Friday 18th. A45 dual carriageway heading from the M40 towards Northampton.

8 miles out from Towcester (tracked all this on my GPS) lorry pulls out to do the ridiculous slow pass we are all familiar with. However in this instance the lorry on the inside lane is faster than the overtaking lorry heading downhill but slower heading uphill. So outside lorry slowly pulls ahead and then inside lorry claws the ground back and then outside lorry inched ahead and so on. You get the picture.

They ended up being a rolling road block for 8 miles until the flat section heading down into Towcester where outside lorry manages to just get ahead of inside lorry and pull in just before the roundabout. So having held up traffic for 8 miles he ends up at a standstill at the roundabour literally 2 feet ahead of the vehicle he overtook.

Cars then stream past in the short section of road before the next roundabout hurling abuse and in one instance a can (missed) at the driver of the overtaking lorry. Its driver has wound down window to hurl abuse back and make hand gestures.

IMHO opinion this lorry driver is a selfish person whose parents never married and given his complete disregard for other road users a potentially very dangerous individual indeed.

Both lorries UK registered by the way and the overtaking lorry was plain white. Had it had marking I would have noted them and called the company concerned.

An interesting interlude, which is now diving into silly ratholes. I'm locking it, although I shall leave it here since I think it makes interesting reading, certainly seeing both sides.

The cooling fan on my wife's 1.6 Focus (1.6 Zetec, 2001 Auto) starts up within about 5 seconds of switching the engine on - I have noticed this even on the coldest days. The aircon is not switched on nor does the car have a heated windscreen (as per a recent post on this subject). Is this a thermostat problem or the temp sensor ... or something else?

Many thanks, Y. Read more

Hmmm. According to Ford, only the faclifted ones did this. These also have the demist and whatever on the dials in orange showing you which selects the aircon.

However, I'm wrong (it happens all the time) so I apologise for the duff advice.

I see they advertise on here - does that imply some sort of endorsement?

Anyone on here used them - any thoughts? Read more

There has been quite a bit of coverage in the media about the Yes demise.

Re WatchDog. The editorial staff will be regarding it as due to, at least in part, to its original on-air piece, hence the item.

I have a Philips widescreen TV that's slightly over three years old. In the past few months it's developed a strange fault. When first switched on, it works perfectly, but after it's been on for an hour or two it stops responding to the controls. When this happens, I can continue watching as long as I don't need to change channels, switch between set-top box, VCR or DVD player, or operate the volume control.

Powering off and back on doesn't solve the problem although it did the first time I noticed the fault. Now, I have to allow a period of rest before I can use the controls again. I haven't experimented enough to determine how long this takes but I suspect it's long enough to allow the set to cool down. It makes no difference whether I'm trying to use the remote control or the controls on the set, although I can still power it on and off using the switch on the front.

It occurred to me that it may be something connected to the set that's causing the problem, so I've tried disconnecting everything and operating the set with just an aerial plugged in.

I'm currently working round the problem by using a newly-acquired Freeview box which has its own volume and channel controls.

I suppose the only sensible answer is to call in a repairer, but can anyone think why the set should be behaving in this way? Read more

Certainly, in this respect, it appears not to be a good idea to use Paypal (which I invariably do).

If you opt to pay by cheque, then you have to be supplied with the name & address to complete the transaction.

Dear all,

I have a 3 year old Renault Clio 1.4i dynamique+ (new shape) which has just decided to play a practical joke on me in that it has broken down 15 days out of warranty. Renault garage say that one of the four coils in my engine was at fault and that all four had to be consequently replaced at a total cost of £200.00.

Although I say joke, I was lucky in that Renault replaced the part for free which I find admirable, what is a coil and what function does it play in the engine? Is it normal for a car of only 3 years old to have this and will this cause any further cost in my part in future. The car has only done 16,000 miles on the clock.

Please kindly advise me.

Thanks

Paul

Kudos to Renault, especially for paying for all 4. I seem to recall VW group would only replace them 1 at a time, even under w'tee.

'The world's first purpose-built hydrogen-powered bike could be fitted with an artificial "vroom" because of worries its silence might be dangerous.
A prototype of the motorbike, which could cost more than $8,300 (£4,500), was unveiled in London on Tuesday.

The problem with the "fuel cell" bike, which produces no polluting emissions, is that it is too quiet.

But anti-noise campaigners said they welcomed the prospect of a motorbike without the usual excruciating roar.

For their part, manufacturers said the fake engine noise device, which could be switched off, would help alert road users. '

I'd go for a reproduction of my old Triumph T90 quite an exciting noise on it's siamesd exhaust.

After changing the engine oil I performed the usual checks and noticed that the coolant level had dropped by 1.5 inches below the COLD level on the coolant reservoir. I topped it up to the correct level and two days later it has fallen again by about 1 inch.
Please, has anyone got any ideas as to why this might happened?

Many thanks

My astra 1.7 dti was loosing coolant and I couldn't see where it was going. In 3 days and less than 150 miles I had to top it up with 7 Litres and I still could not find a leak.

The car went back to the garage where eventually they discovered that the head had a tiny crack in it. The head was replaced and all is now well (appart from Kangaroo Juice! [see my thread])

Is your engine an Isuzu 16 valve or a vauxhall engine (the isuzu engine has the code Y17DT) as I believe the Isuzu is more prone to this failing and yes mine is an Isuzu engined version! As for cost I'm sorry I can't say as the repair to my engine was carried out under warranty but I have a feeling a recon head is about £400 (expensive because of the 16 Valves so I'm told)

Hi, any Fiat Punto owners out there?

I've just tried fitting a stereo (cassette) from a Punto to my Punto. I got the security code with it but the unit doesn't prompt me for it as the instructions say it should.

I tried refitting the original unit (cd player) but now get exactly the same with that.

I also have a cd changer, hence the switch to cassette unit. The cassette unit is compatible with the changer.

Anyone come across this problem before? Any ideas?

hi all

is t cutting a dull area of a metallic car a good idea or not.
I have read somewhere that it does allot of damage to paintwork.
I have a car which appears dull on one side.
I have read arguments for and against it....any one got any experince of using this or any other products to bring the paint back to life?

Not mine and not metallic, but a 'before' and 'after' of cutting compound, polish and wax on a 15 year old car.

Hi,

I am a new poster on this forum and I thought that you could help me with a small question

I have a Volvo S80 and my main dealer is quoting £65 per hour + vat to work on it, does that seem normal to you guys or a little high?

Also do you know any good independants in either Leicester or B'ham that could work on my car, if so a rough hourly rate?

Cheers

Sorry, I forgot to add: a routine standard service at HLM is about £180 all in compared to £250+ at my local Volvo dealer.
