Sarah Davies

What's the best scratch remover?

The corner bumpers on my car are scratched and the paintwork arpund the bumpers has lost it's glossy shine.

What do you recommend I do?

can you use farecla on black metallic? I was reading about it, and is the top wax good? Also, if the pain is not that badly oxidised/faded, is it better to use g10?

Recently I've been shopping for a used Mondeo. I'm very picky when it comes to spec, so with a budget of £6k have been solely looking for 2001/2 2.0 Ghia models. One dealer I came across though is selling a number of identical August'03 Vectra 1.8 Clubs with 15-17k miles on the clock for the apparently bargain price of £7k, though they all have some minor bodywork damage.

I've always preferred Fords over Vauxhall (for no real logical reason) but these seem such a good deal I'm seriously tempted, but something is holding me back.

Here's the pros & cons as I see it over the 01'Mondeo 2.0 Ghia I want:-

Pros
17 months warranty remaining
Considerably younger, lower mileage car
Lower insurance costs (group 7 vs 10)
Better fuel economy?

Cons
Lack of grunt from 1.8?
Not as much fun through the corners
Fewer toys to play with (though it does have cruise over the M)
1st service not yet been performed so due imminently

Help I can't decide what to do!

Haven't come across any new-shape Vectra 2.2's within my (so-called) budget of £7k...and to be honest I do prefer Fords over Vauxhalls. I was tempted by these Vectra 1.8's simply because they seemed like such a bargain.

Any help greatfully appreciated.

I've no idea what my Mondeo tyre pressures should be so i always bung 30psi in them regardless of weight carried etc.

Never had any adverse wear to them or noticable difference in ride so just how critical do tyre pressures need to be?

Seems that 30psi is the ballpark figure so who and why works out that for example some should be 29 or 31?

I can't think of a good reason for not sticking to the tyre pressures recommended by the car manufacturer and usually found on a sticker on the inside of the fuel filler cap flap. Depart from them and you're asking for trouble sooner or later.

What do most BackRoomers do?

I find it a pain to view threaded as you have to click on each message to read it - I'd rather just scroll down one flat thread, with all the new messages at the end - I always try to reply to the last message (but sometimes another message gets in before mine!).

But others reply to older messages and it seems much harder work to figure out what you haven't read and to jump about between threads. Read more

I just scroll down the page looking for the red 'new'.

Times London.

Fabulous piccy of Bernie Ecclestone pointing at his brand new £300k MB CLS AMG V8 Kompressor. Its on axle stands outside his home cos someone has pinched all four wheels.

Each wheel/tyre will cost £5k to replace.

Question of the day, just how hard did RF laff over his OJ and coffee? Read more

>>Must be an election soon..>>

A somewhat cynical observation. Bernie is as entitled to the protection/involvement of the law (little as it is it seems) as anyone else.

He himself, however, pointed out that informing the local police would probably prove as useful as taking a Baxi to the Sahara....

I got stuck in jam on the A550 - took over an hour to do a 20 minute maximum journey (and that 20 mins is on a bad day). Caravan, after caravan, after caravan, complete nightmare - all I wanted was to buy some new material for my bedroom curtains and got stuck behind one of those stuck in the 60's tin boxes. Yes, I hate caravans!!!!!

Well I bought the Rover 414i. Think i've got a good one. fsh, new rad, cam belt done 15,000 ago, everything works etc.No signs of head gasket problems. Fingers crossed it will last awhile...

Anyway, theres some fine scratches on the passenger side (like its brushed a bush).

Whats the best scratch remover on the market to take these out?
(Blue matalic paint if this helps)

Regards,

Dave

Right folks the current thread on the mitsubishi Carisma has got me thinking - which cars are misnamed so badly that you could sue the manufacturer under the trades descriptions act?

Mitsubishi Carisma - more like charisma bypass!
Suzuki Swift - the GTi was nippy but it was hardly swift.
Mitsubishi Shogun Sport - Sport? your having a laugh!
Skoda Superb? more like the Skoda Not bad

There must be a load more that i'm sure you can think of.

Every so often, when used on the manual single-wipe option, the park function of my Focus wipers fails. The wipers just stop wherever they happen to be when I let go of the switch lever.

Is this (a) a common fault (b) one which my local (small) Ford dealership would be likely to easily diagnose or (c) a fault that could spread to all wiper options? At the moment, when I'm in a forgiving mood, it is merely an annoyance.

L'escargot

It's something that has only just started to happen. It occurs only on flick-wipe, and operating the switch again merely puts the wipers into a different position. The wipers stop moving as soon as I release the switch ~ they do not complete the cycle. It never happened before or on my previous Focus which I had for 5 years so I can't imagine that my technique is at fault.

When it's convenient I'll see my local Ford dealer. Being intermittent, Sods Law says that I won't be able to demonstrate the fault. I just hope they listen to what I'm telling them!
