I must add that that's an amazing price, I'm thinking of buying another myself, wouldn't mind one with more amps to measure, £24.99.

Yes, I too would agree, excellent value for money. I certainly wouldn't like to build one myself for that price!
By the way, just in case anyone is interested, the current list price for an "Avometer" is £881.00 !!!!

|
£881.00 ? Is that the "original", big, heavy, built like an outdoor breeze block comfort station one?
|
Yes, that's the one!

Galaxy, thanks very much, couldn't find it on the website. I,ve got an old one in the garage, in its case with the leads and a spare 15v battery. I was using it the other day and wondering if it was still possible to get spare 15v batteries, I've never seen one.(until now). This meter still looks, and the range knobs "feel" like new.

Yes, you can still buy 15 volt Avo batteries. Rapid Electronics have had them remanufactured again, Ever Ready ceased to make them many years ago.

Avo also produced a plastic adaptor which made it possible to fit a round 15 volt Duracell battery, but they were a terrible fit and, in my own experience, would only stay in place with the assistance of some small cable ties.
Also available was a 15 volt inverter which obtained the 15 volts for the high ohms range from the same 1.5 volt battery used for the lower ohms ranges. I'm not sure this is still available today.

Last Xmas Maplin were doing 2 for a fiver (buy 1 get 1 free).
They often repeat it in their bargain buckets.

For anyone lucky enough to have an "original" Avometer, the best 15V battery substitute I have found is a stack of 5 lithium cells (3V per cell) taped into a stack and fitted between the clips with a spacer. These cells are very stable and last for ages with very little adjustment of the Ohms x 100 control.
One small caveat with the cheap digital meters is that they can give false readings in the presence of high levels of alternator ripple. Although in good agreement with my Fluke when off charge, a cheap Chinese meter over read fairly wildly (>5%) when the machine was running.

Yep I'm looking at an Avo 8 as I type. Just check batteries. AOK. Regards Peter
