Need to replace the NCT5's on my Beetle soon, but looking for a better tyre in their place.
Although good wear (got 60k out of the whole set, with a front/rear rotation a while back), the main problems with the Goodyears are excessive road noise (a problem I remember from Michelin Energy tyres, too). The new ones need good grip all year (not just summer - go skiing every year), too.
Anyone tried the Continental Sport Contact 2 ? Read more

My money stays with the Ventura (I actually have Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D2 in 215/45/17, but my bro has Venturas on his Accord - he's very pleased with them).

Pete,
I had a look at both of these a short while ago Citoen SX TD against a Scenic against Zafira.
Bought the Zafira in the end as it,s got the extra 2 seats. And although there are ( Historical)reports of 2.0 TD using oil so far appears to be fine. Reasons for not buying the French marques
amonst other possibilities.
1: Citreon and Scenic smaller than the Zafira.Zafira 7 seats if
required
2: Renault to costly and the dealers are C--P just read the
reports of cars sitting at dealers waiting repairs.Dealer
servicing costs less with the Zafira.
3: Special offers available on Zafira,s TD available OTR for
£12495 ( life model cash price)even less if you go for the 1.6( (under powered) or the 1.8
4: Clarkson ( Top Gear) rates the Zafira as a good buy.( if ever
there was a reason to buy!)
5.Focus C Max ( 5 seats) even more expensive.This was the only
other possibility
Several of the posts here about "what car to buy" suggest that many of us (who don't want to buy new) are genuinely not sure. You know you want to change, but to what? So how about swopping? Not sure about all the practicalities involved, but let's say you have a nice, well maintained vehicle. If (thru' this site) you post what you think you'd like to change to, then a list could be compiled quite easily. I would imagine that most posters here look after their cars, although nothing is guaranteed, of course. There would have to be cash "adjustments" for different values. Such a swop system would get round the problem of trying to sell privately - often a nightmare these days. Prospective swoppers could even have a trial period (with temporary insurance cover), altho' this could only work between people who live reasonably near each other. Yes, swopping would not suit everyone, and many regulars will come up with obstacles I haven't thought of, but one for discussion, BRs... Read more
Sounds a good idea.
How many people would be willing to pay a fee or commission for a successful swap ... eg. to this website. I would for one.
Hidden danger of courteous act!
If you signal that you're letting someone pull out of a junction, they might take it as a sign the road is clear and get hit by another vehicle.
Or if someone in the right turn lane flashes you out of a junction, that doesn't mean the car passing them on the inside will stop! Crunch!
It's easy to wave or flash someone into a near miss or worse, even when you're aware of the risks.

My workmate told me that his wife was very indignant with a motorcyclist who had collided with her car. It transpired that another lady had signalled her that she would give way and let my workmate's wife out of a side road. She had done so and this stupid motorcyclist hadn't stopped too. My workmate asked his wife, "Did either of you consult the motorcyclist?". Result, doghouse!
I have just taken a leap forward in technology and of course complication from a 1988 simple lowish spec Sierra to a top spec 1998 Mondeo II.
Time to revise what I carry in the boot! What would you suggest is reasonable to carry?
The subject has been covered before but it finished up needing a trailer to carry the suggested kit.
So lets start from basics.
What can go wrong and what do you need to do something about it or fix it?
What can happen to the car that YOU can do something about?
What can happen to the car and someone with a little more skill can do about it?
I am ignoring any more complex problems for this exercise.
I am assuming protective clothing in inclement weather.
I am ignoring survival rations.
My own answers produced this list.
1. The car just stops
2. A flat tyre
3. A flat battery
4. A blown bulb
5. Need a tow for a short distance
6. Exhaust box dragging on the road
7. A leaking water hose
So from the above list what is needed?
1. Reflective tabard, warning triangle and a torch.
2. Extendable wheel wrench, locking wheel nut key, gloves, plastic sacks to kneel on and put the dirty wheel in.
3. Jump leads and instructions
4. A proper set of spare bulbs. Instructions and any simple tools to access them. (If I cannot sort it then perhaps some other soul can.)
5. A tow rope and instructions.
6. A small coil of suitable gauge of soft wire ( wire coat hanger?) and pliers.
7. Hose bandage.
A first aid kit and a fire extinguisher are the two items often required in other countries and are good additions to the list above.
As I think there are few things that I can now tackle, my list is fairly comprehensive.
So in addition to the recommended checks of fluids, lights, tyres etc I would add:
Have the wheels removed and checked so that they come off easily and then ensure the nuts are on with the correct torque.
Remember no trailer and the list may be useful to a new driver.

