How can you tell if a car is an import? I've seen the thread about a BMW bought from a dealer at a great price, but there was no conclusion as to how to identify if it was an import.
My '03' Merc was bought from a dealer but was registered by a (UK based) fleet company. Merc tell me it is UK sourced and pointed at the VIN. Read more
Look at the service book and see which dealer carried out the pre delivery inspection. As the supplying dealer normally carries out the PDI this will indicate the origin of the car.
Hi Everyone,
Under braking I get a rubbing or grinding which sounds like brake pads worn to the metal - Ive checked all four and there is plenty of meat left on them. It seems to be coming from the rear nearside of the car - im out of ideas? Any suggestions?
Thanks Read more
if this is a light metalic noise you may have corroded thru the automatic adjuster tension spring which is now lying trapped at the bottom of the backplate or a shoe retaining spring twist top has corroded and it is the cause of the noise. Remove the rear drums to check all is well. Don't forget to by some new split pins. Regards Peter
Well I may not want to hear the answers but I'd appreciate a vote on whether £5k for a late 97R 318ti auto compact with leather (28k miles) is a bad deal as a straight sale to a BM dealer. SWMBO didn't want the aggro/risk of a private sale, and I felt that I was unlikley to raise more than £5.5k privately at this time of year and maybe it would take weeks to do so.
I had ebay as a recommendation from a friendly MOT tester, reckoned it was much better than Autotrader as a way of selling cars. Has anybody had any joy from Ebay for selling.
Thanks Read more
on the back of this thread, is Autotrader best place to sell an IS 200 privately?

About 20 mins after start of program.
Radio 4 programme You and Yours at noon covered the subject of poor paint resilience on modern cars.
They agreed with often posted here impression that modern paint and or final coat can too easily be affected by bird droppings, sap, railway dust and flys etc. Suggested that if the car is washed once a week and it is still affected by the above then the finish is not fit for purpose.
There was some supporting trade support but manufacturers did not participate.
They were asking for those with such paint problems to contact them.
Every little helps so over to all you modern car owners. Read more
My last car was a Volvo 440, L reg., bought new. When it was about a month old someone scored along the near side, headlamp to tailamp, with a key or a nail. I can't put a date to it, because I didn't notice it until I cleaned it by hand. The scratch is right down to the metal in several places, but has never caused any problem. I have to point the scratch out to people. Why, because the car is a brlliant white colour, and scratches don't show. Black or dark colour cars always show marks up badly. At 107 000 miles I passed the car on to my son, who is still using it.
Hello Back Roomers?
I?m sure this?ll be an easy one for the experienced guys out there!
I had cause to disconnect my fuel tank on my Peugeot 309 GLD 1.9 diesel (1988), creating an almighty air lock in the feeder pipe to the fuel injection pump. I reconnected the tank but the engine sort of half spluttered but never actually fired. After flattening the battery, I left it on charge overnight.
This morning, after similar rather disappointing splutterings, I decided connect a plastic fuel tank I have directly into the fuel pump, the tank balancing rather precariously on the engine. With fuel now flowing into the pump under gravity, the engine at last fired and ran!
Great I thought - progress at last. Until I noticed a firm and steady drip of diesel from the pump. It looks like an internal seal has gone, judging by the quantity of fuel leaking. Apart from that, the engine revs and sounds normal.
The only thing I can think of was there was a potential situation where the vent line back to the tank was partially crushed closed for a minute of two before I noticed it and un-jammed the pipe.
Any ideas ? would a large air lock, or closed return pipe actually knacker the pump?
Is the pump repairable or am I looking at replacement scrapyard pump time?
Any help / advice very much appreciated ? thanks in advance guys.

Thanks for that, From what I can work out, it's only leaking from the top control lever. So I'll change this seal first, as you recommended. But I guess if the saft seal has been weakend, this will show up once the top seal is holding pressure.
I have a friend who's an experienced mechanic, so the offer a few beers and a curry should secure his masterful help!
My daughters Ford Escort 1600 heater fan as stopped working.
I've been asked to sort the problem. Having looked at the Haynes Manuaul problem could be either:-
1) Fan Motor
2) Three Position switch
3) Relay mounted at the back of the fuseboard
As the fan is not working in all three positions it must be a fault that is common to all three speeds. My initial reaction is that the fan motor has failed.
Any one out there had a similar problem. I've heard that failing heater motors is a common problem with Escorts?

is the fan only working on the fastest speed? If so, check the resistor packs.
Hi -
I think that this issue may have been mentioned previously, but I can't find the post - sorry.
In July I bought a 52 reg Mondeo Zetec TDCi 130 with 1200 miles on the clock from a car supermarket, not main dealer. I immediately noticed that the car was extremely hesitant when accelerating around the 2000rpm mark. I booked it into the local main-dealer about a month later (as advised by the car supermarket under their 30-day warranty) and they 're-mapped the module' - whatever this means. This helped the problem for about two months, before it cam back. The car then went in for it's twelve month service (5500 miles), and they again waved their magic wand and remapped the module.
The car was again happy for 2000 - 3000 miles but the problem has since returned. It's now on 9000 miles and the hesitancy is very noticeable. I'm in a difficult situation now as the warranty from the car supermarket has expired and I don't want to keep returning to the main-dealer every few months to have this temporary fix applied. At some point, the car will be out-of-warranty with Ford and I guess that this temporary fix will then start to cost my money.
Help - what should I do?? Read more
I have a May 2002 Ghia X TDCi, I have a problem with starting every 6 or 8 weeks, along with the flashing glow plug light, though it always starts after four or five tries and never cuts out, also I occasionally notice the hesitancy at approx 1800rpm.
The dealer has advised to leave it alone because the problem is minor and further glitches can be introduced by attempting the software upgrade. Seems to me that this problem is more prevalent on late 2002/2003 models, I wonder if the spec was changed for 2003 model year.
Have any of you guys had a problem with clonking from off side front suspension / subframe / engine mounts, I first noticed this at 6000 miles (now 60000) and it has slowly got worse, the dealer has not been able to a find fault?
I am considering buying a Caterham 7 as a weekend plaything, can any of the BR recommend an insurance company for this type of car?
All of the usual supects websites have quoted expensive (IMO) premiums, so I think a specialist insurer is the best bet
Any ideas?
Thanks

Check via the owners club or the maker. There will probably be an agreement with a broker.
A friend mentioned in passing that her battery warning light is on the whole time the engine is running. As this has been so for 2 or 3 months and her battery has not gone flat, the usual causes can be discounted. I'm looking at the car later this week and any suggestions would be welcome. It's a M Reg 1100cc Fiesta. Read more
We had a car like this - alternator worked fine, but the light stayed on. Only trouble was when the alternator did pack up first I knew about it was when the car wouldn't start! Changed the alternator and the light went out. I suspect however that there is a fault with the alternator, such as a blown diode, which is causing the light to be on. During the winter with heavy electrical usage this may cause the battery to slowly discharge.

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....
....And I think it is the best looking Porsche made yet! ;)
I nearly agree with you - except for the 550 of about 1955. They had one on the Porsche GB stand at Eynsford this year and it stole the show for me.
