Does anyone know if it is possible to reset the standard fit alarm on a 2001 Vectra without a diagnostics tool? I have removed the main car battery to recharge it after another problem but now the dash LED is indicating a fault after replacing the battery

Any help appreciated

I tried disconnecting and reconnecting the battery but this hasn't helped. I tried a few times with various attempts at locking and unlocking to see if that helped.

All switches are OK - so back to main dealer I reckon!

Taxed the car today. Got the reminder three weeks ago and decided to put six months on at £90.75 (or £90.50, can't remember). When I went to the post office I was informed the fee for six months was now £93.50, raised in the budget for cars in the high tax bracket.

That one was slipped through without any comment, did anyone else know? Read more

The rise in car tax is to finance the building of more road humps...only jesting. A survey of motorists found that a great percentage of us are not enjoying our driving due to humps and cameras etc. I for one can included in this group.

Stopped on the HS with wheels turned in or out ?

May seem like an obvious one, however today spotted a police car 10 yards behind an unfortunate soul with it wheels turned out - ie if pushed from behind would end up in lane 1.

in the US...you should keep your bum firmly rooted
in the car until told otherwise. Hands on the steering wheel
is a good idea also.

Well thats the way thinking is going in this country too - especially if you are stopped on a 'fast road' where the driver exiting a vehicle might cause danger to themselves and other road users. Thats part of the reason why there is this 'new way' of parking the Police vehicle behind the stopped vehicle, to give those exiting/approaching the driver's side better protection and more visibility to the other road users in teh hope that they wont plough into the stationary vehicles.

At the end of the day, it's trying to keep everyone safe.

I've always wondered about speedo digits on older cars being not in alignment and those that say this is a sure way of telling that a cars been clocked.

Are speedo's foolproof in this respect? ie digits not in line, even by a small amount = clocked???

I know about the shiny wheel and worn pedals bit. Just wondering about the speedo. Read more

I just wanted to say a big 'thank you' to everyone who has commented on these bulbs - your feedback and thoughts were very useful as I recently bought a set for my PUG 205 GTi and upgraded the lights on my 330.

In both cars the light emitted is much better (brighter), whiter and gives a clearer vision of whats on the road. I was concerend that the benefit might not be as great as others had found (as I got the impression that any benefit was very much car dependant) on their own vehicles.

I bought mine off eBay and I cannot be happier with the Osrams now that they are fitted in both vehicles. the difference these bulbs have made is dramatic.

So, many thanks for sharing your views and experiences folks :)

BTW if anyone decides to change the bulbs on their 330, be warned that the air filter box is situated very close to nearside headlamp unit. This leaves you with very little space in which to manouver the fitment free and repalce the bulbns- but it can be done. You will either need to remove the headlight unit completely, unbolt the air box or get someone with small thin hands to fit the bulbs ;) Being lazy I persevered and managed to fit the bulbs in the nearside unit after a few minutes of struggling - you have been warned! :) Read more

I bought:

1 x Pair H4 (for my PUG 205)
2 x Pair H7 (for SWMBOs 330)

The whole lot off eBay (from the same seller) for £35 all in. Lights have made a marked improvement in both vehicles and I am very happy with them. Credit to fellow Backroomers for their advice in previous posts.

I see Halfords have a 150 pcs socket set priced at £99 from £149. I searched previous posts and they all seem postive with regards to the quality but I wasn't planning on spending this much, more like £50. Is it worth the extra cash to get tooled up? Read more

My son's Citroen ZX has a nice big puddle of water in the rear passenger's footwell. I haven't got a clue how it got there; the door and window seem ok, the sunroof and headlining dont have any tell tale signs of water leakage at all. Very strange. Also, how on earth do you get that Rainex stuff off the windscreen? I know some people swear by it but I dont like it at all. The wipers chatter and you seem to be looking through an opaque bit of glass most of the time! I've tried the toothpaste trick but it doesn't work. Read more

You say the car has a sun roof, if it is the tilt and slide factory fitted type, then the water in the rear footwell may be coming from a dislodged sunroof drain tube. Water will get past the glass and the roof.
Hope this helps.

It's either on the VIN plate, which is the alumimium plate riveted to the bonnet slam panel, BUT more than likely it's written on a sticker that's just below the drivers door catch on the B post.

Question Camry 1998
Avantra

Posting a question by my father:
He bought a Toyota Camry 1998 with 75000 miles under its belt+history. The service records don't say specificaly if a cam belt was changed. His questions are as follow:
1.Toyota in Barnstaple insist that they only change the belt and there is no need for tensioners or pulley to be changed as part of the service is this correct? isn't it will be better to do this at the same time?
2.Is £185 for the job and parts is reasonable? Is it an easy car to work on by the local garage and not by Toyota? they ask only £120 for the lot. Read more

The only advantage with going to Toyota is they may offer a guarentee (Ford do a 60K on Mk 2 Mondeos), and if the belt snaps Toyota may offer some compensation. I would change the pulleys just for satisfaction.
I have considered one of these cars for some time, and would be interested in your experience, and the costs of ownership.
