I have a knock on what i'm sure is the underside of the vehicle. I've had it on a ramp and it's not the exhaust or steering(mechanic checked) it's doing my head in! any ideas? Read more
Evening All, having just bought one of the above (97' P-reg sport) I was looking for a decent website for the car. I have had a mondeo and a vectra and both had owner's club websites full of useful info on the car(s) and tips and stuff but for the life of me I can't seem to find one for my Passat. N E 1 know of any??

Does anyone know if VW have sorted any of the reliabilty problems of the previous Golf with the mark V?
I am tempted by one but I am put off by the many relibilty problems I have read about in the previous model.
Thanks Read more
I don't know why people get hung up on the purchase price - its only relevance is whether you can actually find the money/finance. The cost of ownership is the depreciation, pure and simple. If you spend £5k more on a Golf than an Astra but it depreciates by £3k to the Astra's £4k, then the Golf's the better buy (on a cost-only basis).

Boycott shoddy build and reliability.
Haynes Manual states
"Screw in new sender and seal with a suitable sealant". Can anyone advise what's a suitable sealant please? Read more

Plumbers tape - PTFE will do the trick.
Our Rover 114 has suffered a blown head gasket. Unusually (?) the oil looks uncontaminated but the engine block waterways, rad and all hoses were completely blocked with emulsion. There's no real circulation (the impeller just spins in the gunge) even with a warm engine.
Is there a way I can clean the less accessible parts of the engine out without stripping it down?

Thanks for the suggestion BD - will give it a go.
Got knocked off my bike today by a car from behind and broke my wrist. Car driver claims he didn't see me signal - three witnesses said they did see me. I'd pulled out to pass a taxi parked in the cycle lane.
Bike's squished and the police tell me they're going to prosecute both the driver and the taxi driver. (no sympathy for the taxi driver; he didn't even get out of his car and threatened a witness when they wrote his number down.)
What will happen next? I know I'll have to go down to the station and give a statement, but will the guy's insurance get me a new bike? Will I have to appear in court or anything?
I have absolutely no idea what to do next, apart from have a moan about people who park in cycle lanes. I think I'll just use the pavement when I'm better again. Also very difficult typing with left hand... Read more
Thanks, guys. I'll try to keep comments as neutral as possible.
Will update you further next week - driver has yet to show their documents to the police, though the 7 day grace runs out tomorrow.
Slightly concerned about this, but I believe my parents paid for personal injury insurance for the time I'm at uni, so will hopefully get enough to get my bike replaced. Will be giving a formal statement on Thursday, but the police are apparently happy that I signalled and moved out in a safe (ahem) manner, so that's a weight off my mind.
I felt certain at the time that I'd checked around me, but my memory of the event is now fairly hazy. (not surprising, reaaly, apparently I had a blood pressure of 40/20 in the ambulance...)
Hi - I have a problem with one of the front sidelights of my car. When i first switch on and turn on the lights a warning light appears, indicating a problem and on investigation, sure enough one of the front sidelights isn't working. However as I drive off, the light disappears and then when i park the car and check the lights, they are all working normally. Would anyone know what could be the problem?
My car is just under 2 years old and due a service shortly - is this something that will be checked when the car is serviced?
Thank you,
Gill. Read more
That will be a coroded bulb holder or terminals. Covered under warranty - garage should fix for free.

The scenario is thus:
Busy main road, traffic slow blocking the exit from a minor road. First vehicle is waiting to turn right out of the minor road and is allowed forward by a considerate driver. First vehicle edges out, checking for vehicles approaching from the left. Stops just short of centre line when second vehicle is spotted
Second vehicle (by all accounts driving in excess of the speed limit) coming from the left either panics or brakes (though no skid marks present) and ends up colliding with the REAR(!)nearside of the first vehicle, i.e. swerves onto the other side of the road.
Happened to our childminder this morning, no injuries thank godness despite three kids being in the car, although the r reg Rover 25 is probably a write off.
Now, if she'd been out onto the other carriageway, been moving and sustained front nearside damage, I'd have said this was down to her. But the second vehicle somehow manages to cross the road to have the accident; debris in the minor road confirms the point of impact.

rhino, I know it's easy to be wise after the event, but it sounds like a situation which would have benefitted from the oft-repeated backroom advice to carry a disposable camera
Thanks
