Is it worth leasing for "Joe Public"? I know it's a broad statement but has anybody out there got any definate views, pro/cons etc. I'm just talking about basic rental for a couple of years, no option to buy or balloon payment, just a way of getting a new/nearly new car without digging into hard earned savings. Any comments would be appreciated.
Cheers

PS Just having second thoughts about chopping my CRV in for a new CRV diesel and shelling out all that cash, thinking it might be cheaper to "rent" a second car hence the question Read more
Somebody reversed into my 2004 Fiesta bumper with just enough force to crack the shiny top surface and cause one small area to curl upwards. Its bound to be caught on the clothing of the next person who walks by. Does anybody know of a glue that will stick it down or other repair procedure ? Superglue doesnt seem to work. Read more
Thanks for the tips, I'll let you know how I get on.

Hi,
I have a 2001 Y-Reg coupe (the V6 model) that is coming up for its 60,000 mile service. Now that the extended warranty has expired, I'm inclined to take it to my local garage (proven to be honest and reliable) rather than pay the premium and get my local dealership to do it. Is there anything I would be missing out on by doing so? Peugeot talk about specialist equipment, etc, but I don't know how significant that is. On the other hand,
I don't want to take it to the local garage and find they miss something a Peugeot dealer would have spotted.
Any advice (or pointers to relevant threads) appreciated. Read more
It might be worth having a look on the www.peugeot406coupe.com forums to see if any members there can recommend a good garage..
Apologies if you know about this site already
What are the classic chav cars these days???
I recently asked a question about buying a high mileage Lexus 1S 200. Many Thanks for all comments - it was one that more or less described them as 'flash-harry' cars that got me wondering.(I know that a flash-harry is not necessarily a chav, but I'm thinking worst-case scenario here).
Cheers

My 2.0 red hatch against your 1.8 gold saloon? Easy peasy! Just wait till I put my hoodie on and I'll be there.

Apologies for what is a repeat posting I know - but for the benefit of new members or those who may have forgotten, the British Pathe website is a truly wonderful resource containing thousands of archive films.
I just put "transport" into the database, returning about 800 hits, and have watched a film about training driving instructors in the fifties (split screen Morris Minors everywhere), one about testing how far you can tilt a London Bus before it falls over (28 degrees) and a superb trenching machine used to lay gas pipes (handy for the housewife). They tested for leaks with radioactivity in their aertex shirts.
All free at low but quite watchable resolution. No connection other than I like it very much.

Apparently a guard at Buckingham Palace asked the same question of the great man when he was there to receive his gong and he replied "No, Sir Stirling Moss actually".
Also, the traffic cop who pulled Ayrton Senna on the M25 asked him whether if he thought he was Nigel Mansell. Only after some autographs did they believe who he was. That could have been nasty "So, we've got a comedian here have we...?"
And... apparently either the same or a different set of officers (I think Senna was a serial offender!) sent Mansell a video of their chase with a note saying "At lease we caught him" or some such.
Hello people, i have a bit of a difficult descision on my hands and would be very grateful for any help given. I'm 23 year old male soon to be 24. I've driven the same car for 6 years and have decided its time for a change.
I'm currently looking for a new car at the moment and have narrowed my choices down to...
Mark 2 golf gti 16v OR Astra GSI 16v...
insurance is roughly the same as are parts...
performance is better with the astra BUT it comes with the 'boy racer' tag.
The VW will be slower but the styling speaks for itself on old GTIs.
Any advice would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Other way round I think.
True.
The engine in both is Mazda. They share components, but are externally at least, different cars (hatch/boot).
This is actually a good thing, you can buy spare parts at ford prices.
Hi all,
Just thought I'd share the arrival of my daughter Amelie Rachel who arrived on Friday night :-)
Motoring link - we got stuck in traffic on way to hospital so I had to call an ambulance to take SWMBO and don't new borns look small in car seats :-) Read more
Thank you to all the BR Aunts and Uncles!
5 days in and we're now experiencing short sleep bursts and after 24 hours of silence, she is now making up for it!! She's completely worth it though!
So far, my car is able to take the bits and pieces that we need, but I'm sure we'll soon start running out places to put things in the boot! The only thing we have a problem with is the length of the seatbelts being too short in the back to go around the car seat so she has to sit in the front with me (at least I don't have a passenger airbag!)
I have seen you mention an auto box specialist on a couple of occasions, but cant find the topics any where, Any chance of the details? Got a problem with a cvt multitronic audi surging at low revs.
Thanks

Well, FATE is your best bet - URL already given.
Derek King at 'The Mechanical Workshop' in Leicestershire has been doing auto for about 30 years and gets a lot of Ford CVT's to rebuild. To be honest I suspect few transmission repairers have seen an Audi Multitronic - most will still be within the dealer network and major repairs will be 'unit swaps'.
Having seen the service manual for a Multitronic I would say its best to get shot of it if its your own car. The technology is fraught to say the least - they depend on about 50 variables being 'spot on' to work properly - looks a complete nightmare to repair - if indeed its possible (could be Audi-only factory rebuild).
With all the different factors such as oil prices, congestion, parking, corporate social responsibility, environmental concerns, company car schemes etc, is it just a matter of time before luxury cars are extinct?
Currently, since a lot of big cars with big engines depreciate so rapidly, they are good value for money at 3-5 years old.
Will this continue to be the case?
Will the government make harsher changes to taxes to motivate you out of that 10 year old 7 series and into a newer small car?
Some industry planners have mentioned that the UK luxury car market will shrink by 25% over the next few years. Read more
I wouldn't call myself rich but just over a year ago we had enough savings to buy, say, a brand-new Land Rover Discovery TDV6. But we used it to pay off our mortgage and I still drive round in an 11 year-old car worth £1000 at most!!

Thanks DD,
