Question Camry 1998
Avantra

Posting a question by my father:
He bought a Toyota Camry 1998 with 75000 miles under its belt+history. The service records don't say specificaly if a cam belt was changed. His questions are as follow:
1.Toyota in Barnstaple insist that they only change the belt and there is no need for tensioners or pulley to be changed as part of the service is this correct? isn't it will be better to do this at the same time?
2.Is £185 for the job and parts is reasonable? Is it an easy car to work on by the local garage and not by Toyota? they ask only £120 for the lot. Read more

The only advantage with going to Toyota is they may offer a guarentee (Ford do a 60K on Mk 2 Mondeos), and if the belt snaps Toyota may offer some compensation. I would change the pulleys just for satisfaction.
I have considered one of these cars for some time, and would be interested in your experience, and the costs of ownership.

It seems that Tesco are joint partners in a £10 million venture to process Biodiesel from rapeseed in a new plant at Immingham on Humberside to open late 2006.

Hopefully this may help to bring the price down and be less dependent on the Middle East.

>>Currently for every 80-something pence we pay for a litre of fuel, some 60 pence goes to the treasury?>>

Actually the figure is higher - a minimum of 80 per cent of the cost of petrol is made up of tax and VAT.

I have just bought a car which is 20 months old. It only has 7000 on the clock and is in excellent condition to look at.Problem is I did not look at the service record until 2 days later whereupon I saw that there is no year 1 service stamp. I phoned the garage where the car was originally registered and they have no trace of a service on their computor or on the manufacturers computer. I took the car back to the (non main dealer)cardealer and they say they will change the oil and filter. Problem is of course its next service is due in a couple of months and it is still missing a service stamp. What is the point of changing the oil when the service is due anyway? I would normally have the service at a main dealer at least until it is out of warranty. Does it really matter at the dealer says he will cover the warrenty for me?
Needless to say I am an older female , usually well able to stand up for myself but in this situation I seem to have completely lost my way and do not know what to do.Any helpful, constructive comments?

Good move, but I suspect the garage may refer you to the warranty dept of that manufacturer. These are the guys that pay the warranty repair bills that come in from dealers.

If they don't refer you to the warranty dept, you should ask to speak to them, otherwise you risk getting the service receptionist's view on the situation and not the real truth.

Did anybody else in the East Midlands see the item on last night's news about a hearse being given a parking ticket?

Okay the vehicle wasn't occupied but how could they do it.....?

Another bit of reporting reliant on emotional sensationalism rather than the
*whole* truth.

Indeed. I particularly liked the quote 'We are not blatantly parking illegally all day long, it's only as and when is necessary.'

As it's a couple of days to pay day I'm feeling a bit skint so I'm off out to rob a bank. When I'm caught and the case goes to trial, I'll base my defence on the fact that I don't rob banks all the time, only when I feel it's really necessary.

Silly analogy I know, but I don't see why the undertaker thinks he has a case at all.

I would have had some sympathy if a funeral had been in progress, or the hearse had been collecting a body. Or does saying that undermine my argument?

I'm amazed to hear a case of parking regulations being enforced in Leicestershire. Leicester city centre is awash with parking attendants, but they're only there to make sure drivers have paid and displayed. They don't bother with (and for all I know have no jurisdiction over) double yellow lines or obstructing pavements.

'cos I spent mine buying a car...
'R'plate Passat went to dealer for suspension arm recall last week. Yes, two bottom arms covered by recall needed replacing, and were, for free. Other 4 that needed replacing cost £500. (ouch). On reviewing mpg over last 6 months, discovered an average of 27. Unfortunately that ruled out first car we saw which was 'T' plate Jag S class 3 litre.
2nd was a range of ex fleet Passat Tdi's in Doncaster. I hadn't realised how much they had "down specced" the interiors on all but the sport: We test drove a light metallic blue with a champagne velour interior. I wonder why that one hadn't sold? Nice engine, though.
On to a Mondeo Tdci. Super engine, but SWMBO who uses the car daily (I only get it for long journies) didn't like it. Shame: the price was good: 2002 registered, 90000 on the clock, and £5,600 with £1500 part ex for the passat (1.8 20vSE with 127k on the clock, and needing an M.O.T. from Friday...) Promise of cheap money, too: half at 0%, half at 5%.
Finally (Monday) to Mexborough, and we bought a 2001 Y Audi A6 tdi 115. up on miles (116k) but lovely grey metallic with black cloth interior: like sitting in an expensive business suit. Drives beautifully, and the mpg looks promising. Now looking for an excuse to pop out to Harrods for a pint of milk!

