Mr Hula

Does anyone know if there is much of a difference between the various paint sealers? A-Glaze, SuperGuard, Diamond Sheild etc?

Price wise A-Glaze and SuperGuard seem around the same price if done at a dealer, around £300 for inside and out. Diamond seems a bit cheaper. Do they work? Certainly A-Glaze comes with a 3-year guarantee and in theory at least you don't need to polish for 3 years or so. I would pay £3K for that alone. Read more

A tale of two diesels..For the same money: a new citroen C4 2.0Hdi, or a six month old, 7K miles on the clock, Nissan Primera 2.2Td. Wanted for upcoming spate of long motorway journeys, specific requirements comfort, reasonable frugality, few toys, bit of fun. Which??
PS Does the very soft accelerator on the C4 get tiring after a while? On the test drive I felt I had to keep my foot slightly elevated to avoid surging ahead - it offered no support.Dealer said no-one else has ever complained - do you get used to it or have I got odd legs?! Read more

Hi DD,

Great moderating. And extremely quick, might I add. I should have known better, shouldn't I?

Thanks for changing it.

The fat boys who can't act and advertise the Zafira
The grisly puppets with silly accents who advertise Dolmio sauces

The Audi ad is vile. As a confirmed arachnophobe, I am severely tempted to sue Audi for the nightmares I suffer every time I've seen it. But then again, I've now ensured that I will never ever buy an Audi.....

Love the Vauxhall kids but I'd never buy a Meriva/Zafira thing anyway.

As for those Men & Motors ads, just how old are they? Mobile phones the size of bricks, those girls must be claiming their pensions by now!

How do I make sure I dont get my fingers burnt buying online?

I am considering buying a C4 from 'newcitroendeals.co.uk', a branch of lowpricecars.co.uk - as with many of these sites it seems very hard to tell if one is simply handing over money to a happy bloke in his back room never to see it again, or actually buying a car at a good price. Has anyone else bought a car through this site or had a good or bad expeience of it? The price quoted is very keen, and the website is very convincing...

Is it true that if I pay the deposit by credit card I have some kind of consumer 'protection'? Read more

Med' Cruise,

Missus MD has booked a Med' cruise departing Southamptom 19.10.06. my only concern is the average 24 hr temp that I have researched via the net, that being circa 62 degress F. I think that is too low. Should I be concerned??

Very Best regards.....M.D. Read more

As you can still find the odd pre-war Bakelite item knocking around car boot sales, my bet is that mine and your uPVC windows and doors will be around for considerably longer than that...:-)

One tip re the locks and various moving parts on doors and windows is to spray them regularly with EasyGrease or Slick50 (in aerosol form) - both are "dry" lubricants and ensure smooth operation and protection of such parts. Also good for car locks and hinges as clothes are not marked if caught on the mechanisms.

My late father was an engineer who specialised in plastic products manufacture for nearly 50 years and told me many interesting facts about the huge variety of types and uses to which plastics could be put.

Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDI - it's got a huge boot or you can have the estate - even more huge.

You could also have a look at the Primera, Avensis, or (dare I suggest it) a Mondeo.

I'm suggesting hatchbacks in case you need to fold the seats down and get a lawnmower in there.

what might (or should) the government do about it?

We all know that old cars tend to produce more noxious emissions than newer cars.

But, as has been pointed out at various points in the Back Room, most recently by the Lawman (in the Future of Luxury Cars thread) that (and I quote) "You can make a good argument that . . . much of a car's "carbon footprint" is created during manufacture" - and hence it could be argued that it is greener to keep an old banger going, even though it belches smoke, than to crush it and make a new one.

So - is it really more friendly to the planet to run an old banger and keep it going?

And if so, is anything doing anything about it?

I ask partly because I understand that some nations (Japan and Singapore are the places I have in mind) have regulations that strongly discourage the driving of older cars, on the grounds (I think) that these old cars are environmentally unfriendly. Read more

I simply felt it was more polite to do it that way. I apologise if my knowledge is not as profound as yours.

Hi,

I've just bought a 1996 R reg Renault Megane 1.4 RN Paris. The brakes are making a really loud scraping noise and when I apply the brakes the pedal goes almost to the floor with no braking then the brakes seem to slam on fully. As a result, it feels really difficult to brake in a controlled manner. I had a mechanic (a friend of the guy who sold me the car) have a look and he said the brake pads looked new but there was rust on the brakes. He said he had cleaned them and for a day the scraping noise was gone but then returned. Do you have any idea what this problem is? Read more

if the pads/shoes are all ok sounds like master cylinder problem if pedal goes to the floor, you may have a leak on the master cylinder to the servo seal at the front, still take the car in for a free check before you have an ACCIDENT!!!.

I have arranged for a test drive, on Wednesday, in a Mitsubishi Colt. I am very disappointed that my request for a 'proper' test drive was refused, so we will be limited to a max round trip of about 6 miles, on roads which will give us no opportunity of driving legally at 70 mph. The staff have, apparently, no discretion on this matter. Read more

So, it is now off our list of possible choices.

After our visit to look at the Colt we stopped at the Kia garage. Never looked any further as my wife loved the Rio for the space, equipment levels and the price. They also had a 4 month old car with 2,500 miles at a good discount on the forecourt. We ended up with more car for our money, and she still loves it a month on. I would suggest you take a look at the Rio (provided you have a dealer nearby).

...Big Bad Dave.

And I think it's my duty to tell you that he parked over two spaces ON PURPOSE!

And his car was filthy.

And it passed it's MOT. It's a Peugeot too! Who would have thought it.

I thought you should know.
