A current TV advertiser claims to check 96% of all UK car insurance companies as a'one-stop' shop on the internet to find the cheapest quote based upon the data supplied on-line. I tried the service and one of the companies they contacted was More Than. I did my own check with More Than and I was quoted £122 less than the cheapest quote they could find!

Whilst there is no cost to use this service (they get their 'cut' when you take out the policy) it would have in fact cost me £122 by not doing my own check.

Insurance companies - like all businesses go through different phases. If they are new or want to increase their % of the market they will tend to be cheaper.

If they want to increase their profitability they might up their premiums by 10% (say) if they lose 5% of their customers they are better off as at the end of the day Profit is king not market share.

Also

Within the same Ins Company there are different areas of business - Direct, Brokers, Affiliates(Tesco, Asda etc)

For Example Norwich Union Direct might quote better or poorer rates than Norwich Union via a broker.

A few years back my eldest son bought a Prelude and NU Direct(his then Ins Co) would not cover him as he was under 30 - low and behold the cheapest premium was under £500 from NU via a local broker.

Watch out for Compulsory Excess

It is Ins renewal time for me next month so I will fill in the forms on-line and see how the land lies.

Quoted a lower premiums on-line last time but the excess on some policies were as high as £500 - the average claim on a Policy is under £1000 so you would be meeting over 50% of the claim if you were to blame - hardly comprehensive cover.

Thinking about buy a sat nav unit but one thing about Sat Nav I'm not sure about is, if I was on the motorway, for example, stuck in traffic (motorway closed) and decide I want to find an alternative route, without live traffic information, how easy/quickly can the sat nav find an alternative route?

Thanks in advance. Read more

Being a SnartNav user to date, I'm quite interested in how it compares. WIll update when I've had a good play...

Rather well pound for pound as compared to BMW's kit in a 5 series. I've had to hand ot over to SWMBO'd now.

Would a warranty company (any but because I've heard of Warranty Direct we'll say them) cover say....the dash pod on an Audi TT if it were to fail?

Roger,

We did ring and ask and were told they didn't know what specifically was covered and that we needed to check the fine print of the documentation.

21 year old in his car with his mates. Spots a Scamera van on bridge over road. Is doing 20mph (in a 40mph zone) and he takes both hands off the wheel, leans towards the windscreen and gives the van 2 "V" signs.

Of course this is captured on camera, is handed over to police and they prosecute him for dangerous driving as had both hands off the wheel.

Is banned for a year, fined £90 and ordered to resit his test.

Now my gut feeling is that the punishment doesn't fit the crime. But then I feel that if he is stupid enough to do what he did, in front of his mates, what else would he be doing as well?

I wonder if I'm the only person that has ever wished he never gave his car key to his 14 month old daughter to play with. Of course, I never saw it again. VW would like me to invest 170 pounds in their company to provide a replacement (it's a remote transponder type fob for a 2002 Touran). The fact that I can't wait to get rid of the Touran has nothing to do with the fact that I object strongly to parting with an amount of money that equates to approximately 45 bottles of lager (I live in Sweden, keys aren't the only expensive thing here). Can anyone suggest an alternative source for these keys? Please don't recommend Auto Electronic Systems Ltd in London because they have already quoted me 155 incl vat. I'm looking to save far more than 15 pounds here. Read more

Just search on ebay.co.uk for 'remote flip keys' or 'vw key. Just got a new one for my golf for £19.50, had the key section cut at a local place, and it programmed by alarmremotes.co.uk (although VW could do this fairly cheaply i would imagine)

It's soon time for my 81 yo MiL to give up driving.

She has a one owner 98S 1.4 Polo L auto, 5 dr, with less than 20k. Mix of VW and independant SH, good for year etc.

Do we

a) have the hassle of a private sale via Autotrader (we live 30 mins away, and she won't want to be involved)

b) put it into a local car auction, eg Witney

c) put it on eBay

d) tout it round the local independant car dealers

Parkers suggest a 98S with 70k is worth £1695 in good cond. in a private sale - can't see that the mileage improves the value much, if at all. Most its journeys over the last two years have been 500yds (return, not each way) to the hairdressers once a week... Read more

Why not try ebay with whatever reserve you feel happy with. If you get a nibble at least you can then arrange collection and money etc at your mutual convenience along with any queries from prospective buyers. If it doesnt sell then no harm done.

I have previously posted an item about a problem with an '02 reg Scenic dci with air con. Recently it suffered a thrown auxilliary alt/pwr steering/air-con drive belt. Another belt was fitted and tested with belt alignment checked out okay. However last week it has done exactly the same. The tensioner is doing its job, but we did notice that when new belt was fitted and tensioned, the belt oscillated between the air-con compressor and pulley - even when the belt has the correct 'give' and is tight between the other pulleys. (Belt was supplied by Renault).

The belt oscillation was up and down but not laterally as I would expect from a misaligned belt. An aircon engineer who checked out the compressor pulley/endfloat etc seemed to think the car has an incorrect alternator even though owner has owned car from new and has never had previous alternator repairs.
Car is a few years old, has full history yet has done over 100,000 miles.
Has anyone in the forum experienced similar problems with the Scenic and/or other Renault models?

This is commonly seen on these and is usually down to a failed one-way overrun clutch in the alternator's drive pulley.

Hi,

I have a deposit down for a Mondeo 2.0 TDCI Ghia with added electric sunroof and hands free phone attached. Buying from a Ford dealership who check the car and just serviced it. Registered April 2004 and has 38k on the clock. Looking to pay £9,200 for it, do you think this is fair value?, car has Full Ford Service History and is in excellent condition.

Equivalent spec new for latest model would be £20,050.

Do you any of you know how many miles you can get away with in a modern diesel engine nowadays before trouble sets in assuming the car is regularly service by ford.

Thoughts appreciated.

I'd look out for the X. I've got the Ghia (estate) and ended up mildly disappointed there weren't many more extras on top of zetec. I wish I paid the extra £1500 for top spec, in retrospect (I purchased new from trade sales 3 years ago). Great car, though, fine engine and everything else I would have wanted from a car excepting this one regret.
