When I try to start the car engine there is no life at all, lights etc are all fine. Sometimes after a short while it will start, but that`s becomming less frequent now. I suspect its a fault on the alarm system imobiliser, and I know nowt about those things. Any help would be much appreciated.

When you turn on the ignition can you hear the fuel pump pressurise?
Reason I ask is I sometimes get the same problem on my 400
it also occurs on the 200 as well.

not enough info but sound like a starter motor/wire fault
try getting someone to hold key over and tap starter with hammer/wriggle wiring, be aware car may start!!or put a wire from batt + to ign conector on starter(small lead)

When I turn key it`s as though the battery is completly flat, although all the electrics are normal with a good battery charge reading. There is no sound from any of the engine components.
thank`s. Tom.

Sounds like a poor battery connection or earthing connection to me. Good enough to power up low current equipment, but breaks down when you demand power for the starter motor.

Clarification sought:
Do you mean that when you turn the key, there is no noise at all, ie the starter solenoid doesn't click and the starter will not turn? (If so, could be solenoid fault or loose connection - try tapping the starter housing with a small hammer).
Do the lights dim when you turn the key to operate the starter?
(if so, starter likely to be jammed).
