I really know nothing - just what others tell me) you either need to do a ctrl W or switch off."
If you want to return to the HJ page, then pressing Alt Tab will switch between the two windows you have running and bring the HJ page to the front of the popup.

1995 clio 1.4 auotomatic, RAC guy said my timing belt had gone, when it happened there was no unusual noise from the engine the car just drifted to a stop, do I definately have engine damage or could I be lucky. Read more
Are you sure it isn't the automatic gearbox which has failed - the engine is running or not?
You are very lucky also if this is still working on a Clio of that age, never mind the timing belt.
Right guys, thinking about buying one of these from an auction, like an ex company one. There seems to be a few about and i've signed up to auction view. Just wondering what to look out for? Checked the Car-by-Car Breakdown but i thought i'd get some feedback from actual owners?
Thanks in advance...

Just to add, some of the regular traders on ebay often seem to sell these sort of cars which might also be worth a look.

Seriously, that's a good facelift on the 206 to make into the C2 China, really good styling job.
My 99 T reg Saab 9-5 has developed a miss-fire/hesitation when accelerating, more noticeable at lower speed and heavier acceleration, but can occur at any speed. I've changed the plugs but so far that's all. My local garage will look at it and, as an ex-Saab owner, will have experience and knowledge of the car, but I was wondering if a Saab dealer would have better diagnostic equipment? Will diagnostic equipment pinpoint such a fault ? Read more
Thanks for all your help so far.
My central locking system fails to work when locking the doors. The doors always open succesfully from the remote and the alarm will also activate and de-activate so there is no problem with the infra-red detection, The boot pump does not run during locking but always runs on opening so something is lost between the infra-red and the pump. This fault sometimes clears during Hot weather so I suspect it's damp related, also the auto window close fails if the locking does not work. Are ther sensors in the doors or is the only tie in with the interior mirror. Any help would be great!! Read more
Find the "comfort control module" and check it's not wet, or has been wet. I'm not familiar with your particular model, but on some MB vehicles of this vintage, it's in the boot at the bottom and gets wet. Catch it before it's wrecked - they're expensive.

Micky, do a 'Google' search and you'll see that it was back in 2004 and covered by quite a few news agencies.
