Did anyone watch Heartbeat this evening? I don't know what year it was supposed to be, but they had a "new" Zephyr Six fast response car. In the programme there was a G registration car which would have dated the programme as being set in 1969 or 70. I think the G suffix was 1969 as I had a new G reg Triumph 1300TC.
Anyway, wasn't the Zephyr Six with the big rear wings introduced in the late fifties? I also seem to recall that the chequered hat band for the police was introduced around 1967/68, and it has still to make an appearance in this series.
I know, sad aren't I?

Zephyr: as used in the original "Z Cars" from the 1960s BBC series, pathfinder TV cops prog - and almost totally produced in a studio, far from the East Lancs Road. Great car, bench seat and not so nice column gearchange, if I recall correctly.
|
|
The Zephyr tonight had an old registration - sans suffix. That would place it as prior to 1962.

Ah, with you now, thought you meant the Zephyr was a G plate. Not seen much of the prog but recalled it as set late fifties early sixties so a G suffix on anything looks like a slip up.
Lots of fun to be had looking for anachronisms and continuity slip ups.
|
talking of Continuity slip-ups (I'm in pedantic mode), anyone see the Salisbury-bound coach in Timothy Spall's marvellous "Mr Harvey Lights a Candle" play on BBC 1 last night? It was passing Stonehenge on A303, but camera was behind Stones, therefore looking south. Trouble was, the coach was travelling in wrong direction: right to left - towards the east!
OK, I'll try and get out more.
|
The coach was also showing a different reg number on front to the one on the rear - now I AM sad!!!

Winged Zephyr/Zodiac range, made famous as Z Victor 1/2 in Z Cars, dates back to early 60's I think. But by '68 surely it would have been superceded by the boxier version that gave over to the Consul/Granada in 1971?
|
The Zephyr on tonight's prog had a 3 letter / 3 number reg which would be classed as dateless these days, and worth a few quid.
It certainly wasn't a G suffix.

...and while we're on the subject, the Zephyr looked quite smart until they drove it through a rutted lane and clunked it into a bridge wall - who lends out classics to be treated like that!?

I didn't say it was a G suffix.

Apologies, that's what I get for scan reading posts.
I think the Alfa Romeo was the G suffix?

No, the Alpha didn't have a suffix either. I can't remember the car with the G reg - I think it was a Mini
|
The blue getaway Mini was a D suffix - nice condition also.

I didn't notice the cars, but the birds are very fit this series.>

G started September 1968. I only know that as my triumph is a G reg :-)

One of the Zephyr's featured in Z Cars was only the front half of the car, with rolling scenery passing the windows. Few of the actors could actually drive so most of the car shots were in the studio with the back half of the car removed to allow easier filming.
|
Speaking of classic cars on TV shows, I caught an episode of Alias recently, the spy series with Jennifer Garner. They visit about half a dozen countries in each episode, which all look the same, as they are all filmed on the same soundstage probably.
Anyway for some reason or other she visited the UK for about three minutes, and in the course of this, despite it being set in the present day, came across a British policeman --- driving an H-reg (i.e. 1970) Ford Zephyr!
|
I was posted to Traffic in 1962 at which time we were using the Zephyr Mk 2.
About 1964 time we got the Z car, Zephyr Mk 3 with the droop snoot and back wings.
About 2 years layer then the Zephyr Mk 4 with the billiard table bonnet and bopxed off rear.
Doubt if this helps much......

Zephyr: great name for a car - wonder if Ford will ever reintroduce it? Maybe it hasn't got enough 'international' flavour in today's global market.
How many other glorious model names from history are there that could be revived? Vauxhall could make a Victor for grumpy old men; Ford a Popular for any politicians who resign on matter of principle; Wolsey (as was) a Hornet for political spin doctors ......
|
"Wolsey (as was)"
Don't they make cardigans?
Now there's a name for an old mans car.
|
remember Pensioners' Corner ... respect required.
hey, wasn't it spelt Wolsley?
|
Remember it? I'm firmly in it!

I would say it does, in the 90's kawasaki imported a motorcycle for the US market called the Zephyr. They got an ear warming from Ford though and the name was quickly dropped the next year.
|
|
When Ford introduced the Granada the TV company of the same name were a bit miffed and tried to force them to drop it, but without success.

Yes. My dad had a Wolseley 1500 - XKH 492 - can still remember the number as a young teenager. Lovely car with walnut dash and door cappings. Leather upholstery and car radio. There was a Riley variant but I can't remember the model name.
|
|
Riley one point five, I think. You could tell the difference at night because the Wolsley badge on the front lit up.
|
|
You could tell the difference without looking too - those Wolseley grills used to whistle.

To get back to the original thread, the G reg was a mk1 Escort.
The plods were driving a C reg Anglia!
I too thought this was strange.
Some of the music played on the programme is also fron the seventies too - though I can't think of any examples.
