pug 406 alarm switch - rickylee
Hi I'm a long time reader, first time poster...
I have a 1996 dt glx 406 and the haynes manual claims that there is an alarm switch on the centre console to switch it on or off. The thing is there is no switch!
Does anyone have any idea where this switch is?
Any help would be great.
Thanks for reading.

I've had a couple of 406 Exec's (1998 & 2002, just got rid of the 2002 one) which had the standard fit (on the Exec at least) alarm with ultrasonic interior sensors.
The only 'switch' inside the car a push switch to the lower right of the steering wheel which disables the interior sensors (if you want to leave a dog in the car etc).
There is a keyswitch by the handbrake but that's for disabling the passenger airbag.
I'm not sure the GLX has exactly the same alarm (I had a 2001 GLX for a short time - I seem to recall it had an alarm but didn't have the interior ultrasonic sensors).

I *think* that the only way the alarm could be turned of was with the remote control - certainly if you opened the door with the key then the alarm would sound. On some cars, inserting the ignition key stops the alarm, but I don't think this worked on the 406. In fact, unless the car was opened with the remote it wouldn't start because the immobiliser was still activated. Sometimes this used to happen anyway, but locking and unlocking the car again would fix it.

Hi, thanks for the reply.
There's no switch by the steering wheel either. This is annoying because clearly if I can't find it I have no alarm! May have to give in and buy a real manual off ebay.

It may well not have an alarm - I think only the top spec models had them. Also, it wasn't a GLX I had for a short time, it was a GTX.
Personally, I wouldn't bother fitting an alarm - no one takes any notice of them anyway, and they won't stop the 'smash & grab' brigade anyway (not that you should leave anything in car, of course).
The car itself should be quite hard to nick, as presumeably it's got an immobiliser (either in the ignition key, or by key-pad)?

Yeah its got a keypad immoboliser and I guess the flashing light makes it at least look like an alarm. I'm not too bothered, just would have rathered an alarm. Cheers for the help bill.
Ricky.
