I have a 2003 (53 plate) Audi 1.9 TDI (100bhp) which has done 32,000 miles. All was well until about 2 months ago, when it suddenly cut out when travelling at approx. 30 mph. It was worrying because not only did I lose engine power, but I also lost the power steering along with the electrics. However, I had no problem re-starting and driving away. It was almost due for a service, so I took it to my local Audi dealer to do the service and investigate the problem. They could find no problem and could only advise me to let them know if it happened again. Two weeks later it did happen again, this time preceeded by a jerky loss of power followed by a sudden jolt while driving uphill. I took it back to the dealer and again they could find nothing wrong. Although it normally performs flawlessly, I have an uneasy feeling every time I take it out that the problem could arise again. I've heard that this problem is not unknown with the 1.9 105PS engine and that VAG don't have a solution. Has anyone had a similar problem and if so could they offer any advice? Thanks in anticipation. Read more
Hi all,
Thinking of moving on from the Furby and getting an MX5. I've found a lovely car with low miles, right colour, hard top, leather...exactly what I need.
However
It's an automatic. I've not really got a problem with this, it drives very well and I'm not such a sporting type that I'd ever miss the manual. The problem really is this
The dealer tells me that it's a UK car, but I can find nothing about UK MX5s autos anywhere they all seem to be imports.
If anyone has knowledge of these cars, I'd appreciate their opinions (good/bad points over manual) and an idea of what mpg I would be likely to achieve.
Or if anyone is better at Googleing than me, any good websites would be appreciated - I've tried the UK owners club site, but no specs there!
And if it is an import, what are the differences to owning a UK car - insurances, MOTs, etc. It's >3years old and currently has an MOT so I'm guessing it's type approved - the speedo is in mph.
Cheers everyone, any info / opinions that don't include me changing jobs to Toni&Guy would be great. Virtual pints to the best three answers!!

Martin, It wasn't meant as a real critisism of the car, just a comparison. Compared to how the 60's Elan was set up, the MX5 feels hard and a bit harsh. The car is on Pirrelli P6000 195/50/15's (genuine Mazda wheels).
The build quality, etc is excellent and it is a good all round sports car, lots of fun when I can get my hands on it.
I suppose I am getting older and used to Xantia ride quality!
Mysterious - it packed up on Thursday. Did the simple checks nothing seemed amiss. Resolved to booking it in to a dealer this week however it's back up again, it works as it always did. At one point there was a Police car parked next to it, could Airwave/Tetra have puddled it's brain ? Read more
Yes DD I frequently do that - on the chin actually. Looking back to Thursday afternoon the car would have been parked up next to Police car for a couple of hours. Really odd this, it happened on my 330 at a Police HQ. BMW Assist put this down to the transmitter there and it never failed again. Not too worried about it as the warranty covers it but odd.
Hi can anyone tell me if the HPI REPORTS that one can get from Ebay are as good/comprehensive as any of the other ways?
I'm pretty sure the cars straight but if its a case of the £6.99 ebay one not being as good then I'll pay up for one of the others.
Also while I'm seeking advise this particular car has had its reg no. changed, the new plates on the vehicle were provided by a HONDA dealer, and a quick search on DVLA confirms that the old '51 plate is now running round on a 2006 Honda, and that the new '51 plate is on the vehicle I'm buying.
The numbers on car all match, windscreen, boot, engine bay, theres DVLA docs confirming the change.
Just a quick a quick q to the more experienced forum members ..............does it all sound ok or is there anything else I should be doing?
Cheers Read more
I posted on here last week concerning a Laguna on ebay that I had discovered was a Cat D write-off. That was from a check from www.mycarcheck.com which cost £9.99. They emailed me a .pdf report which contained details on the car model, engine number etc plus number of keepers, date of last change of ownership, colour changes, plate transfers, scrapped, exported, stolen and insurance write-off.
Not quite as detailed as the ebay report, however I couldn't do one of these as the seller hadn't included the vehicle reg in the item description which you need to click on to activate the link to the report page. The ebay report, as well as the above, also includes finance check, security register, insurance registered theft, mileage check and a valuation.
So my advice would be, if the seller has listed the item using the vehicle reg, then go for the ebay report. It covers all the basics and its cheaper.
Yesterday my wife was driving our Mazda Tribute (3 1/2 yr old, 30 000 miles) and she noticed that, on starting the engine from cold, it revved up rapidly to approx. 3000 rpm a few times, the engine was roaring and revving itself for a good few seconds without the accelerator being touched.
I drove the car today but found nothing wrong. I know very little about cars but I suspect it could be the injection system playing up, I'm thinking sticking valve maybe. Obviously, if it happens again regularly I will need to take it to the Mazda garage.
1) Am I right about sticking valve ?
2) What else can it be ? (is it likely to be serious?)
3) We live 1 mile away from the sea, somebody suggested to us that it could be due to the salt air, is that likely ?
4) Anything SIMPLE we could do to alleviate problem if it happens again ? Read more
Can anybody help with my questions, any help would be greatly appreicated, thank you.
Im not sure if this is related to my issues with cooling but may well be.
I can hear a sound much like bubbling/gurgling water coming from anywhere between the gearstick and the dashboard.
My car is still running slightly cool and Im going to change the thermostat again, but it was starting to do this before the thermostat was ever changed and the car was running normally, so Im not sure its related.
The strangest thing about it is that it only happens when the car is accelarting, usually between 1/4 and 1/2 throttle and not so much at higher revs.
My first instinct was that the sound is coming from the heater if not being the cause.
Ive never had a car that does this so Im abit lost as to what it could be? Read more
is the coolant turning dark ?
sounds like poss head gasket /cracked head

Just wondering if anyone out there can shed any light on a problem I had many years ago with a Ford truck. (I worked at main dealer then). Driver complained that the cab heater wasn't getting warm. Temp gauge was reading low even after a long run. Both thermostats were changed and radiator was checked against specs for that model. There was no improvement so the driver put cardboard agains bottom of radiator and went away happy. 2 weeks later the engine overheated causing severe damage. Any ideas what the original problem may have been?

Ah the joys of a stuck-open thermostat, last year I think it was I had been to see a friend in Worthing travelling in my much abused WORKING Land Rover Defender Diesel, a petrol tanker had gone over on the M25, of course had to find a different way round, stuck in traffic in cool weather with a cold-running engine. Brilliant. The heater output was so pathetic I decided the engine needed the heat more than I did so switched it off..Glad to get home (North Essex) I can tell you! One new thermostat later it was back to its usual performance, not as bad as some people will lead you to believe!!
John Deere tractor engines also sometimes have two thermostats.
In my experience wax type thermostats stick open, am I right in thinking the old bellows type often did the opposite?
James.
M25 is 20 years old today.

Adam, SFAIK the PACE route will lead to a court hearing/summons and one then applies for a deferment pending the result of a UK HightCourt case whose outcome in turn depends on a a EU Court of Human Rights ruling. Should get hearing dropped or psotponed until at least February 2007 - more information and updates at www.pepipoo.com

I have the 130BHP version of this car, and I used to have a problem with excessively easy stalling when pulling away. No problem was ever found and the problem just went away never to return.
