hi all
is t cutting a dull area of a metallic car a good idea or not.
I have read somewhere that it does allot of damage to paintwork.
I have a car which appears dull on one side.
I have read arguments for and against it....any one got any experince of using this or any other products to bring the paint back to life?
Cheers

Car Plan does a metallic pantwork version of its T-Cut product:

If metallic paint is dull, chances are it's due to the lacquer, or rather the lack of it. Metallic paint is generally dull until the lacquer is applied.
If you're not careful, t-cutting it will remove what lacquer is still remaining.
Personally I would try polishing/waxing it first to see if it'll bring back the shine.

The link states:
"-For best results first remove traffic film etc. with Car Plan T-Cut Metallic" (before applying the Metallic Wax)
As it is specifically created for metallic paint and the wax is non-abrasive, I presume the T-Cut version is equally kind on the paintwork.
The Tetrosyl website (CarPlan link + Paint Restoration) states that T-Cut Metallic, for metallic, pearlescent and lacquered paintwork, is an extra fine colour restorer which helps remove oxidation, tar spots and road film.

A few weeks ago I scrapped past a hedge, which left shallow 'white scratches' down a wing (blue metallic paint).
Would using metallic T-cut get rid of these or would I just risk making them more visible?
|
Years ago I used Halfords equivalent to T-Cut. It bought back the colour beautifully but you could see scratch marks when looking at the car at certain angles. I didn't realise how abrasive it was until I saw the swirl marks where it was applied - like someone had taken a brillo pad to it!

When I was a lad......my dad was selling a Hillman Imp. It was quite a nice little car - 'Tartan Red' as I recall - all apart from the bonnet, which had been completely dull since the day the car had been bought. Thinking this might make the car less desirable to a prospective buyer I decided to have a go at bringing up the shine with a tin (or two!) of Brasso. It worked a treat and when the car was sold we could have kicked ourselves for not trying that before!
Mind you it was blinking hard work!
Of course paint was cellulose in those days and not metallic, so I'm not suggesting you try this at home! Having said that, I have used it to bring up the shine after touching up with an aerosol and it seemed to work OK.
I'm sure someone will tell me in a minute why I shouldn't even be thinking about Brasso and I'm sure they're right!!

I always Meguiars Stratch-X to get scratches out of the paintwork, as it won't produce swirl marks as T-Cut does 99.9% of the time.

I realise it may be difficult to grasp for those who only have a quick read of the thread, but there are two different versions of CarPlan's T-Cut product which are being discussed above.

Depends if the "white" is the primer showing through the colour coat (in which case no amount cutting compound will get rid of it), or just scuffing of the surface.
I've had pretty good results (on metallic paint) with Turtle Wax Safe Cut scratch remover paste (comes in a tube and looks a bit like toothpaste) with those kind of scuffs.

Thanks - I'll try the Turtle Wax Safe Cut

Not mine and not metallic, but a 'before' and 'after' of cutting compound, polish and wax on a 15 year old car.
