Can anyone tell me whether or not it is a legal requirement for motorbikes to be fitted with a number plate light? My current Yamaha YZF-R6 is fitted with a number plate light, but I was wondering whether or not it was by law that it had to be fitted. Read more
My sister has the original radio cassette in her Toyota Picnic. Underneath it there seems to be a gap, the same size as the stereo. Does anyone know if a CD player was ever made to fit this slot and feed off the radio cassette? Read more
Toyota can supply a set that will fit in the hole and plug into the original Toyota set.
Been offered the use of a Dynapact wrench to remove highly torqued hub nuts. I haven't seen it working so how do you use it and how does it work? A web search only reveals that Dynapact make torque multiplying systems used in some air wrenches but no mention of manual wrenches although my BX Haynes manual says Citroen recommends the manual wrench for some applications. Is it a complicated cogged multiplier system or is there some sort of spring tension in the wrench? Read more
I haven't seen a torque multiplier for a few years, but the older one's I have seen had two levers, one was anchored or wedged against something solid - ie. the ground or an immovable part of say, the engine. The second lever was used for turning the bolt. If I remember rightly they worked in the way of a pair of mole grips, a system of levers doing the multiplying.

You said this got worse after the tyres were changed? It could be they are over inflated. This reduces the contact patch and makes the steering light.
I've just had my cambelt changed but the fan belt has now started squealing ever since. Is this due the cam belt being changed and therefore the garage should rectify this free of charge? Read more
Are you sure it is the fan belt that is squealing?
If so get the garage to readjust/replace.
Was it a main dealer? they usualy change all auxillary belts as
a matter of course when doing a cam belt change, was the tensioner pulley replaced at the same time?
Also beware that incorrectly fitted or tensioned cam belts can also squeal as well as the water pump which is often driven by the cam belt!
In any case if it was ok before the cam belt change and squealing after then the garage has done not done something right.
HI,
Just bought a 1994 106 XND 50,000 miles. Starts immediately and very reliable but very sluggish and on 50 to 55mps top speed in 4th gear. Change to 5th gear at 50mph and car slows down, impossible to maintain speed or accelerate in 5th gear.
Any ideas of source of sluggishness?

Can't really agree, I'm afraid. I have a 106 diesel (admittedly 1.5) which goes like a train and will do a genuine ton on the level. I've driven the 1.4, and it's not very different, lower geared but lighter (aluminium) engine.
Diesels like good maintenance. Also, check the injection pump timing.
659.
i have a 1996 golf gti 57000 on clock. has been an excellent car but for the last 2 months has started cutting out intermitantly. sometimes it will start again straight away but others it takes about five minutes to restart which is a pain if in the town centre blocking the road. took to garage they put it on the giagnostic machine but it would not cut out for them so could find no fault but suggested that this fault is usually down to the module/coil, had a new one fitted and also the rotar arm cleaned but it hasnt fixed the problem. any suggstions greatly received.

I would have the fuel pump checked out.and if that is OK check out the pump relay.not saying that will cure it but you never know
does anyone have any experience of coil failure(s) causing poor cold starting on seat leons? Read more
Anyone help with this one? I own an '02 Focus 2 litre zetec (non esp) bought from Ford Direct, now with 18,000 miles on the clock. My problem is with the gearchange and more specifically, probably the clutch. Even with great mechanical sympathy while changing up or down in the lower gears it comes in abruptly with a clunk. With the windows down a metallic "clack" is easily audible. This makes in town driving a real pain and it almost feels as though there is play in the driveshafts although this is not the case. The clutch thumps in as soon as the pedal starts its travel back and this really takes the pleasure out of driving this otherwise excellent car. I asked the local main dealer to dignose it but while they freely acknowledged the problem they said they could not be certain of the cause. They were unwilling to check it out under the warranty as it potentially meant a gearbox-out job. My previous car was a Focus 1.8 and the driveline on that car was beautifully smooth.

Thanks to all for replies, good luck Richteo! There is no problem with the engine mountings as far as I can tell.
Thanks Andrew Scott for your advice which is sensible. My local dealer has said that they will look at it again at the next service but that is six months away and I don't wish to wait that long. The car is well in warranty but the dealer said that Ford would not agree to the cost of the inspection as it is potentially a big job. (It probably dosn't help that I bought the car out of town as our dealer could not compete with Ford Direct "up country") So I will try and E-Mail FD HQ and see if they are any help but won't be holding my breath. This problem does not appear to be a typical Focus problem which dosn't help. If I get any joy I will put it on this thread for your info. Cheers All, MD.
I have a W reg 2ltre Zetec Mondeo Auto (Petrol) with 34000 miles on the clock. Does anyone know when the cambelt should be changed - I don't want to get told off by John !
From Car-By-Car Breakdown for Mondeo to 2000: "On Zetec E petrol engines, several reports of timing belt tensioner pulley heating up and shattering after 5 - 6 years and 60 - 80,000 miles. Essential to replace the pulley at the same time as the belt."
On that basis, I would play safe and say right about now...
FWIW, my car is due a cambelt at 72k (diesel 156 not covered by the TSB to change at 72k) but I will be getting it done next month with the three year service (by which time 30k on the clock).
Extra £500 versus possible £2.5k rebuild? I'll flex the plastic in my wallet now I think.
coz it's taken from the rear!
