Hi Room
Any one got the the new Smartnav from trafficmaster? You know the one where you have to push a button on you dash and tell the very nice lady at the other end of the auto connected phone the post codes of where you are going, and a message is sent to your speaker in the car to tell you to turn left right etc whislt avoiding jams. Does it work? Is it better than the Trafficmaster YQ2? Any one got a better soloution Read more
The air con has packed up, I switch it on at least once a week to lubricate seals etc, belts are ok, where does one start? I am ok with standard mechanics but a/c is new to me, any help would be welcome, thanks. Read more
Just been to see car 'in the flesh' for the first time. It is an attractive looking car, although a woman, whos was there, said it was ''just a Focus''. Does anyone else think it looks like the old Focus?
I was disappointed with the interior. The only example they had there was a 1.6i VTR and the interior was so drab, all dark grey and black. It is also cramped in the back, in the mode of modern cars, although no worse than the competition. Nice driving position though and decent seats. The boot is also a good size for this class of car
It was shod with skinny tyres on big allow wheels and I wonder what the ride would be like on these sort of tyres. They were W rated tyres too but why they think a 1.6i, with 110 bhp, needs W rated tyres I don't know.
I also saw the new C5 whilst I was there and I was impressed with the new styling. It is a much better balanced looking car than the old model. Read more
Also, there must be brilliant deals available now on run-out Xsaras,
unles they've shifted them already.
Over £4000 off a 2.0 HDI (110 bhp) Desire on drivethedeal.com, taking it below £10000. I admit that it would be expensive at around £14000 without the discount.
Had injectors re-tipped and changed oil and filters. It still doesn't want to start properly taking quite a bit of cranking and blumes of white smoke after it catches. Once its warmed up it runs fine and doesn't smoke. The only problem is a slightly lumpy idle which occurs after about a minute of sitting still. Nothing major, just a slight cough every 10 seconds or so.
I'm reluctant to think its compression a)because i can't bear to and b) because it seems to have loads of poke when driving. Could it be valve clearances? I'd really appreciate some help on this as it's driving me up the wall! Thanks a lot Read more
Sounds more like glow plugs..

I have run two turbo-diesel automatics; a Peugeot 605DT (since deceased) and a new Hyundai Trajet CRDT (brand new this Sept - only 2,300miles so far).
With both of theme, they were very sluggish in the morning, m until they were warmed through. To get out of the house I really have to put my foot down to escape the oncoming traffic.
However, recently, I swapped to a Galaxy 1.9TDI 130bhp 6-sp manual for about a month. In the morning, it starts much faster (no churn at all - with the Hyundai it takes a couple of turns) and is ready to go straight away. No obvious performance difference between cold or hot.
So what's going on? and is there anything I can do to assit the Hyundai or to minimise damage?
Thanks

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive? Read more
The Galaxy diesels do the "sluggish" bit moving off from a cold start for the first few hundred yards as well. If you conside the Galaxy not to suffer from this, then your other diesels must be 'orrible!
Back to you guys on this to see if anyone else has got the problem and had a resoltion.
On the dash the locator lights for ESP switch, Hazzard Switch and Illumination around light switch and dimmer and level all go out after 5 seconds, used to do it occasionaly then was constant, VW have had the car for 4 weeks now and have replaced every electrical part apparently and VW technical are now trying to deal with it.
But surely something like that should not leave me without my car for so long, they've given me a loan car from VW but its not the point, I want my car!
Has anyone else had the same problem or ever had there car in a garage for such a long time with no resolution?
Cheers

Hi
you may have seen my post about looking for a new large estate. I am going to be getting rid of a silver 1997 A4 tdi (110) SE Avant, with 140000 miles on the clock. Looking on auto trader people are asking £5K upwards for similar vehicles (or older but slightly lower miles). This seems quite high to me (although Im not going to complain!) Its well maintained (although not at main dealers) the susp arms have been done, t.belt at 120k, brakes/radiator in last 10k.
What do you think would be reasonable as a private sale or a trade in ?
thanks

hi people i hope some one can help me here.
car in question is a T reg primera estate 2.0 slxi.
just lately i have found that when i apply my brakes at lower speeds and then release it feels as if the handbrake has been applied then after a while of varying periods it will come off.
indeed the brakes are being applied as can now smell the linnings getting hot. but only the rear brakes!.
on appearance at the local garage we were advised the brake servo needed replacing.
Q. does it sound likely that this problem is being caused by a faulty brake servo. as they turne out to cost over £230. Read more
Hi folks,
I am pretty clueless when it comes to cars I'm afraid. I finished Uni last year and bought a Ford Fiesta 1.0 from a local garage (H reg). It is in great condition and has been a very good runner so far. I bought it as a little run-around, but then I got a job that involves a far bit of mileage (around 200-300 miles per week) and am worried that it is too much for such a small car. But, like I said, it runs fine.
However, there is one problem, it seems to be using a lot of oil.
At the moment, I am adding anywhere between half and a whole litre of oil a week. There is no leak, as far as I can see, and there is no obvious burning? The engine sounds fine, there is no knocking or tapping and, as I said before, the car generally runs well.
Any idea what could be a the problem? I work a far distance from home, as mentioned, and it is difficult to arrange a time to pop it into the garage. I am due a service in Jan, will it be likely to survive till then?
Any opinions greatly appreciated! Read more
20w50 is very cheap oil and it would be effective to use when the car is using oil. The issue with 20w50 however is that this type of oil is prone to thermal breakdown it will emulsify and will without doubt eventually block up breather pipes etc, especially with the hot running HCS.
I have seen countless HCS engines emulsifying oil and semi synthetic (which is still part multigrade) will stop the issue in its tracks unless there is another issue such as head gasket etc.
The so-called ‘high spec’ oils for modern engines tend to be 5w30 or even 0w40 which is totally unsuitable for the large tolerances inside the old pushrod HCS unit. Some of the higher quality multigrade oils may be ok and operate without emulsifying but make sure that they are at least API SJ rated. In conclusion if it was car and I planned to keep it for a while I would rather use a semi synthetic 15w40.
My wife and I are pregant withour third sprog...and are will be outgrowing our Seat Cordoba Vario that we have had for the past 6 years. I also cart mountain bikes, canoes and people about regularly, inlcuding thrashes up to Scotland / Wales etc.
Looking at buying something larger (i.e. will fit three baby seats/kids across the back seat). Needs to be practical, reliable and safe. We paln to keep the car as long as we can (i.e. till the scrap heap beckons...)
Now the obvious choice is a mini MPV - Scenic or Zafira, but having travelled in both I am not convinced they are worth the money asked of them...Other option is mondeo/vectra type estate - but i think they are a little on the boring side...
Or, having driven a few Saabs and Audi's, someting like a 9-5 or A6 estate with a few more miles on the clock seems appealing...I reckon with care I could pay less, for a better car with higher spec that would still meet the practical, reliable and safe needs of our family transport...in Sheffield we have recommeded 'back street' specialist for both marques so servicing isnt a problem.
So - your thoughts please, plus any experiences of the above motors. Read more
Berlingo or Kangoo? Definitely practical, and good value for money.

Not quite new, mine is 18 months old.
It worked, so I renewed the subscription. If it hadn't, I'd have been asking for money back. :-)
Not familiar with TrafficMaster YQ2 so can't compare I'm afraid. A quick Google indicates that it's based on the same system but without the routing and other services you get with SmartNav. But then SmartNav costs more.
If it's still on their site, the SmartNav demo is pretty accurate to real life...a bit long to d/l and watch however.
The PDA crowd will be in in a minute so I'll go now... :-)
