Hello all,

I have a pug 205 1.9 GTI. My problem is as follows;
The throttle seems to be either on or off, by this I mean it is very difficult to drive the car smoothly; if I try and apply a small amount of throttle the car will jump foward. If I try and hold the car at a steady speed (at low speed and low rpm) the car seems to jump along like a rabbit!!Therefore I find I have to ride the clutch far too much. I know the 205 is known for being a bit lumpy when ticking over but this is problem I have is not normal. Its as if the throttle has no sensitivity...it feels like its on or off!

The wiring under the bonnet is a bit of a mess...due to some monkey installing a reconditioned engine and gearbox. A mechanic looked uinder the bonnet and said my crank sensor wire was not connected! surely the car wouldnt run without the crank sensor connected??

Any help and ideas are much appreciated,

thanks

Jon

First things to check are the rubber breather hoses &pipes for splits & security, especially the main ribbed intake pipe from the airflow meter to inlet manifold. Also the air intake butterfly housing needs to be clean & the black 3-pin throttle switch needs to be set up correctly sothat the engine control unit can "see" a closed throttle idle situation.Check connections to the airflow meter, pull back rubber boot & make sure terminals are good.If the engine /gearbox has been out ,then check main wiring earth leads on top of g/box.The crank sensor on these is only used to set up ignition timing & is not used for engine running.

I've just watched 'A Street, A Track, An Open Road' on DVD. Even my wife (non biker) was hooked - its not the usual safer biking lectures. Sort of mini big brother style on bikes.

Produced by the Motorcycle Industry Association and presented by Suzi Perry. With Chris Walker & Jamie Toseland amongst others. DVD only £3 delivered from www.stordvd.com/

In contrast Volvo did a lot more with what was basically
the same vehicle from the Dutch plant.

I'll admit the S40 was slightly better but it wasn't exactly fantastic by any means!

Did anyone watch Heartbeat this evening? I don't know what year it was supposed to be, but they had a "new" Zephyr Six fast response car. In the programme there was a G registration car which would have dated the programme as being set in 1969 or 70. I think the G suffix was 1969 as I had a new G reg Triumph 1300TC.

Anyway, wasn't the Zephyr Six with the big rear wings introduced in the late fifties? I also seem to recall that the chequered hat band for the police was introduced around 1967/68, and it has still to make an appearance in this series.

I know, sad aren't I?

To get back to the original thread, the G reg was a mk1 Escort.
The plods were driving a C reg Anglia!
I too thought this was strange.
Some of the music played on the programme is also fron the seventies too - though I can't think of any examples.

When we were young we did it because
(a) It enabled us poseurs to recognise another of our ilk approaching. (b) We liked to openly display our defiance of authority. (c) It looked cool. (d) Nobody told us that they were fog lamps ~ we thought that they were fashion accessories.

As we've got older we continue to do it because (e) We can't find the on/off switch. (f) Now that we suffer from cataracts we think that it is permanently foggy. (g) We're trying to recapture our youth.

I'm sure that we have other reasons as well, but a failing memory makes them difficult to remember. So we just do it regardless.

My 7 year old son, who is totally and utterly obsessed with MINIs, has asked me the following.

With the headlights in the bonnet, if you open the bonnet do they still work ie do they point to the sky?

Its obviously important to him to find out, don't shoot the messenger!

Any takers? Read more

Does anyone out there have any ideas why my 1994 granada wobbles / judders when i steer to the left at high speeds. It seems anything over ~50mph does it. Turning right is fine, however steering left feels as though something is going to break and i'll end up in the hard-shoulder. The car does pull to the left ( always has done). I've jacked it up; all bushes seems okay and there's no play in any of the wheels etc. Oh and it seems to fly through MOT's. 'Mechanics'have looked at it and some reckon wheel allignment but i'd rather be sure before paying for allignment only to have it redone after the real suspension fault is found. I know i seem like I'm a real skin-flint don't i? Read more

As has been suggested, check the tyres first.
As for compliance bushes, they are just rubber bushes with built in 'play'. Something like a solid rubber bush with holes in it to allow controlled movement of the related component. The idea was / is to alter various suspension and steering angles to suit the prevailing conditions. Under cruising conditions the bush will be neutral, under braking or acceleration the bush will deform enough to alter the relevant angles, thus improving roadholding.
Some 70 - 80's Fords had them fitted on the rear axle and they were forever wearing out. A well known 'mod' in those days was to fit a solid, non compliant bush, nobody noticed the difference in roadholding, and the solid bushes wore out just as quickly anyway.
