Look's like i might need to drop the washer pump, can i get access with just the arch liner out, or do i need to drop the lower engine bay panel? Read more
Have replaced battery on this vehicle 2.5 yrs ago as origanally engine would turn over ok at first but if it did not start first time it would then sound like the battery is U/S so i replaced it. Have lived with this since i bought this car. Could it be knackerd starter, its the origanal item. hope this all makes sense.

Once had a similar problem. Eventually tracked it down to the strands within the main lead to the starter motor being almost completely corroded through, but inside the insulation so not visible from outside. Only discovered it by completely removing the lead!
Don't worry - not changing my car but I was just wondering. Lets say you had...5 grand. What car would you buy?
Must be:
Saloon or big hatchback (i.e. Mondeo/Vectra sized)
V6
For what it's worth, I don't have 5 grand in case that's what you're thinking. Just generally curious.

Sorry - I missed this.
Yes - the car must be a good car to drive. Don't care about comfort and the louder the better really without sticking a stupid exhaust on. Driveability is key.
If you're going to go to the trouble of having a V6, you want to hear it!
Hi all
In January, I struck a deal on a new car and was due to collect it on March 1st. The new car is now delayed for a month, which leaves me with a question. Car tax is due on March 1st on my trade in, which is not a problem as I will cash it in when I trade the car
It's also due a service around mid March in order to keep the 3 yr warranty running. What would you do? service it, or not bother? Read more
Thanks guys, I guess I'm just too honest (or too much of a mug!) I think I'll take your advice and keep the money in my bank account!
My zx td needs a new clutch - has been juderry for a long time - lasted about 40,000, and now getting notchy, so decided to change it.
My local mechanic gets supplies from Transco. They do a new clutch(not recon) at a good price, anyone heard of them / quality etc. Is it worth buying from them, presuming there will be one or two manufacturers, everyone else sticking their labels on them.

I looking at buying a 12 Warrantee on a car I an considering. what companies do you know of that offer this service. Thanks Peter Read more
wouldnt recommend any of them..they only cover actual breakages...and will wriggle out of anything likely to be "wear and tear"
i havnt ever been able to claim on any of the warrantees that were on any car i bought
the best i ever had was an audi "guarentee" which was fantastic..
but that was £500 a yr

I've set myself a budget of £1500 (anything way under will do) for a car that fits these requirements:
- Must be pretty reliable.
- Easy to repair (spares easy to source, etc.).
- Have strong running gear so can handle poor roads.
- Not be a proper off-roader (i.e no landrovers, landcruisers), but be a 'normal' car (though having 4wd would be fine).
- Mid to largish size.
- Preferably not a 'glamourous' badge.
- Uses easy to get and cheap sized tyres.
- Not too prone to rust.
Any suggestions?

I'd echo the Volvo suggestions, but stick to the older RWD designs.
A 740/940 with the 4 cylinder petrol engine is pretty much the definition of indestructable.
Plenty of choice, and you can be fairly sure it's been driven nicely and hasn't been mini-cabbing.
Hi,
I plan to change the brake fluid on my 1992 Renault Trafic, (campervan). Which "dot" brake fluid should I use on a commercial vehicle.
There are two bleed valves on the front brake callipers. Can I do one at a time or should I bleed both at the same time.
Cheers Read more
This post has been prompted by a letter in today's Telegraph. Forgive me if this subject has been brought up before - but in the light of the recent £40M+ robbery, it's topical again. As part of the ruse, a car fitted with blue flashing lights in the radiator grill was used by the bandits - dressed, I understand, as police officers.
In the light of this, is it wise to stop for an 'unmarked police car' and, as the letter writer asks, is it actually an offence not to stop for any vehicle not displaying police signs? Read more
Saw a black Bentley with outriders and a Mondeo full of heavies behind it, blues behind its grille, in heavy traffic near Olympia one evening, struggling hard to get out of town... next day the papers were full of Jacques Chirac being late for dinner at Windsor Castle, so that could easily be who it was. I blame the hosts under the circumstances.
Helping to change a wheel on a colleagues Picasso last week, I was mighty relieved that we managed without incident. In a wet carpark on a very slight slope, the L-shaped jack seemed very unstable - I wonder how safe these things are? All my previous cars have had scissor jacks, which seem a bit more stable and where possible I chock the car up with wooden blocks "just in case" Read more
Are bottle jacks any good ? Draper ones start at under a tenner, 2, 4 and 6 tonne lift, but with a minimum height of about 20 cm and a lift of only 12 cm (approx), may not get you very far off the ground.

They are known to blow the pipes off at the pump end too. Quite a simple fix using elecki&a/c doctor's access route.
