February 2006
My wife has just called and described a warning light which is flashing in the Landcruiser.
It sounds like the 4WD light, but it is flashing rather than just on and is apparantly red. I thought the 4WD light was orange.
Has anybody got a Landcruiser manual to hand or knows what this light is ?
She's in the middle of nowhere and somewhat annoyed, so quick would be good.
Thanks,
Mark.

Hi all,
I was wondering exactly how the traffic light cameras work that we see on the roads. The other day, I was driving in an area completely unfamilier to me and being given directions by a friend of mine who failed to mention turn-offs until the last minute. Regardless, I had to turn right, but did not notice a traffic light on my left. There were three sets ahead that I did notice, that had turned to red, so I slowed to a stop as quickly and safely as possible (this was at night, and I was the only driver on the road at the time). I could just see the traffic light to my left but could not see the white line road marking, or any road markings at all, on the road, so I had/have no idea if I was on the line or not and, if so, by how much. Somewhat confused I almost considered turning right, but stopped before I had moved forwards because the lights that were ahead of me (about four car lengths away or so) were still red.
I waited for all lights to turn green and turned, but I don't know if any of the lights had cameras on, my friend said the one on my left did not but the ones ahead did, being as it was dark I could not verify this. There was no flash, but I am worried about what constitutes as passing through a red light. I was not stopped in the middle of the road, just I don;t know how far over or near the line marker I was (my friend guessed maybe a car's length, but as I could still make out the light on my left a bit I can't be sure). I did consider reversing backwards but, again, there was no visable stop line to guide myself by, so I simply stopped and waited, not continuing on until the lights had changed to green.
I had once accidentally driven through a red light about two months ago and paid the price for it, from one side to the other in a continued drive without realising it, and that to me would constitute as running a red light, but I am unaware of exactly what is seen as running the light, as I stopped, though late because the light to my left was obscured and I assumed the ones ahead were for a different turn off.
Any help regarding this would be very grately appreciated because I'm worried, considering I already have points on my license.

My knowledge of box junction cameras is non-existant. We don't have to content with them around here fortunately!
hello there,
My mother is about to take delivery of a Renault grand scenic 2.0 petrol (136bhp) privégé. Is there a running in period for this car, or can she drive it as normal from new??

When she gets it, have a quick flick through the handbook. The manufacturers instructions should be quite clear. Anyway, they're pretty much all the same and very similar to whats been posted here.
Evening chaps,
I have an Audi A6 2.5 TDi - 1999/S reg with 126,000 with Audi FSH
When the car gets warm t starts to blow out blue smoke - as though it's burning oil !
There is no loss of power at all.
When I open the oil filler cap it releases lots of pressure.
I have taken out the dip stick (whilst the car is running) but there is no back pressure from the dip stick hole.
Does anyone have any ideas - or a decent Audi specialist within he Nort West ? Read more
Assumming all breather pipes anr clean then it appears you have excessive blow by the rings and are pushing diesel and fumes into the sump thus pressurising the system and either forcing excess vapour into the induction end ot blowing oil up past the oil control rings. 126k on this engine is no big deal so either something has let go or it has not been serviced or has but with cheap oil. Regards Peter
The new quote for the discovery arrived a few days ago. £281 fully comp with full NCD.
However, I only drove it around 4000 miles last year and expect to do a similar mileage in the next 12 months, so insuring it for 10,000 miles seems silly.
So I asked my insurers to run a quote with the reduced mileage. This represented a saving of £3! Yes £3!
OK, I know that £281 isn't a lot, but I was hoping to save much more by reducing the mileage.
I'm going to try a few of the 4x4 specialist brokers. Other than those, does anyone know who may be able to help?
Thanks

Realising that the missus was going to overrun her 4k pa policy with MoreThan, I rang up to request an increase to 6k pa, happy to pay any policy increase. When I found out there wasn't any (at all) I asked why not and was told "because 10k pa is the minimum risk". When I replied with "It isn't, because her policy is currently 4k pa" the response was "Ah, well, that's because in the mileage box you wrote 4k! If you had written 10k the premium would have been the same."
"OK then", I said. "Please increase it to 10k pa".
"Sure, no problem"
And 10k pa it has been ever since!
In the same conversation I also learned that in our HP postcode at least declaring that the car is garaged overnight makes absolutely no difference to the premium either!

Afternoon all,
I'll probably regret asking a question about Europe, but...
I'm planning on going down to Europe for two weeks in the summer, mainly France, but possibly Austria, Germany, Swizerland and Italy as well. I've just read on another thread that in Spain, it's law that you have a spare tyre. Is this true in any other countries? I've got an Accord, and don't have a spare tyre, just a stupid foam inflator thing, so could be a bit of a problem.
So, my question is - do I have a problem? (keep this to the car please, you're entitled to your more general opinions, but... ;-) )

Spare pair of spectacles for Germany as well
Reflective jackets are mandatory in France now - for every occupant. Found the law a few weeks ago but can't find the link now.
Over in Technical you can read about my MiL's Merc E320CDi, which is having problems.
It seems that because it has stood still for so long and done so little mileage (6,400 miles in 5.5 years), the injectors have got gunged up and need replacing.
I'm a little skeptical, as since purchase at Christmas time, the car has done a further 2,500 miles, many on the motorway. However, if this is the case, then here is an example of why not to buy a low mileage car.

The low mileage excuse does not make sense - gunge/blockages or other faults caused by a lack of use in the fueling system would have presented in the first few tankfulls since you bought it, not 2,500 miles. Diesels in particular (because of the nature of diesel) should be far less prone to a lack of use.
My father had a hobby grey Fergie, diesel. It usage was very irregular (because he spent at least six months at sea each year, and I was too young to drive it), so he when came home, he put the battery on charge, used it for an hour or two a few times, parked it, and then went off again for a few months. It's still going strong.
I was looking through ebay and found a car that ticked all my boxes. However I have only ever purchased a £20 item on ebay before so shelling out £3000 on a car is a bit different. Has anyone here ever bought a car on ebay and if so what are your experiences. In particular does anyone know about this ebay trader m-and-c-carscom? Would love to know if anyone has ever bought something from him or dealt with him? Read more
I don't see any problem, but it's essential, if it was me anyway, to have a look at/test drive the car and meet the seller before bidding. Which is why the two cars I have bought on Ebay (a Fiat Brava 105 JTD, 2 years ago and a Fiat Panda 750L last month) have been from local Ebay sellers.

pump is o.k. testing points to injectors not switching.
