I was looking through ebay and found a car that ticked all my boxes. However I have only ever purchased a £20 item on ebay before so shelling out £3000 on a car is a bit different. Has anyone here ever bought a car on ebay and if so what are your experiences. In particular does anyone know about this ebay trader m-and-c-carscom? Would love to know if anyone has ever bought something from him or dealt with him?
I wouldn't buy without viewing and an HPI check. Otherwise I wouldn't worry.
I've sold a few, so yes its safe!
I let anyone who buys from me check the car over and have a test drive (I insist on seeing their insurance documents, photo license and some other form of ID - e.g. passport).
I also don't haggle - i.e. they buy at the final bid price or not at all. I prefer cash - lots of scams with dud cheques these days.
A lot of 'conventional' traders now use Ebay because it offers a wide audience at a relatively low cost. Also potential buyers can contact you and arrange a 'private' sale if it suits both parties.

Can you post the item number? There's an M & C cars in Manchester.
What does their feedback say?

They appear to have good feedback - but always beware. See post

Yes their feedback is 100% and all related to them selling other people cars. Is this normal?
I have no connection with them but I think it's fair to say they have enough feedback history to judge on, they are very open about the way they expect to do business and are keen to put off jokers which is the sign of a pro and there are more than few pics of defects there.
looks v encouraging to me. Can you visit them before the sales ends?
Looks a cracking car to me, wonder what it will go for as still a day or so to go?
That looks about as rock-solid a feedback rating as you´ll find for a car specialist on eBay. Go for it.

They seem professional enough but you never know. They are 100 miles from my place so it may be difficult for me to visit them before hand. They offer a 3 month warranty with www.warrantyworks.co.uk/index.php?fromlink=home for an extra £100. Do you think this is worth taking if I can't visit them before hand?
Check out what the cost of a warranty you can buy yourself is. There's an ad to your left or try warrantywise. Great for fans of small print and get out clauses.

If its the Green/Diesel, then something isn't quite right :-(
In a couple of the photos you can see the Reg and according to DVLA this was registered in May 03.

im with nick ,im not an internet car buyer from unknown sources ,there must surely be something similar round the corner that you can kick the tyres on?its autotrader for me everytime.Ring, look ,HPI,deal, buy/walk

If you "win" it HPI it and check it matches the description when you collect it as you would any car. If it doesn't match the description then walk away, if it does then you should feel obliged to pay what you have bid for it.
Frankly you get a much better opportunity to view and test a car on ebay then you would at auction and probably won't pay much more (often less!). Obviously don't bid retail for it but sellers on ebay are not necessarily any better or worse than a dealer or autotrader advert.
Just follow the same rules you would for any car purchase. There are more sellers than buyers at the moment on ebay and there are some real bargains.
I will definitely give it a hpi test and will also try and verify the history on it. What price would constitute a bargain for a green 307 sw se hdi 2002 estate with 94000 miles?

Colliewobble yes it is the green diesel. Can you elaborate because I can't see the number plate in any of the photos. Could you send me the pics that shows the reg mark. I am not sure if this is dodgy or not but they seem to have used the same set of pics to describe a 2002 and 2003 car.
Reg of the car in the photos is AJ03 XEA. Not a '52' - you need to ask them about that....

well for some reason the bid has gone up by 1K tonight and is out of my budget so will keep walking. Its funny as I called them earlier and they reckon £3500 would probably win the bid.

They have a disclaimer on the photos that 'these are library pictures'
So it is not the car for sale...........
Raises more questions!

Well spotted, that's a more than a bit suspect. Put your mouse over the library pics notice to get the full message.
I must sat that would have me wallking away.
To be honest if it's in good condition then 3500 sounds too cheap. More like 4500-5000 would be a typical selling price.
I can't see the point of not putting the actual car photographed. There are plenty of upfront private and trade sellers on ebay so if you've got any concerns about this seller wait for another.
So how does this guy get all these lovely reviews. Has he paid 200 ebay users to give him these?
Its a really wierd thing to do. Putting up loads of pictures (including zoom) of a different car! At the end of the day if the winnng bidder turns up and decides he doesn't want to pay then there is not much the seller can do. He's wasted his time and money. There is no point in not being totally straight with your Ebay listing. I list and photo every single blemish and minor fault - I don't want my time wasting..
I don't see any problem, but it's essential, if it was me anyway, to have a look at/test drive the car and meet the seller before bidding. Which is why the two cars I have bought on Ebay (a Fiat Brava 105 JTD, 2 years ago and a Fiat Panda 750L last month) have been from local Ebay sellers.
