I am having no joy with this apparently simple task. The Haynes manual says I should be able to unscrew the gearknob.

I have pulled up the gaiter, but, after an almighty effort, I have managed only to get the upper part of the knob to turn. When I look at the new gearknob there seems to be no screw thread inside, only a split metal sleeve, so I am now wondering if the instruction to unscrew is correct, or whether it is just a tight push-fit. I have also tried hammering the gearknob up from underneath, though it is difficult to bring much force to bear, but without success.

Any thoughts, please?

mate, on my old 1995 and a 1996 the knobs just unscrewed off....on one I had to hold the gear stick with a set of mole gribs because the stick rotated also......

After being turned down for promotion yet again, I think it's time for me to look for a new career. Been thinking of training to be a driving instructor. There always seems to be a few adverts in the papers for these jobs, I suppose what puts most people off is the initial cost of the training (about £2000 IIRC?)

Are there any driving instructors on here that could give a few words of advice? Would be very much appreciated.

As an employee of many years standing myself I regret not having branched out on my own years ago. I might sink, I might swim but it would be under my control.

Hi

Can anyone offer any advice? I have a 2006 Audi A4 with a single cd concert 2 stereo installed. I would like to install an audi 6 cd changer in the glove box. However, I do not know if the concert 2 stereo supports cd changers? Also, how complicated is it to install the cd changer (if possible) and connect it to the back of the concert 2? I presume I would need to remove the concert 2 from the dash and somehow get to the back of the dash in through the glove box?

Any help and advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks. Read more

I had the same dilemma with my A4 Avant. There was no wiring loom connector in the boot as these are only apparently designed for the glovebox changer. So due to the cost of getting the changfer and the new glove box lining required to accomodate the changer, I went down a different route. Instead I installed an Alpine MP3 compatible head unit with the neccesary off the shelf wirining adapter. I found this a better solution than the autochanger as you can fit up to 18 MP3 concerted CD's on one MP3 CD and it works better anyway than the changer, in terms of the speed of album changes etc.
This was a much cheaper option than retro-fitting the glovebox mounted changer.

Reading the recent thread about the persecution of 4 x 4s, I saw that 'petrol rationing' was mentioned. This reminded me of a time - I think about 1973 - when I was allocated petrol coupons for my motorbike. I'm not sure, however, that I ever had to use them - maybe the crisis passed. I remember, at the time, being pretty miffed because owning my motorcycle only entitled me to a reduced number of coupons compared to, say, a car. I felt that everyone should be entitled to the same amount of fuel and should be allowed to use it as they wished.

Can anyone confirm when petrol rationing coupons have been issued since ww2 - and if they were actually used?

Also, if we should end up in a situation where petrol was rationed again, should the owner of a thirsty car be entitled to more than, say, a fuel efficient motorcyclist? Read more

>>>I suppose that, if coupons were to be unfairly distributed as before, then the trick would be to register your gazz guzzler(s) and get the coupons, but use the fuel in your 100mpg motor scooter to get from A to B without walking ;-)<<<

That is exactly what I did in 1956/57. I had saved up for a Lambretta and purchased same in 1955 (oh how I loved that machine:o). Somewhat unexpectedly, I was provided with my first company car in the spring of 1956....a Ford Anglia...not exactly a gazz guzzler... and when rationing came along I was able to travel on two wheels with the petrol intended for the car....back then skidlids had only just been invented and they did not *have* to be used.

Ah, those were the days!! Imagine driving by scooter from Manchester to London and back, using the A6 throughout....and enjoying every moment.

Hi I have a 98 Passat V6 Syncro and it has a strange random starting issue?

The car runs great with no issues or fault codes stored etc but every now and again when I come to start it it fires OK but then cuts out and struggles to start i.e. turns over very slowly and queitly (Like a flat Battery but this is not the case) and to start it I will need to hold the throttle to the floor and keep turning it over until it fires, may take 2-3 attempts as soon as it has started it runs very rougth but when settled down runs great again with no issues???

Anyone know where to start looking, suspect it only does this when the car hasn't been used for a couple of days so could be time related but appears very random????

Thanks for your help in advance?

I'd second checking the earth. I had a similar problen on my '97 VW. The earth strap on the starter motor looked ok, but when poked with a screwdriver was found to be very corroded. I changed the earth strap and all was cured.

i used to find that when you put 1600 mk 2 cortina engines with an escort bashed sump on them into the mk 1 / 2 escort bodies that you used to get an oil pick up problem as you took a corner too fast and the idiot light came on.
Dry sumping was way too dear though so you just put an extra pint of duckhams 20/50 in the sump (no cats in those days) and cut down a bit on the bravado

Looking at 3 year-old versions of the two model, you can either get a Corolla 190 for around GBP5-6k or a Celica 140 for around GBP6-7k. The question is which is the better option? Many thanks, Gazza Read more

I think it all depend on what your motoring needs/wants are.
The Corolla will be more practical and carry 4 in comfort.
If you want the low driving position etc then the Celica will fit better.
When it comes to reliability - neither will be a problem and both will last forever.
Check for dashboard & tailgate rattles on the Corolla though.

I have a 1992 Vauxhall Senator 2.6 Diplomat. and it needs a new exhaust. The system on the car at present splits into 2 pipes after the downpipe and has 2 cats, 2 centre boxes yet only a single back box.

My query is

A, Can I De-cat this car legally? and

B, can i run a bigger bore (same diametre as downpipe) instead of using 2 pipes?

C, Anyone know where in Scotland (preferbly Edinburgh) I can get a new system made to order?

I'm not sure if this is described on the sites linked to above, but, going one stage further, you can also revert the engine to open loop operation by earthing terminal 20 of the engine management unit. Practically, this means that the engine management unit will not use the lambda sensors and will instead rely on its own internal maps, which should give better performance and/or economy depending upon the operating point.
