Just had engine repaired after headgasket went. Went to local honest joe backstreet garage. Seemed ok for few weeks then today engine makes a knocking noise during idle when accelerate noise goes. When idling car sounds like old diesel taxi. Is it serious??? Prob take it back when they're open just is it ok to drive???? Read more

yeah car is citroen xsara 1.4i s reg {Duly added to subject header. DD}. Engine was misfiring garage said headgasket gone and ignition coil pack needed. Sent cylinders away to be checked and skimmed. Sound was tapping rather than knocking. Drove it today and tapping sound gone prob because weather hotter today. Sound only audible at idle and below 30 above 30 sound goes. seems ok now.

Might not be such a bad sign. Is the sort of person who buys a Vanquish generally the same sort of person who regularly picks up bargains on eBay? ;)

So, what is going on at main dealers? Profit margins so low on new cars that they are hoping to rake in money from the P/X's they have taken in?

Was out looking at cars today (got an itchy wallet) and I noticed that a number of the main dealers had quite a few other makers cars on the forecourt for sale. For instance, the VW Dealer on Colchester Road, Harold Wood had Rovers, Citroens and MG Sports cars for sale. The Fiat dealer on the Romford Road was also selling other makes.

Is the buying public wising up to new car prices so much that we have made the difference? Read more

Yeah, but in all fairness, what dealer would want a 5 year old non-franchised trade-in sitting on their forecourt? That's getting just a little too old to be selling to anyone other than a trader.

We used to sell other makes of used car from our Ford showroom, but not many, most just went straight to trade, the ones that we did sell were normally newish and desireable for one reason or another, or quite simply we knew we could sell them at a healthy profit.

The last one that I sold was a 206 which we could afford to sell at a price that made our secondhand Fiestas look poorly equipped and overpriced, yet we still made a reasonable enough profit on it. Of course having driven the thing I would never buy one, my feet didn't fit on the pedals, but that wouldn't bother the girl who bought it!

im getting closer to finding the perfect car.
ok here goes
its got to be an auto.
needs to get over 40mpg on motorway at 70mph
big and safe and strong (did bonnie tyler do a song like that ???)
alcantera seats.
very very comfy driving position.
decent handling, sometimes i like to throw it round the bends.
got to carry sum stuff, like toolbox and spares, so a saloon is not a problem. got roof rails for other big stuff.(which isnt often)
around £14-15K
like red dials, not green on night journeys.
gota have cruise
the only car i see like that is a bmw525d auto avus sport.
any one know of anything different?
dont like fords/vauxhalls/passat/jagstype/
do like audi a4/a6, some of these dont have cruise tho as standard ;-(
volvo v70,

Hi ,my 1995 VW Golf Driver 1.8 is smoking from its engine after driving it for half an hour or so. I have taken it to a VW garage ,and they couldnt find anything wrong with it ,but after driving it away,it did it again. The smoke is grey/white,and seems to be coming right from the engine itself. The temperature guage reads normal, but the coolant temp/level warning light comes on even though the coolant tank is full.I have checked for water in the oil,and it looks ok,also no mayonnaise anywhere.Any ideas would be greatly appreciated ,thanks - I'm totally stuck!

I have a car that has been off the road for a year (SORN reg etc). I will soon want to put it back on the road. However, I want to make sure it will pass it's MOT first before going to the expense of taxing and insuring it. My question is...is there any way I can legally drive my car to the nearest test centre (approx quarter of a mile) while it's not taxed or insured (I don't have access to a trailer or transporter).
Thanks Read more

OK I take your point, but you have forgotten one thing from my post.

The magistrate/judge whatever they are called made his decision on the basis of the perceived honesty of an insurance broker vs a Police Officer.

Surely, if this is how our peers work I cannot be blamed for adopting a similar approach. Hence my view.

Big Bad Dave

A combination that would normally invoke visions from Ronin, Bullit, French Connection or even Dukes of Hazard - The Movie but tonight I settled down in front of The Graduate on VH1 with nothing but half a litre of vodka, a can of coke and a ton of work to prepare for a meeting tomorrow. It made me realise what a fantastic driving movie this actually was. Everyone knows how cool this movie made the Alfa Romeo Spider but, can anyone, without reference to the DVD, remember how far Benjamin had to run to the church after running out of gas? I?ll give the answer tomorrow if a) I remember the answer or b) I remember posting the question.

Cheers, Dave. Read more

Does anyone remember a 60s/70s film starring Michael Crawford where he and a passenger are driving down a road in a 911 targa and they decide to swap places without stopping?

I think it was called Hello-Goodbye.
