The scenario is thus:
Busy main road, traffic slow blocking the exit from a minor road. First vehicle is waiting to turn right out of the minor road and is allowed forward by a considerate driver. First vehicle edges out, checking for vehicles approaching from the left. Stops just short of centre line when second vehicle is spotted
Second vehicle (by all accounts driving in excess of the speed limit) coming from the left either panics or brakes (though no skid marks present) and ends up colliding with the REAR(!)nearside of the first vehicle, i.e. swerves onto the other side of the road.
Happened to our childminder this morning, no injuries thank godness despite three kids being in the car, although the r reg Rover 25 is probably a write off.
Now, if she'd been out onto the other carriageway, been moving and sustained front nearside damage, I'd have said this was down to her. But the second vehicle somehow manages to cross the road to have the accident; debris in the minor road confirms the point of impact.

Just starting happening, when I turn right to go around a roundabout or turning right at a junction the nearside front wheel squeals, like a rubbing brake pad, it only happens as the steering load is going onto the wheel.
Have I picked a piece of grit that only rubs when turning right.
Any thoughts.

It turned out to be a pad not coming away from the disc. I have now stripped & cleaned up both front brakes & applied the coppergrease to the usual areas.
It just threw me that it started happening only when turning right. It did become slightly worse, I felt the disc when I had returned home & it was a bit warmer than the other one.

I'm thinking of buying a 10 year old 1.1 AX (injection - I think) with 9000 miles on the clock. Yes 9000. AFAIK the cambelt is original - and just about everything else too. I think it would be a good idea to slip a new belt on as the existing one must be a bit feeble by now. Is it an easy thing to do? I am reasonably competent with a spanner (and hammer!).

Hi there, this must be one of the easiest timing belts to do, just done one on Friday and it took 1 hour inc. crank seal. but then I do them all day every day, so if you give yourself 2 hours you should be ok. One bolt through cam pulley into head and a M6 bolt or pin through the engine webbing into the flywheel. good luck.
I have to renew the car insurance next month and legal expenses insurance always included in the quoted premium.
I dont buy it on the basis that if I have a problem I would prefer to choose my own solicitor to deal with the problem as I have done in the past and on my own terms rather than have one appointed by my insurance company who may not be acting in my interests.
I save myself the additional premium but what do you folks think. Is it false economy? Read more
Definitely worth it to me in time alone.

I thought I'd buy Mrs V a worthwhile present - so what would other backroomers think to my idea??
She is 40 something - drives her Mx5 (18 months old now), a very competent driver, but, as most of us probably could, benefit from some form of a 'refresher' .
I've looked at RoSPA site - but it's in Birmingham - we're Herts/Beds. IAM site isn't too clear, in whats available.
Not looking for the track days/boy racer type stuff - but proper guidance & valuable instruction.
Any ideas??

Well, I survived & looks like she rates the pressie, too!!
Maybee it was the excitement from her other present, a DIY mushroom growing kit, still having effect??
Can't say I'm not original, in my thinking when it comes to gifts!!

Recently I picked my car up from the SEAT dealers and noticed that the Air conditioning was no longer working (they were only checking out a faulty central locking actuator).
Its a SEAT Leon TDi SE and has climate control installed, when I press the A/C button the snowflake symbol appears for a brief moment then disappears. All other aspects of the climate control are working fine.
I went to take the car back to the dealers because I thought it must have been something they'd done (for diagnostics they apparently plug into the CC unit, or somewhere very near). However when I started the car three days later at Tuesday lunch time, the damn thing was working again and stayed working all week so I didn't bother going back to the dealer.
This morning (the next Monday) it stopped working again. This lunchtime when I drove it, it was working OK.
I guess I have two questions:
1) Is this likely to be something the dealer's have done when performing diagnostics?
2) If not, what could the problem be? Can you suggest any checks ? (for info, a full service and timing belt change was carried out only the week before).
Any suggestions are appreciated Read more
Rhubarb thanks for the response.
That would pretty much fit with the pattern of when its stopped working (cold in the morning so it doesn't work, later on in the day the weather gets warm...)
One thing that doesn't fit, I don't remember it being that cold when I initially picked the car up from the dealers.
Without the A/C though the car has trouble demisting, obviously in winter I don't need it to keep cool but it is very handy to keep the windows clear.
Thanks for the advice, I'll post on the seatcupra forum also.
I have been reading the earlier articles about Coolant Temperature Sensors getting corroded and causing faulty readings. But I'm not totally sure whether this is the same problem. When cold my clio (which is a 1998 S-reg 1.6 RXE) starts fine, but, if I drive somewhere then leave it for half an hour or so, when I come to restart, the engine starts, but idles at very low revs, almost stalling, and very shaky.
It happened again today, and I let it run for about 5 minutes, didn't seem to get much better, but managed to drive back to work, at first it seems very reluctant to accelerate at it's usual rate, and then it suddenly kicked into action.
My dad had a quick look and he said that the top of the sensor connector looked ok, but the bottom looked a bit corroded on the outside, but he couldn't check properly because it was hot.

Hi,
did this solve your problem? as I am also having this kind of issue and havent had any luck with my local dealers.
Any advise would be appreciated.
Thanks
Hi all,
Just a quickie,
My mate is picking up a 53 Plate Mondeo from Carcraft tonight but the car doesn't have any tax. He rang me to ask me if this was ok and said that Carcraft said that because they owned it, and with it being a new car (to my mate) he was allowed a certain amount of time (I think 6 days) to tax the car.
Is this right because it doesn't sound it to me but I figured you wise lot would know.
Many thanks (the quicker to better - sorry to pester!)

Many thanks for that everyone. I think he stuck to his guns and is buying it today.
Again, thanks for your invaluable help.

Saw an abandoned 1997MY Mondeo this morning on a local road, clearly dumped there by it's owner, Even had a yellow sticker from the local council.
My question is can I help myself to any of the parts on it or indeed even hitch it up to a trailer and take the complete car?
there's plenty of things I could easily salvage as spares for my own Mondeos.
Technically it's theft I know...but from whom?

OOhhhhh groan...don't really want to get into this but..
Top of my head. How can you find something that isn't lost? Car occupies normal place on road where one would expect it to be?.
Police Property Act deals with found property and it is either, if of value, retained by Police and if after certain time, used to be 3 months, not claimed , finder was then offered the property as his on the condition if owner later came forward he had to return. Or, finder, where value was low, retained property from start but had to keep for the 3 months. Ignoring the implications of a poor pressed desk Serg having to find a pound from you vehicle you would no doubt get you a lug full at the least and collar felt at the most.
Problem could arise in your removal to said PS - the question of Insurance/Excise/MOT for despite being broken down under law it may well still be a vehicle.
Only lawful way I would suggest is to approach DVLA for keepers details and if they supply and you can trace (maybe LA/Police haven't put the same effort into tracing) do a deal.
DVD
Have tried Autotrader for similar but given the scarcity it's a little hard to come up with a realistic price.
It's a Renault Scenic RX4 2.0 petrol model. On an 03 plate, 19,000 miles, full Monaco spec (leather, climate etc). FSH
Any estimates as to what to advertise for privately?
Cheers

Will do! - if I ever manage to sort out a test drive for new co. car.......
rhino, I know it's easy to be wise after the event, but it sounds like a situation which would have benefitted from the oft-repeated backroom advice to carry a disposable camera
