Hi
I've got a 1998 2.0 S40, and i have been having a few probs with it recently.
First of all the ABS light stays on, and when I took it to have the fault code read, it came out as "2-1-5 Valve relay: open circuit or short-circuit".
Does anybody know what this means? My mechanic hasnt got a clue!!
Also the other problem that I have been having is that the rear tyres have been wearing on the inside edge very badly. I took the car to kwik-fit for tracking, but they said that the rear wheels are not adjustable on this car! The car is also front wheel drive.
Can anybody help with these problems?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks

Hi all ,
can anyone advise how to clean alloy wheels properly ,they were blasted app 3 years ago to a polished finish, they now look clean but not as good ,i have taken aging and weather in to it and concluded that they should still look a little better than they do.

I agree with BobbyG. It makes them so much easier to clean after you have polished them.
Blimey ! Must be where all the funds for the mid-sized Rover have gone !

It was a grave mistake to send two dogs (rover and beagle) to mars at the same time. They have probably had a scrap. Plus when man first lands on mars it will be "one small step for man --- eeewww whats that brown smelly stuff on my boot"
I'd had trouble starting my car but now it won't start at all. We've changed the fuel filter and glow plugs but it still won't start as the diesel isn't getting thru'. (almost did with lots of WD40 sprayed on it)
My friendly mechanic says that it is most likely the fuel pump and says it will need to get to a Ford dealer to repair. Is this the only way to get it fixed as I hate to think how much it will cost together with towing it 20 miles!
He also says to get a diagnostic man out to check it first but can that be done if the engine won't start? Read more
Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll try and see if any of them work.
My 2 year old C5 1.9 HDI Hatchback has uneven wear on the rear tyres. they are ok on the outside but down to 1.6 mm on the inside. My franchise garage says that this is caused by deformed rear axle(s) and is a known problem, they have asked Citroen to approve replacement of the axle(s) under warranty and also for Citroen to cover the cost of 2 new tyres.
Does anyone know about this problem ?

maybe your last post was moved to technical....
Yes, there is the same question posted there, so to avoid repetition, I'll lock this thread. Post any answers to this question there please.

When I try to start the car engine there is no life at all, lights etc are all fine. Sometimes after a short while it will start, but that`s becomming less frequent now. I suspect its a fault on the alarm system imobiliser, and I know nowt about those things. Any help would be much appreciated.

Clarification sought:
Do you mean that when you turn the key, there is no noise at all, ie the starter solenoid doesn't click and the starter will not turn? (If so, could be solenoid fault or loose connection - try tapping the starter housing with a small hammer).
Do the lights dim when you turn the key to operate the starter?
(if so, starter likely to be jammed).
Anyone know the approx cost of a replacement aerial for a Rover Metro 1993, 'er indoors motor is now minus its as I forgot to remove it when putting through carwash.

Story I heard which I thought I'd share
Person sold a Merc privatly for £65k (Not sure what sort of Merc).
Buyer comes down, likes it and gives them a bankers draft.
This is taken to the bank and is 'cleared'
With this he car is released to the buyer (him being contacted by Mobile).
The following day car insurance is cancelled etc and all of the other admin things.
After this the bank then contacts the seller to say the bankers draft was stolen amd is invalid.
The buyers mobile is no longer answered.
Overall the seller is 65k down.
Where does the seller stand? Can she claim on the insurance? (the car was insured on the day of the sale).
Or from the bank who accepted the draft as cleared?
cheers

The second is a Bank Draft, which you must only take during banking hours so you can phone the bank that issued it and check it is genuine.
All my recent insurance policies have in their exclusions fraud when selling - probably also now covered by their exclusions of 'taken with keys'
My Volvo was off the road recently for about 2 weeks in 2 seperate incidents.
The end result was that the fule pump and fuel injectors were replaced, with a total retail cost of between 4 to 5k.
The cause of the problem, was never found, the fuel injectors were not at fault, but were replaced anyway.
This happened after 31k miles and over a year into the 3 year/60k warranty.
As I really can't afford that sort of repair I asked for the warranty to be extended free of charge this was refused by the dealer, so I spoke to Volvo.
As I do about 40k miles/year I tried to make the point that the warranty was worthless as if I drove the same number of miles the fault would occur after the warranty expired. the mileage/time to failure were the only facts of the case as Volvo couldn't state what had gone wrong or why.
Volvo refused to offer me an extended warranty. They offered me a £100 gift voucher for the inconveinence, but that is all.
My question is should I still argue my point wih Volvo? or should I accept the £100?
cheers

Your car has a 3 year or 60,000 mile warranty - so volvo have repaired it under warranty as expected. If you are worried about future faults then see if you negotiate a discounted extended warranty instead:
See: www.volvocars.co.uk/VolvoOwnership/Warranties
(brochure not on-line alas)
The extended warranty is just a mechanical breakdown insurance policy and these tend to have very big mark-ups - see if your local dealer (or volvo themselves) would be willing to offer you a discounted policy to compensate for your inconvenience.
Also - does the warranty on the replaced parts end with the regular warranty (as I suspect) or is there a possibility to get these extended also?
Btw - did you put your comments to volvo in writing or over the 'phone? If not already done so might be worth trying a letter (not to customer services - find the boss in the UK) - disappointed, concerned over future problems, bought car based on expected reliability, etc. what about a discounted (rather than free) extended warranty or extended coverage of replaced components....
Good luck and let us know how you get on!
What should 'climate control' do?
I think it should mean I set it to a temperature I want, and it makes the interior that temperature. I would expect it to do this regardless of the outside temperature, the time of year and the length of the journey.
I belive a previous Renault Safrane I had did exactly this.
My current Volvo Needs to be turned up high in Winter, and low in summer. I have 'mentioned' this twice to the Volvo dealer, but it passes all of their tests. They suggest that I turn the temperature up at the begining of a journey to warm up the interior, and then turn it down when the desired temperature is acheived. In the Summer it will need to be lower than in the winter. The outside temperature obviously has an effect, if it's cold outside it will be cooler inside for any given temperature.
This seems to completly ignore the concept of a thermostat let alone climate control.
My temperature dial only goes up to 27, and I'm having it on 26 permantly at the moment. Where as in the Summer it's on between 18 and 22. In previous cars (and in my house) I set it to 20 and never touch it.
What do you think?
cheers

OK didn't realise you were talking about the latest model, mine is the previous shape. Check in the manual re. fresh air vent just in case.

Wear on inside edge is likely due to excessive negative camber (top of wheel is leaning in). This usually happens if the back end is sitting 'low'. I would check ride height and check for broken/worn springs.
If you are not the first owner then it could have been used for carrying heavy loads in the past.
