The new quote for the discovery arrived a few days ago. £281 fully comp with full NCD.

However, I only drove it around 4000 miles last year and expect to do a similar mileage in the next 12 months, so insuring it for 10,000 miles seems silly.

So I asked my insurers to run a quote with the reduced mileage. This represented a saving of £3! Yes £3!

OK, I know that £281 isn't a lot, but I was hoping to save much more by reducing the mileage.

I'm going to try a few of the 4x4 specialist brokers. Other than those, does anyone know who may be able to help?

Thanks

You can certainly save a great deal of money by having a Classic Car Policy, the only downside is that, in order to qualify for one, you need to drive a classic car!

Limited mileage is the obvious special condition but they may also insist that you have access to a second car for day-to-day use.

It all depends, really, on what you happen to be driving and the age of it.

interesting what qualifies as a classic - we have a Dolomite Sprint (very part time hobby, and covered for less than £100 on limited mileage etc). Last week we bought a much cared for low mileage 1991 Pug 205GTi (not considered a "classic", it seems, because they are not "collector's item). It will cost as much to insure as my A3.

Have you tried www.footmanjames.co.uk
for online quote?

I used Footmanjames for a Yaris 1500 miles but they do have other mileage bands.
IIRC protected NCD only kicks in at 5 years.
Obviously no second car clause on this policy.

From previous experience 'more>than' offered a much bigger premium reduction on SWMBO's Omega V6 for limited miles (6K) tham most companies. YMMV of course..

no idea if this is possible but as insurance can be arrange instantly over the phone what would the cost of this idea be? insure it for a year at TPF&T, then on the days you want to drive it phone up in the morning/night before and add on fully comp for the day, week or whatever?

Have you tried Adrian Flux insurance - they deal with 4x4's on low milage (well they used to). When I had my RangeRover they gave me a very good quote - but that was a number of years ago!!

Footman James insurance worked out to £354.

Not yet tried Adrian Flux, though I do remember insuring a kit car via them some years ago.

I mat look at NFU as well

Thanks for all the tips so far

NFU will probably prove helpfull. i insure all my vehicls with them and like the fact that insurance and claims are handeled by a local branch who all speak english and understand customer service and the neeeds of a small semi rural business.

Have you tried

www.confused.com/

as everyone should before taking out or renewing premiums? I did, and got one premium almost halved when I presented the results to the renewing broker, who referred them to the insurance company, who matched the cheapest in the list without hesitation.

I have Ford Ka & my policy is up to 6000 miles a year because of my age & the fact i dont use it very much only at weekends really. I managed to save a few hundread mind!

Hugo,

Give Cornish Mutual a try. Serves me well on the van.

Also try accepting a larger than normal excess. This also works very well on other types of insurance in reducing, quite dramatically at times, those all important premiums.

Realising that the missus was going to overrun her 4k pa policy with MoreThan, I rang up to request an increase to 6k pa, happy to pay any policy increase. When I found out there wasn't any (at all) I asked why not and was told "because 10k pa is the minimum risk". When I replied with "It isn't, because her policy is currently 4k pa" the response was "Ah, well, that's because in the mileage box you wrote 4k! If you had written 10k the premium would have been the same."

"OK then", I said. "Please increase it to 10k pa".

"Sure, no problem"

And 10k pa it has been ever since!

In the same conversation I also learned that in our HP postcode at least declaring that the car is garaged overnight makes absolutely no difference to the premium either!
