There is an article over at The Register www.theregister.co.uk/content/69/34894.html about smart streetlamps. Now occasionally The Reg does run tongue in cheek stories, and I am not so certain about this one, but basically the Highways Agency is looking into equiping street light with wireless network technology that can provide basic traffic telemetry and telematic services.

"The trigger for the new wireless revolution is a decision - not just in the UK, but world-wide - that traffic needs to be monitored. Cars need to be identified electronically; their speed checked all the time (not just when going past cameras!) and even more critically, data needs to flow back to the drivers, ensuring they know what is going on ahead of them. In the car, monitoring equipment keeps tabs on the state of the engine. If there's an accident, accelerometers can alert the network to the crash, before it turns into a multiple vehicle pile-up. Other vehicles rushing towards the scene can be automatically notified, and a new speed limit imposed within a fraction of a second of the accident happening"

Seems like a reasonable idea to me. Read more

This is in danger of becoming the speed camera thread again so I'll keep this short. Any system that could constantly and accurately monitor the speed of all cars on the road in the UK would cost a kings ransom. Speeding fines would quickly dwindle to nil, would you speed if you knew that EVERY time you would get a ticket 100%, so who would pay for it?

Politicians wet dream to control us all all the time but not a reality.

My sister has herself and husband insured on 03 C£ Diesel for approx £200 through Directline. 17 year old son has just got his provisional and they want an extra £600 to include him.

Anyone got experience of who is the best insurer that they could turn to? Read more

Probably a bit late but there is a forum full of drivers aged 17 to 24 discussing how to get insurance prices down, and they are comparing quote with each other.

I have a VW TDi with a dead mass air flow sensor (MAF), I know this because it goes better with the MAF unplugged. Various forums have recommended a MB Perburg replacement instead of the Bosch VW part.

The MB part no is A611 094 00 48, and I understand that they cost about £45 new.

CAn anyone suggest a friendly MB dealer or online store where I can get the best price and the part is actually available?

Thanks

Need to replace Corolla's tyres, and as I do stellar mileage they need to be of the energy-saving variety...

Which would HJ readers choose -

The original Michelin Energy tyres had poor roadholding characteristics, but good life (rears have lasted 110k!). Then tried Goodyear GT3's on the front - better road manners, but they make a nasty resonant noise ...

So choice: (175/65/14, T or above)

* CONTINENTAL ECO CONTACT
* TOYO CLEANPROXES E10
* YOKOHAMA S306
* BRIDGESTONE B330 / B391

any other ? ! Read more

Right, I've now got the Continentals on the front wheels of the Civic and they've done 200 miles.
I'm not sure if it's posssible to 'review' these tyres as the only comparison I can make is against the previous pair of worn Firestones which had done approx 40k.
For what it's worth, I'm very pleased with the Continentals. I've noticed a drastic reduction in road noise over the Firestones, and I don't believe the handling characteristics have been adversely affected by this choice of tyre.

Hi, havent posted here for a while,

My radiator went yesterday, and i must have driven about 7 miles with no liquid in, i didnt notice the gauge was right off the scale for a good whle etc..

Anyway i pulled over let it cool down, and now it wont turn over, does this mean that something is stuck or warped ?

How bad is this likely to be?

Sometimes it's easier just to try things rather than mess around testing them, and this sounds like one of those times.
For £30 I'd just replace the starter and radiator and see what happens. At worst you will find the engine is shot, which is no more than you feared to start with.

Hi

I'm looking to fit a basic CD player to my Yaris (currently just radio/cassette) for not too much money. I see that Halfords do them and include fitting, but should I be looking anywhere else (chain, or specialist in the Reading area)?

I think I want it fitting for me, or is it easy?

Cheers

A friend of mine has an automatic gearbox fault on his 1990 BMW 520.

When put into DRIVE, it will go only about 50 yards before the transmission disconnects and the engine revs freely. If he then selects REVERSE the car refuses to move ……until the front end is bounced up and down a few times! It will then reverse normally.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Some Honda autos are checked with the engine off.
If I remember correctly, early 4HP22 boxes can be revved in
park, as long as the engine is started in park, and
then revved in park, without shifting through drive first. Something to
do with pressure applied to the clutch in drive isn't released
when shifter moved to park, but switching off relieves the pressure.

Yes, that's right. You have to switch off, leave it a few minutes and then start it up again. Problem is due to lack of fluid drain route in front clutch.

However, the last one I saw doing this needed a new
climate ecu. I think they're only about £700 fitted.

A bargain at twice the price!
