Taxed the car today. Got the reminder three weeks ago and decided to put six months on at £90.75 (or £90.50, can't remember). When I went to the post office I was informed the fee for six months was now £93.50, raised in the budget for cars in the high tax bracket.
That one was slipped through without any comment, did anyone else know?

Only duty for cars over 1.6 sized engine has gone up and by £5. Change came into effect 1 May 2005. Other rates frozen I beleive (including fuel duty).

....but on newer vehicles it's now by emissions??

From BBC site:
Has the chancellor hit motorists?
"After bumper oil revenues, the chancellor has once again given motorists a reprieve.
He has promised to hold off an increase in petrol duty until September.
The chancellor has also frozen vehicle excise duty car tax for medium-sized and smaller, more environmentally-friendly vehicles.
He has slightly increased vehicle excise duty for larger vehicles."

I was stung exactly the same. Took my week old reminder in a couple of days after the budget to be told my cheque for £90.50 or £90.75 was no good.
Let's face it, we're all used to these annual increases but it's the way they've rounded the figures up that annoys me (a blanket £5 annual increase with no explanation as to how they derived that increase) If the increase was say £3.41 pa because of x it would at least sound more plausible!

I doubt it makes any difference because we'd still have to pay it. If it'saccountability that you're after then fine, but why has Council Tax gone up as much as twice the rate of inflation? Does it matter? I'd wager not because we still have to pay it.
It might help you to understand 'why' but thats not the point is it? You want to and need to buy RFL for your vehicle and you need to know how much - thats the pertinent question.

They usually do give an explanation but its usually rubbish.
They moved upstream oil companies Corporation Tax (CT) payments from 4 times a year (same as other companies) to three times a year so they get the money quicker.
They said this was to bring it in to line with Petroleum Revenue Tax (PRT) payments. PRT is paid monthly so the change to CT payments is absolutely nothing to do with it. The might just as well have said, we'll make oil companies pay quicker.
And before everybody high fives that the Chancellor has slapped the oil companies, work out who they'll pass the extra cost on to...

I still don't unsderstand why road fund on a 2.2 Diesel which does 50 mpg is more than that on a 1.4 petrol that does 40mpg
Both are Euro 4 compliant!
Smaller does not necessarily mean more environmentally friendly!

Because of the tree-huggers. They're a large section of society and are generally very politically active - almost 100% certain to exercise their right to vote.
Any party which wants to be elected to government or remain in power once elected simply cannot afford to ignore them - the mathematics of the voting system dictate it.
It's unfortunate, but a fact.

The rise in car tax is to finance the building of more road humps...only jesting. A survey of motorists found that a great percentage of us are not enjoying our driving due to humps and cameras etc. I for one can included in this group.