Likewise the reflective waistcoat should be inside the car rather the boot if you are travelling in Spain.
I'm dithering over my new company car, would like to know anybodys views on the following - I have included the net cost to me.
BMW 320Cd SE (£200/month inc tax) - didnt think the engine was that good (but it had only done 1500 miles and hadnt loosened up) loved the look of the car inside and out. Heart says this one
Honda Accord Exec 2.2td (£150/month inc tax)- FANTASTIC engine, bit big, tramlines badly. Really good spec. Head says this one
Vectra 1.9 td SRI (£100/ month inc tax) - Think I'm a bit of a badge snob, but I dont think the Beemer is twice as good.
Cooper S Chilli (£150/month inc tax) - Made me burst out laughing especially when the supercharger kicked in but I think it would make me frown on the M'way after a while (anyone doing lots of M'way miles in one ?). One to keep in the garage for the weekend if I was rich enough.
(Those nasty fleet people wont let me have an Alfa :-( ....wonder why that is)
Perhaps I should take the cash alternative ..........decisions, decisions

B'mickus, I agree about the interior of the Honda and funnily enough I am waiting for a price/quote of the new 2WD TT Coupe - not sure where the kids will go ! However thanks for the prompt on the uprated 9-3 Td. My company has a 'preferred'supplier status with Saab (and others) and I have got a very good quote on the top spec 9-3 Vector Sport or Linear Sport.
Interestingly the Saab GB website still hasnt been updated to reflect this yet and I am still trying to work out the differences in the kit between the Vector S and Linear S.
Hello all
I have a golf mk III. After my rear electric window made a loud banging noise the other day, I took the car to my local garage who have "repaired" it with a cable tie and a split pin (my kind of guys!!!)
The only problem now is that when the window hits the "fully up" position, it pauses and then drops back to approx half way down. I took it back and he says everything is in the same position within the mechanism as it was before (you can tell by the dirt, it lines up 100%)
Is there any way of resetting the sensor so that it knows when the window is at the top?
Cheers Read more
Stuartli - Thanks, I have just tried this but unfortunately, it didn't work. I have held the key in the lock position for several seconds but when the ignition is turned on and the switch is pressed...it goes down.
Terrier - Perhaps "Drops" was not the best choice of words. It is the point where the window hits resistance that it goes down, as if it had detected something stuck in the open area, such as fingers etc.
Any more idea's
Thanks
I\'ve got a 1997 ford escort 1.8 turbo diesel and i\'m wanting to put a tow bar on it. I\'ve got a spare tow bar from a rover 214. does anygbody know if this would fit a ford escort. Many thanks Read more
No
You'll also be breaking the law. Any tow bar fitted MUST be approved for the vehicle it is being fitted to.
Err, um, we have a tie for first place. (Damp squib or what!!)
Due to naughty underhanded campaigning by NoDosh in the previous round, and quite possibly earlier rounds to keep the Alfa 156 in the Garage (thus consequently screwing up the voting in the final round), Big Brother halved the nominations for the Alfa, and this brought the final results near as damn it equal to the nominations for the TVR.
The Seat Leon scored considerably less nominations than both the TVR and the Alfa, so 3rd place goes to the Spanish one.
As the nominations were so close after the amendment by BB, the winners are the TVR & the Alfa.
This decision *hopefully* won't make ND too smug.
Here is a reminder of the results in reverse order:-
13th - Renault 5, (prematurely evicted for instigating a riot.)
12th - Vauxhall Vectra.
11th - Lada Samara.
11th - VW Golf.
9th - Austin Allegro.
8th - Perodua Nippa.
7th - Toyota Landcruiser.
6th - Citroen 2CV.
5th - Peugeot 405.
4th - Ford Mondeo.
3rd - Seat Leon.
1st - Alfa 156.
1st - TVR Tuscan.

I tried to do a smart alec response but the whole issue just makes me too angry so it ended up as a stream of venom. Sorry to spoilt it, NW.
Roll on the next election. Can't wait for his canvassers to turn up on my doorstep.

If it cuts out again after another few minutes then almost certainly the Hall Switch in the distributor. If it is a Bosch (Brown Cap) then the parts are available, if Lucas then a recon dis required. Its a common problem and easy to test.