If you have just rebuilt the SUs, then they should react in the same way. It is important to make sure that plugs/points/timing etc. is spot on before the carbs are set. I used to make sure that the dashpots were topped up before I started. I think the mixture nut was screwed up until the jet touched the piston and then unscrewed 9 "flats" to give a start point for the mixture. One carb was set at a time, with the joining piece between them loose. I used to listen to the hiss with a rubber tube in the inlet of each in turn to balance them. I used to use a colortune to get the mixture right, a bit time consuming, but worth it. The last job was to tighten the joining piece and ensure that both butterflies open together.

Hi all,

When I pulled off the M-way after a 2 hr drive on Monday I noticed the car, Ford Fiesta XR2i 1.6 H Reg, had lost a lot of power and was reluctent to drive.

I got it home safely, back to London, but when I took the rocker cover off today I found the rocker arm, on the top left nearest the cam belt, No1 I think, had completely sheared off and cracked away from around the mounting and nut and was just lying sideways in the top of the head.

Would anybody know what may have caused this and would it be ok to just replace this damaged rocker arm or is it best to replace full set? And do you think the valve concerned may be damaged? Any advise much appreciated.

If that is the CVH it could be tappet failure.or rather. In the old days tappets that were tapping. Due to cost at the time.were put in a vice and compressed to small extent.Making them slightly oval. This was all very well. But did tend to lock after so many miles and wrecked the head. Not saying yours is the case but a possible??

In one of the little villages on the road between Abergavenny and Chepstow, there used to be 'home made' 30 signs just after the 40 signs as you entered the village. Obviously put up by concerned locals who wanted the limit lowered (I think it has been now).

Whats the deal with these? They were as good an imitation as you could make with a piece of hardboard and a red magic marker. Surely there must be some rules against displaying signage designed to mimicks official signage? Read more

Oh..I know back to the old chestnut...but bear me out...

Take two cars, both say three years old.

Car 1. Driven about 30,000miles pa, of which say 25,000miles are on long trips with plenty of motorway and A road driving. Regularly serviced, probably two or three times pa.

Car 2. Driven say 3,000miles pa with almost no fast driving at all, and mainly driven in urban traffic for a maximum of four miles betweem engine on and engine off. Serviced annually.

Now the question is this...In order to maintain optimum performance of the engine and ignoring all other factors, which car would benefit more from Optimax or equivalent fuels. Is it necessary for Car 1 and vital for Car 2?

Driving along minding my own business, right speed, right lane, aware of other road users etc etc. Travel round a roundabout keeping in my lane and overtaken by hooting and gesticulating car and driver plus wife and 2 kids in the back.

The wife points the naughty finger up at me and the husband has the look of satan on him whislt mouthing something that sounds like thumping bump?

I stil dont know what I did nor does my wife and kids who were sitting in the car with me. The car drives off at speed still with driver gesticulating like a mad man with the 2 kids in the back looking frightened. My kids ask "Dad, whats wrong with that man?" and It gets me thinking. I am seeing more and more of ths type of behaviour from perfectly normal looking people who turn into demons the momment something upsets them.

Question 1: To answer my daughters question..Whats wrong with that man or anyopne else who behaves like that.
Question 2: What happened to self control and tollerance of other drivers
Question 3: Is the answer to 1 & 2 the congested roads and world we live in have caused this problem

I worry for my children as they start to learn to drive that they will face more and more of this sort of aggression
