Hi
I wondered whether anyone can help me, i have some kind of intermittent electrical problem with my \'92 Golf VR6. It surges between 200 to 1000 revs when idle (have checked idle control valve and it\'s fine), it also cuts out regularly when idle. This weekend it stopped altogether and there was no power to the distributor, i have a clifford total closure alarm. Could this be the problem? Also recently changed head gasket, had major 20,000 service and 12mth MOT on it and don\'t want to have to PX my baby for something else....but can\'t afford to spend any more money on it. Any suggestions much appreciated as aside from the above runs beautifully and so fast.

I have a ninety day notice period in my employment contract. If I was to give notice and seek to terminate my employment before ninety days had elapsed does anyone know what would happen. The contract simply states that each party shall give ninety days notice for termination and does not go further.
Thanks,

Hi,
Thanks for all the replies - sorry, I seem to have missed some of them over the weekend.
I have a list of various checks and steps to take, kindly provided by a BR member, which I am slowly going through. Also, I will follow Smokie's and Richard's advice re backing up emails and files, although I have no idea how to make a spreadsheet or database. It's about time I learned, so I will make the time to sit down and RTFM.
In the meantime, I am now writing this from AOL 8.0 with no problems, so I think things may be on their way to being sorted out.
Thanks again.

My gf's BMW Compact 1.6 1996 has Park Distance Control which has just stopped working. Anyone got any ideas? Read more
From another forum - fair chance yours will have the same connections, which might be worth checking before you get a dealer to read the fault code. My understanding is that a faulty, dirty or missing sensor will activate the continuous tone....
I've recently been playing with the PDC kit from a 98 E36. The unit has two looms, one for the sensors, one for connecting to the rest of the car.
The 2nd loom had seven connections which were:
12v (switched igntion)
1 x Connection from reversing light
2 x 0v
2 x Data connections (for the diagnostic plug in)
1 x Output to under dash chime unit
In last night's Traffic Cops on the BBC, I noted that the un-taxed J reg Cavalier and the H reg VW (Polo?) which were confiscated by the police were said to have been sent to be crushed. Both vehicles appeared to be in reasonable condition. Are all confiscated cars crushed as a matter of course, or was this used for dramatic effect in the programme and in fact only unsafe cars are crushed? Read more

I sold my Golf 1.6 mk3 to my sister who when coming to drive it away found that the battery was completely flat. The AA man said that it was probably the Clifford alarm that I had installed that had drained it, but after 10 days being laid up, my personal feelings is that this is rubbish.
A few months ago the battery was drained and Green Flag said that this could have been the cooling fan draining it after the engine was switched off. (this was during the hot spell).
Is it a question of getting a new battery as this one doesn't seem to be able to hold its charge? Or does it sound like I have a short circuit somewhere? Or would it be possible for the alarm to drain it?
Is it possible to test whether the battery can keep a charge or whether there is a short circuit somewhere?
I feel I need to sort this out for my little sis so any advice would be welcome. Read more
Thanks all for the info. My sister took her car in and the result was that a new battery was needed as the one in the car couldn't hold its charge.
Is the Honda Insight the most economical car (in mpg terms) on the market?

Cheers TLucas -I was quite surprised at the drive on the Insight - not too bad and agree that the technology in both cars is awesome. It looks like I'm going to ave to do a lot of long distances of my own bat as well as driving into central london so have worked out that this is quite an economical way of doing it.
How meaingless is this?
According to the London Evening Standard, Fiat have won this more times than anyone else. Says it all really......
I don't know much about the new Panda (or the old one), but last year's (?) award to the 307 was pretty daft. It's an OK car, but not the best in its class and arguably not as good as the now-quite-elderly Focus! Read more
Ahh, but what's really the best car on the list - the most interesting; something different yet suitable for a family - yes the NSU Ro80. Dad had 5 yes five of these, one converted to Ford V4, two for canibalisation and two that ran and if serviced and driven properly ran and ran and ran....until the rotor tips went!
Loads of internal room, dead quiet and would still be modern if launched today with the Audi 2.5V6 TDi. Bring it back!!
Have I missed discussions on Electronic Vehicle Identification within these forums? I have just read the articles at www.safespeed.org.uk/evi.html and I have suddenly had a terrible vision of how the future is going to be. Think I had better consider a career in politics so that I can be one of the controllers rather than the controlled. Read more
Oh yes Pdc it is coming along with other goodies.
Why am I so certain?
Because Brussels says so.

The Merc SLK McLaren supercar is having its press launch here in sunny Cape Town. Yesterday, one day into the launch, one of the 8 was t-boned by a VW Golf, which had shot through a red light!!!! Oops. VW trashed, carbon-fibre-bodied SLK slightly dinged, but nothing requiring a lengthy [and ultra-expensive] trip to the panel shop!

shame. I could have organised you a shark cage-diving trip as well ...
They've just had the DaimlerChrysler bloke on the radio - he's trying very hard not to laugh as he says, in that gruff Teutonic voice: "Vel, ve did tell zer journalists that Cape Town is a very different city with its traffic rules and zer vay people are driving here..."
It is now in the public domain. Humberside Police have announced that it no longer has a pursuit policy - they will no longer become involved in any pursuit. Discuss.

"btw it is noticeable that in many MANY of the high speed chases on TV which end in a serious looking accident, the driver and his passengers usually escape with minimal or zero injuries..."
Seems to me that will be because those making the ghastly TV programs, which are after all just for "entertainment", will edit out the deaths, by and large. I'd love to think that would be for self censorship rather than imposed regulatory reasons.
Surging is usually caused by incorrect fuel air mixture.alarm could be the prob.but unlikely sounds like ecu if no power to distributer/coil pack.could even be fuel pump relay.let me know how you get on?
