Yes, and I second that opinion:
Go get a new 'Indicator Switch'

This sounds like the main relay ( X Relay ) If it was a earth strap I suggest the car would not crank over. It may be that the relay needs to reseated or more likely, if you are technically minded and know would to get the cover off the relay, inspect and clean the contacts with 1500/2000 grit paper and finally polish with a normal piece of A4 paper but first just reseat the relay and give it a try for a while. Having just bought a Honda with 2 months Honda warranty left on it, I wondered if anyone could advise me the best route to getting any potential problems identified and fixed before the warranty runs out.

Cheers

Don't worry about anything going wrong, it's a Honda!
I bought a new Honda in 1985 with 12 months' warranty. A few weeks later Honda increased the warranty to 2 or 3 years - can't remember which. Over the next 18 years I hardly had to replace anything other than routine serive items. From memory the one major expense was a brake calliper that seized on, due to lack of use. Still had original pads in it at circa 60,000 miles. New one was a frightful price - about £300 but much cheaper than all those years of paying for extra warranty cover.
Wish I could afford a new Honda now, and wish that Honda offered the Shuttle with diesel power.

Have a problem with no dipped headlights on 1995 peugeot 306td,
no power source at headlights, relay appears to be ok, think it may be dipped headlight resistor, but do not know where it is located. Any ideas anyone?

many thanks

Burnt out dim-dip resistor and multiplug is a common problem on 306's of that age. It's situated under or adjacent to the fusebox on the passenger side inner wing. A cylindrical device with a multiplug going to it, holding three wires. Bet you'll find one burnt out.

Let me know!

I had my first experience of 'modern' sudden & total battery failure the other day.

As it was a 36mth warranty 'Car Jack' (exide) and just 26mths old I took it back to Makro, with the receipt. I was half prepared for them to say something about a proportional refund, but they swapped it without question.

Only thing was, the price has now increased by £2.35, and they charged me this on the exchange.

Did I do well on the deal - a battery for 2yrs for a couple of quid - or did I lose out by paying the difference? Read more

Thanks, handy to hear of Makro's good policy - I did wonder a bit with it being a trade warehouse with dozens of disclaimers on the back of the receipt.

While reading a press release about the new City Rover I noticed that there wasn't any information about MPG. So I went looking on the internet, after looking at a few pages I found out.

37.9mpg combined and 46.6mpg extra urban with 167g/km for CO2 emissions.

I did some maths and....
10,000 miles in a City Rover costs £911.60 at 37.9 MPG combined
10,000 miles in a Toyota Yaris costs £685.50 at 50.4 MPG combined

Is this MPG figure for the City Rover right ? If it is should they be allowed to market a modern car thats this bad ? Read more

Read exactly what they say. Tell me if there is more positives than negatives.

As we all know, honest john repeatedly advises that no engine oil can stay in grade beyod 7500 miles. Hence, many of us routinely change oils frequently and achieve high milages.

However, car manufacturers say that the oil manufacturers now produce oils that meet their requirements for extended intervals such as 18,000 and 30,000 miles etc. The oil manufacturers own websites cofirm that they produce oils that are 'specifically designed' to meet the requirements of car engine manufacturers.

BMW says to me that their experts know far more about oil and engine set-ups than honest john. So does anyone reading this have any evidence or data that scientifically evaluates the performance of a fully synthetic oil in terms of its ability to remain in grade over for example 18,000 miles? Lets assume fairly average driving over 18 months for the sake of argument.

I am hoping that oils have demonstrably improved to the point where motor manufacturers are not deliberately ignoring the damage that could be caused to our cars by too infrequent oil changes!

This is an interesting addition to the thread - rather than our suspicions about manufacturers being a little optimistic about oil change intervals, how many of you have high milers that have been serviced in accordance with manufacturers specs only and aren't spitting the dipstick out yet?

Guy at work has just bought a V reg Peugeot 406, very pleased with it but has a couple of problems that has him scratching his head. When he turns his ignition switch on, his dashboard warning lights do not light until the car starts, then they go out. He is under the impression that they should come on at the 2nd position and then go out as the functions (airbag ABS etc) self check, the other problem is that the w/wipers park in different positions on the screen and sweep at different speeds, but he thinks that one might be cured by a new w/wiper motor.
The light fault has got him baffled though.
Any backroomers shed any light (no pun intended) on the dash problem

Probably not much help, but I hired a 406 the other day and noticed the warning lights where slow to come on. Espeically noticable with the handbrake - the light was a good second behind pull it on.

Just a very quick question which I'm hoping I can get a very quick answer to, the oil level in the Fiesta seems to have gone down quite a way, and the only oil I have to top up with is 5W30 Magnatec, this is the same grade as is in the car already, but I was just wondering if it is ok to mix the fancy Magnatec stuff with the ordinary 5W30?

I'm caught a bit off guard here 'cos I've never had any car use a drop of oil in over 20K, yet, this one has suddenly gobbled a lot up.

I'll be taking it to the dealers tommorow, my dad normally takes the "don't worry about it" approach if I ask about some strange noise, but this time he confirmed that the engine is mis-firing slightly when he heard it.

It's made the noise for a good while now, but it seems to have gotten worse recently, so I think it's better to check now whilst warranty is still good and valid.

If I get any further info or updates then I'll start a new thread as this is getting well off my original topic now, as always seems to happen with my car problems, one leads to another, to another etc!

I opened the bonnet of my Omega this morning in order to top up the windscreen washer. I could hardly believe my eyes. The battery has a padded cover - rather like an immersion heater - and something had pulled away the cover exposing a white filling which was covered in peanuts and bits of stale bread.

I can only assume it was field mice that had done this but it is quite worrying. They might have had a go at any of the flexible hoses and things which could be an expensive repair.

The car is garaged, and since early retirement I don't use it every day. What can I do to prevent this happening again? I suppose I could acquire a cat and leave that under the bonnet.:) Read more

Hello Growler!

Sadly, in my old age I am the blooming housemaid; the philosophy is the same, but I have only the neighbouring cats to do the dirty work. Which further restricts possibilities.

How's that Mustang?

Cheers and beers.
