Everytime I travel up (or down) the A417 my SatNav seems to think I have suddenly driven across a field to drive on a parallel minor road. It always happens at the same place, north of Cirencester where there is a viaduct. I'm convinced the road mapping is incorrect.
Anyone else driven this stretch and had the same effect? Read more
2 incredibly annoying problems have just turned up separately on my 2002 Golf.......
The first one started this morning when I opened the front door to see the car with the brake lights all lit up! Tried the fuses but no difference and then gently pulled the brake pedal (its not loose) and magically the lights went out.... is this a WD40 fix or a sign of something else?
The other problem has stopped for today but comes and goes and that is that at times it will tell me that the boot is open (which it's not....) I can be driving along (when this fault is present) and it will occasionally just keep beeping telling me the boot is open and then next minute say its shut and then beep again..... Soon the beeping of the car is matched by my beeping!
Any ideas? For such small things Im loathed to go to a garage and pay out bundles! Read more
Well read all helpful comments - brakes are ok at mo so left them be but popped out with a torch to sniff for windscreen wash fluid - nothing obvious though.... then tried to clean as spray has only been going about 3/4 way up screen since winter freeze.....
Gave it a good spray to run water through it, shut boot, locked up and then back indoors..... everything fine content maybe it had sorted itself.....
Then Woo-Hoo-Woo-Hoo-Woo-Hoo..... alarm going/lights flashing/neighbours grumpy.....
So I think that's tied that one down!! Thanks for help!
Hi I'm a long time reader, first time poster...
I have a 1996 dt glx 406 and the haynes manual claims that there is an alarm switch on the centre console to switch it on or off. The thing is there is no switch!
Does anyone have any idea where this switch is?
Any help would be great.
Thanks for reading.

Yeah its got a keypad immoboliser and I guess the flashing light makes it at least look like an alarm. I'm not too bothered, just would have rathered an alarm. Cheers for the help bill.
Ricky.
Hi all,
About 2 weeks ago my (fairly) reliable Corsa started to display the fault lamp on the dash. The code reads 28 which is 'Fuel pump relay contact problem.' I went to the dealer and picked up a new relay, and replaced the old one. The fault light went away, but I experienced slightly jerky deceleration and cruising around 2k/rpm. New spark plugs, oil change, injector cleaner, the car improves, until this evening and the fault code 28 returns. Does anyone have any idea of what to look at next? Also, how does the ECU know if there is a problem with the contacts in the relay?
Thanks... Damien.

Thanks... I checked each fuse in turn and they all appear to be in good condition, none of them had blown. There does not appear to be any corrosion around the relay socket, however I did note that it was located in a slightly different position to that indicated in the Haynes manual.
The fault light appears to light up intermittently, rather than being on constantly, it only comes on when a lower gear is selected and used for braking or accelerating. After this the light remains on.
My 1998 Omega Elite 3 litre has developed an interesting problem.
The engine runs perfectly, then cuts out as if the ignition has been switched off. No warning lights, and it won't restart until it has been standing for five minutes. It then starts as normal and runs perfectly for arond ten minutes, then it cuts again. Wait five minutes and all is ok for another ten minutes or so.
It's driving me nuts. Anyone got any ideas?
Nick

Crank Sensor as someone already said. Not a particularly easy job on these but they are as common as muck....
Please could somebody confirm if it is still a legal requirement to have a G.B. sticker when travelling within the E.E.C.?? Thanks. Read more
Stop kicking off or North Wales Police will issue an ASBO on. Totally motoring related by the way. See press for details !
For a 2001 1.4 vvti model (last of old shape) does anyone have a diagram of what has to be removed to check the box level? Also what top up oil should be used?
Also I cannot see an adjuster for the alternator drive belt. How is the belt tensioned please?
Thanks. Read more
Thank you Aprila for your feedback. I have found the tensioner pulley and it is the fact that it has a plastic snap on cover over the star adjusting bolt. That is why I could not see it.
One further question? How do I actually tension the belt? Do I have to just keep tightning up the pulley bolt or should I put some tension in the belt first?
Once again thanks.
I recently bought a second hand key fob for my 1998 VW Golf, after being quoted £130 for a new one from my local dealership.
Does anyone know how to reprogramme the key? Read more
You can programme the remote control part of the key yourself
but you will need 2 working keys to do it .One
key in steering lock ignition on;second key in door lock ,hold
in lock position & press one of the remote buttons on
fob.
Its the key he wants to programme though.
Well thanks for the couple of posts last week regards V5 docs at auction - there were quite a few cars with no V5 surprisingly
Anyhow, went to Blackbushe and bought an Alfa 156 1.8TS - 00X 77k miles - £2600!! absolutely chuffed to bits.
Full Service History. Electric everything, remote locking and climate. Cambelt done at 69k miles. Only due a minor service now. 1 previous owner - lease company. MOT till August 2005.
Superb to drive with a real growl at 4000rpm. Really comfy, nice handling, goes well and hasnt drunk the all the fuel i've put in.
The only downside is that its white!! Now not everyones cup of tea but its really growing on me. My first car 10 years ago was white and i really dont mind it. Just other peoples views. Perhaps thats why its £1100 under trade price! Anyway its not too bad at all a colour and overall i am chuffed to bits.
Gave it a polish and a good vac and its superb and in great nick.
Everything works, the only problems so far that have needed rectifying:
Blown number plate bulb: £0.80p
New Wipers - £18
New Valve for one tyre - £5
and, er, thats it!....
So far so good. Just waiting to see if the cynics are right. I'll keep you updated.

A strange thing happened to me on Thursday. I nearly reversed over a Lotus Elise.
To spare the details - I was sitting in on-steet parking. I reversed back slightly and bumped something. First thoughts were I had knocked over a small child or dog, as I didn't see anything in the rear view mirror.
When I got out of the car I discoverd I had bumped into a Lotus Elise which was parked close behind me, my rear window being reasonbly high, I just could not see it.
A stunningly attractive brunette female stepped out of the car for a look while I explained how I had came to hit her car. Neither of us could see any damage to either car thankfully. She told me her dad had commented that he almost did the same thing to her car. That made me feel slightly less foolish.
I was shocked by two things - firstly her attitude - very amicable, and reasonable. She actually apologied for "parking me in". Secondly just how completely invisbile those cars are when they are parked behind you. If your parking sensor beeps and you cant see the obstruction - stick your head out the window and check it may just be an Elise!!!

I have found even the latest maps to be years out of date, I would never waste money on genuine ones to find they are just like the one I already have. I get the next version as soon as it comes out, yet junctions built a few years ago are still not on. This is with both Navteq and Teleatlas, overall, I found Bavteq better so stick to them.
