Sat Nav Question - BMDUBYA
Thinking about buy a sat nav unit but one thing about Sat Nav I'm not sure about is, if I was on the motorway, for example, stuck in traffic (motorway closed) and decide I want to find an alternative route, without live traffic information, how easy/quickly can the sat nav find an alternative route?

Thanks in advance.

On mine, I'd have to put the destination on again discounting motorways.

You can block roads mid navigation but I'm not sure how this would word on motorways.

In either case, a couple of seconds tops.

Depends on the system, I'd imagine. Mine will tell me to turn around and get back on the motorway for a while, because it still thinks it's the quickest way. After a while it'll realise that I have no intention to do that and plots a new route.

The actual calculation process takes seconds though.

If you get a TomTom 100, you can pay a small monthly fee whereby the unit connects to the internet through your bluetooth phone and downloads free traffic updates, automatically routing you around jams. Works quite well, apparently, though I don't use the feature.

Have a TomTom 100 though, and Navigator 5 for the Pocket PC, and both are worth the money. (Although Navigator 5 stings if you've just coughed up 250 quid on the PPC! However, I bought my copy fairly cheap on ebay with a GPS receiver.)

on a tom tom you have a diversion button - press that and you can choose how far in front the blockage is and it will divert round it

of course if your next exit is 10 miles away and its blocked before that sat nav cant help you.

Rather well pound for pound as compared to BMW's kit in a 5 series. I've had to hand ot over to SWMBO'd now.
