I see Halfords have a 150 pcs socket set priced at £99 from £149. I searched previous posts and they all seem postive with regards to the quality but I wasn't planning on spending this much, more like £50. Is it worth the extra cash to get tooled up?

Depends if you will be able to use them. I just have a set of spanners and a good set of screwdrivers and can get much of what I need doing, done. Also, do you have the space for the 'extra' tools? I see that halfords are doing some great deals on tool storage ;)
|
Plenty of space for tools in the garage (if not for my car!). Have recently bought decent tool box and I am trying to do more servicing of my wife's car now that it is getting on a bit. I figure that if I can save only two hours labour time the socket set will have paid for itself...

Think of it not as £45 this month, but spread over the next 30 years or so. Get your wallet out.
Not as good as SnapOn etc, but not so the average or advance DIYer will notice. Probably a Chinese import, but many of the premier names are now

I got some of the ratchet spanners in a sale last year. Very happy with them.
Don't forget - lifetime guarantee with them as well.

If you can get access to a Costco card, they sell this 148 piece set..

I have one, and it was about £45. Absolute bargain if you ask me.

They're decent enough. I have noticed though that my Halfords sockets (AF) have a greater tendency to round-off rusted bolts/nuts than my Draper sockets (metric). Admittedly though I'm not quite comparing like-for-like.
You'll always get a better deal buying some sort of kit/set than buying pieces individually. That's the way business works! £100 for a 150 piece set sounds like an excellent deal.

Got my wallet out and bought the Halfords set. Initial impression is very good, just hope my mechanical skills are up to the job now! Thanks for your replies.

How can anyone justify the price of snap on tools?
Some of the prices i have seen are just mind boggling!
Does anyone here actually have any? very few if any i bet!

I have accumalated a great number of snap-on tools over the years in my job.Yes they are more expensive but they are certainly are worth the extra and as they have a lifetime guaratee against breakage i think it is worth it.

I once had an "inexpensive" socket set. Then one day a socket simply exploded on me undoing a stuborn bolt. Never again.
I've got several Halfords Pro items and have been very happy with them.
As pointed out above, think of the cost spread over all those jobs you'll use them for over the next 30 years. The saving in labour will make the investment look tiny.

i must admit i've got a Halfords pro set - had it for around 7 years( or longer) and i'm waiting for it to break so i can get a replacement (lifetime warrantee !!). They are good, very good. Well worth the money

i may be wrong but i think the halfords pro range are(were?) manufactured by facom so should be a good bet

Like many people my tool kit has been built up over a lifetime, bought as and when needed. There are many items of varying quality, top spot going to a Draper socket set bought from my mum's catalogue over thirty years ago and still giving excellent service.
I sometimes look at these tool kits in Halfords though, and have been very tempted to splash out. Everything I would need and all in one box as opposed to scattered all over the garage. What stopped me was knowing I would be duplicating a lot of what I already have, but some of that isn't the best quality. I vaugely have a Halfords pro set on my wish list, I'll have to see what the taxman wants this year then maybe...

Up until two or three years ago Halfords did indeed stock the Facom range of tools, mostly to order though.
As far as i am aware, the pro range of tools are of Kamasa origin, they do look rather similar if not identical.

Actually you hadn't. If you click on "view threaded" above, then you'll see you did actually reply to the person you're quoting. It's how this forum works. It doesn't put the next reply at the end of everyone elses, it puts them into a who's replied to who layout.
