Now is it me being cynical, or a blatant money making exercise, the fact that this is the first year I haven't received my tax reminder for the car ? Nothing to do with automatic fines by any chance ? :o(

Is it just my MOT, V5 and insurance certificate I need for one isn't it? I can never remember ! Read more

I enter the dates of significance in Outlook calender. My PC reminds me of all significant events in advance now. I'd rather not have little stickers in my windscreen :-) mind you my MOT station DOES put the reminders in.

Morning all.

Well I bought the Rover 414i. Think i've got a good one. fsh, new rad, cam belt done 15,000 ago, everything works etc.No signs of head gasket problems. Fingers crossed it will last awhile...

Anyway, theres some fine scratches on the passenger side (like its brushed a bush).

Whats the best scratch remover on the market to take these out?
(Blue matalic paint if this helps)

I can switch all the courtesy lights on manually in my 2002 model Passat. They do not come on automatically with the switch set to the door position.
The under door and luggage compartment lights do function normally.
Any ideas? Will check fuses but can not believe that is the problem.

Can I throw myself upon the wisdom of the backroom?

I need to replace my ageing and thirsty Seat Toledo GT, as I now have a daily commute of 60 miles. I reckon a 50mpg diesel will save me at least £60 a month, possibly more.

My budget is £6000.

I need something that is big enough to take fishing tackle (and my pub darts team...), so I am thinking of something focus sized. I need aircon, but other toys would be a bonus too. I am not too fussed about "handling" and would like something comfy.

I have tested a 2000 mazda 323 diesel, and was unimpressed with the refinement of the engine, very noisy. The interior was pretty dull too. I am not anxious to pay a premium for an Audi or a VW, but would consider another Seat, either a leon or a Toledo. I am a big fan of japanese reliability, but am unsure about their diesels. I have thought about an Almera 2.2 diesel.

If I go for a Focus, should I hold out for the TDCI? (HJ describes the previous diesel as ancient).

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Thanks David, I'd spotted that as well!

I looked yesterday at a 2001 51 reg TDCI (which I think has to be the 130PD version)

It had 60k on the clock and was up for £5995.

An identical car is also advertised locally, albeit with 50k on the clock and for £5,500.

Seems like a lot of car for the money when compared to a Focus.

Am I the only person who thinks that BMW have well and truly cocked up their 5 series. It looks ugly with an usightly rear end, a whacky and stubby side profile with a cheap looking front end. The i Drive is confusing to say the least and my wife would have run a mile rather than try and use it...perhaps thats a good thing though... Mercedes must be rubbing their hands with glee (I just brought the E320 over the BMW5)as I just couldnt grow to love the 5 the way I do the beautifull lines of the new MB. A committed BMW driver all my life but MB now have me hooked...what a drive
Anyone think of other cars that have been over engineered or stylised??

Does anyone own an Origin B2 solo the Gatso GPS detector? Any views on its efficency? I have an existing Origin Blue i which I am going to upgrade to the B2

AS,

I've got no idea what savings are available by buying through "non approved" retailers as I haven't looked. At this stage I was just comparing the specs of different brands of detector through looking at the manufacturer sites of each. It was whilst I was looking at the Origin site I came accross this info.

What I was suggesting was that it surely is a bit naughty of Origin to suggest that no support service is available to people who did not buy through an approved retailer.

After all, an Origin B2 is an Origin B2 wherever the hell you bought it from isn't it - and they must all have been sourced from Origin at some point.

The only point I can see of insisting that you buy through an approved retailer is so that the company can (along with others in the market) keep the prices of these things artificially high. And the point I was trying to make is that, surely that is illegal.

A slightly cock-eyed analogy it may be, but isn't this point similar to the restrictive practises that the EU have just cracked down on, whereby car manufacturers did not honour a warranty unless services were carried out at inflated rates at franchised main dealers.

Question Which Rover 75?
mscott

Don't laugh, but I've decided to buy a (used) Rover 75 and would like advice about which engine to get. The 1.8 would suit me and there's lots of them about, but obviously I'm wary about the head gasket problem. In HJ's CBCB he says that the coolant level dropping is the first sign of a problem, but does this mean that the gasket has already gone, or does it mean it will go if the coolant level isn't topped up? Also, I have read that if the car has a special green coloured gasket fitted then it'll be okay. Any help gratefully received, or I'll have to buy the diesel. Read more

I should have also pointed you in the direction of the car by car breakdown, which you can access from the menu on the upper left hand side of this page.

I don't (if they had six cylinders, it would likely be another story given that aural attributes are important to me with this type of car), but HJ likes the diesels.

I'm getting a marked loss of power in my W reg Bora 110tdi (not PD). I had a timing belt (50k) a little while ago, but I think it's unrelated as I was already experiencing this. On the flat the car seems ok, and it's really only when the car's under pressure under hard acceleration especially going up steepish hills. The car's fine until about 2500rpm, at which point the power just seems to die. It's as though someone's turned off the fuel supply. The fuel economy is unaffected. A 400 mile trip along the south coast last week still returned well over 50 mpg and I don't generally hang about. The turbo whine still sounds the same. Any thoughts anyone? Turbo hose? Fuel filter? (I use Jet or Tesco fuel)

By the way, if you haven't yet tried toothpaste to clean windscreens and wipers - do so now. Read more

Thanks for all your replies to this. New MAF sensor now in place. I think I must've been living with a worsening situation for some time, since the effect is quite dramatic.
