The cooling fan on my wife's 1.6 Focus (1.6 Zetec, 2001 Auto) starts up within about 5 seconds of switching the engine on - I have noticed this even on the coldest days. The aircon is not switched on nor does the car have a heated windscreen (as per a recent post on this subject). Is this a thermostat problem or the temp sensor ... or something else?
Many thanks, Y.

Yeah, either temp sensor, or the cooling fan motor terminals are shorting by sounds of it, but wont be thermostat

On Focus's the aircon comes on when the heater distribution is on the windscreen. The green warning light does not come on, but I am certain the aircon is on, and the fan that you say is on, is the aircon fan.
If you want to stop this, move the distribution dial to windscreen and feet position.
This is a silly idea from Ford, but they say that when demisting the windscreen it is better to have the aircon on, but I think that the green warning light should come on as well.

It'll only come on with demist if you have the facelift model. With it being a 2001, you'll be on the cusp. Is it a facelift model?

I will double check where the control is, but I think that it seems to come on wherever it is. There are actually two fans in the engine and they are both on. It is the pre-facelift model. I will give the temp sensor a look - sounds to be the source of the trouble. Y

Have just done a test and sure enough when the engine is started on with the demist+feet option the fan comes on. However when you switch on with 'face+hands' selected it doesn't. Fan only comes on when you press the aircon button. So there it is - what strange design. The upside being that the aircon gets a regular use even during winter! Y

There you are,I knew that I was brilliant!
But you are correct, what a silly idea, it would be nice to choose when to put on the aircon.

Hmmm. According to Ford, only the faclifted ones did this. These also have the demist and whatever on the dials in orange showing you which selects the aircon.
However, I'm wrong (it happens all the time) so I apologise for the duff advice.
