I went on the existing toll road for the first time over Christmas as an alternative to the A38, A446 route to the M42. Cost of £3.50 seemed a lot for the distance I covered and the time saved as a result, although if I'd driven as fast as some of the loonies on there I wold have saved a load more time! Is this road the unofficial testing ground for powerful 4x4s? I was left standing by a Porsche Cayenne and an X5! Read more
After being a conscientious objector (and I can claim the cost back on expenses) since it opened, I?ve lapsed and used it several times in the last few months. I?d say that on most of the trips I?ve seen someone stopped by an unmarked Police car, usually a Volvo S60.
The last time I used it, just before Christmas, I drove the whole length South with cruise set at what seemed a reasonable speed and never I moved out of lane 1. A 3 Series BMW went past (in lane 3 the whole time I saw it) at a speed which took my breath away ? given that traffic often travels at 100MPH I reckon it was certainly doing 130MPH and possibly a lot more. Nothing dangerous about that, but you really draw attention to yourself, which does carry the danger of losing your licence.
Any suggestions for a means of carrying bicycles on my car? I have a Toyota Avensis hatchback and want to transport 2 adult and one child's bikes. I have seen racks on the backs of cars but aren't these usually mounted on a tow bar? My car does not have a tow bar and I would prefer not to have one. Is it possible to buy a rack for the back of a hatchback? I am a bit concerned that a rooftop rack would be very noisy. Does anyone have any views on the best way to transport. At the moment we can put the child's bike in the boot but as he gets bigger so will his bike so we need a solution for 3 bikes.
Any ideas? Thanks

I use the roof bar/cycle carrier option.
At ?10 per carrier it´s pretty cost effective.
I´ve never noticed any extra noise.
For some reason I take the saddles off to slightly reduce the wind resistance - not sure why, but it´s a habit now.
This summer will see a roof box and 2 bikes on the roof of the poor old Astra... more room for wine on the way back!!!
Hi,
I have a Renault Clio 51 reg and the external temp gauge is showing 39 degrees I wish.
where is the sensor situated so I can give it a clean.
Is it easy to rectify?
Thanks in advance Read more
It is the little black blob under the mirror. Try warming it up or cooling it down to see if the temperature changes, but usually the sensor is kaput.

Anyone know a decent place I can get two bicycles serviced in/near Guildford?
Used to use Acorn Cycles but they seem to have disappeared unless someone knows different.

Bobby,
Acorn Cycles was a similar outfit. Just some bloke operating out of an old shop. He would take a rusting heap been in your shed for 10 years and for 20 quid make it good as new, but alas he is nowhere to be found now.
Will give the guy in Burpham a go.
Reading through a few posts, why is it that the middle pedal in a car is often referred to as the "break" pedal and the thing that picks up a radio signal an "ariel"?
And those trips up to the airport in Essex? It's STANSTED, not Stanstead!
Anyone else spotted a regular spelling mistake oft repeated here?

Enough sillyness for today me thinks. Friday is still 3 days away you know.
DD.
To cut a long story short, I have received a parking ticket through the post today. However, my car has never been ticketed. The location is Elephant Road which I multimapped to a side-road near Elephant and Castle, London.
The letter said the car was illegally parking on 23-Dec-2005. However, the letter said I have 14 days to pay from 30-Dec-2005. I was out of the country on 23-Dec-2005 and left it with my girlfriend. She never mentioned to me that it has been ticketed and I have no reason to not believe her. I have upto 14 days from 30-Dec-2005 to pay the reduced fine of £50. Thereafter it will rise to £100.
My question is:
1) How should I deal with this? What procedures and time-frame should I follow?
2) If the car have not been ticketed, why would I received a letter now?
2) If the illegal parking was on 23-Dec-2005, surely I have upto 14 days from 23-Dec-2005 to pay the fine (which that day have been passed), is this correct? Why would they start counting the 14-day grace period from 30-Dec-2005?
4) I have read about parking attendants' dishonest behaviour in the past and saw it on BBC documentary not long ago about parking in London. Could I be a victim in this circumstances?

Don't they take a digi-photo at the time of ticketing now
- they do in Manchester. Perhaps they can send you that,
but this will prove no more than the unique ref. no
off the tax disc.
>>
I think I would only trust the unique ref no. off the VED disc after reading this about the Manchester warden who faked the date on a digital photo to back up a wrongly issued ticket.

Sadly in this day and age the camera can lie only too often as digital images can be changed so easily.
My son is studying Graphic Design at college at the moment and what he can do with a couple of images, a PC and the right software in about 10 minutes is quite amazing. He recently produced a magazine page showing his friend doing some trick jumps through some woods on a moutain bike, his friend has never owned a bike and can't ride one and the bike had never been within 2000 miles of the background terrain and at no time did any image leave his PC until it was printed! Never trust a digital image of anything!
As seen on the rear parcel shelf.
No not the Churchill ones, I mean real live ones.
It is a common sight in my area. No common variety noted except for the drivers.
I got extra points the other day for spotting an elderly car with a broken rear light unit showing a white light plus
both front seat belts not in use plus.
two shelf dogs - both were West Highland type mutts.
Are such nodding dogs all over the country or is it a southern thing? Read more
Psychotic Springer nods (funnily enough) just before pouncing. Saw a Churchill thing yesterday otherwise not seen a pukka one in years.

thanks very much for the information
