Right....I know I am using this forum a lot but considering the experts that use it, I feel this may be useful. I am a very careful driver (albeit relatively new). I very rarely go over the limit admittedly for fear of racking up 6 points and losing my licence. However, I have been very worried by recent events whereby a friend has been 'done' for speeding at 34 mph in a 30 zone. I know what you're thinking - oh boy racer but no.l This friend is in fact a neighbour at the age of 69 who has never had ANY convictions in his entire driving career...until now. This posting is going somewhere beleive me....

I don't know how to explain this without advocating speeding (which I will say, in some cases is perfectly safe) but I have seen this product. www.tradingdirect.co.uk/system/index.html

I know it will only provide protection from camera and laser vans but I wanted to ask people's opinions of this product. Could people please check it out and let me know if it really is going to work. I understand that it is difficult to test once you get the product as you can't just go out and find a camera van (but I bet you if I didn't get it there would be plenty!) Many thanks and sorry for the long message.

P.S. No-one need lecture me on the perils of speeding - I fully understand that speed can, in some cases be dangerous and fully intend to take an advanced driving course as soon as I can. Many thanks Read more

Thanks Smokie - I will check it out.

I own a VW Passat 1.9 TDI (2000 W) and use REDEX all the time, and my brother-in-law has a mondeo TD and he has just started using, with no ill-effects as yet a product from a company called GREASED LIGHTNING he has given me a leaflet showing the "Fuel system treatment" suitable for petrol and diesel cars??? - this worries me a little, wouldn't it be better if something was specially for a diesel engine? Also instant engine treatment which claims to quieten it down ??

I would appreciate some expert advise from others who may have used or consider using (like me) these products,

Doesn't the 'detergent' wash away the 'lubricity improver'?

And the cetane booster makes it feel like you're getting something for your money in terms of extra performance.

As long as it`s tightened up to a non too hard a tolerance ie you can undo it yourself that should be ok.I don`t know anyone that torques to a man/spec/I would be surprised if you do.if you do let me know

I've relatively new to the Backroom and so far I am impressed. I was reading a few postings in the archives and seeing as I have nothing to do, felt I would have a moan.
Yes ok....an 18 year old lad isn't going to get the cheapest insurance but can someone please tell me that to isnure a £2000 (ish) car with third party ONLY (no fire or theft...yes that's right if it gets nicked, it's gone) it's just under 2 and a half grand? We searched everywhere and believe me, this is the cheapest. It makes me laugh though that when I was learning to drive, I was insured on a 2 litre Ford Focus (as a named driver ) and it was only £700. I'd have thought that was more of a risk.

Ok....moan over

Thanks guys Read more

Something to consider - buy the cheapest, lowest insurance group new car you can find with a "free insurance" deal, DO NOT CRASH IT in your first year, and being a year older and with a year's NCB your premium might be less criminal.

Do the sums, it might be worthwhile. Don't forget to take into account the depreciation on the car.

My trusty Astra 1.7 TD (Izuzu engine) seems to have lost its zest of late. 1995 and 180,000 miles all of a sudden its as if somethings disconnected the turbo. Occasionally I still get a boost but always drops away afterwards. Any tips?? Thanks Read more

Mum told me Mitsubishi and Honda issued an worldwide recall on many models in the last few hours, including her 1999 Galant. She wants me to verify this.

I could not find any UK news re. this matter. Would anyone know more details? (especially with regards to Galant)

Is this as bad as Nissan's 2.56 millions car recall a few weeks ago?

Thanks,

Having, about a month ago, bought a Ford imported from Spain through one of the car supermarkets I was told the car manual and service record paperwork would follow in "some weeks". Anyone had experience of this arriving or not? My dealer can order me the book etc or should I wait?

Thanks - just to let you know the maintenance record, in spanish, arrived this week - but did arrive and I do actually have a bit of spanish in my language repertoire and a good dictionary! No Manual yet. My local Ford dealer - Kennedy Ford - at Rotherfield have been great - I worried having bought from a supermarket they would be a bit sniffy about my import - they (granted in the servcice shop not sales) are ordering me the books I need and have been more than helpful, showing me how the odds and ends I was puzzled by worked. They certainly will get all my servicing. AND I bought MATS from them having read the saga on mats with much amusement and interest!!

I was e-mailed the following link (slow server, takes a few seconds to load), which is a pretty impressive testimony to Volvo S80 safety devices. Judging by the location of the wreck - on an exhibition plinth by the look of it - others would agree.

Scrolling down the pictures, every single safety device has been used, from bags, to curtains, to crumple zones, to SIPS and so on.

I am told that the occupants were relatively unscathed, which without being gruesome, can be believed both by looking at the interior and by the fact that the car is on aforementioned plinth, but if any Backroomer can read Chinese script, it would be interesting to learn what actually happened. Impressive though the car is, a very sobering thought, none the less.

Peugeot 406 cambelt - worth fixing?
I don't know - I've done 80'000 miles in two years, no problems. SWMBO has car for 1 week and timing belt "goes".
Changed 50k ago (1 year).

Car's done 190k on an R plate.
2.1td. GLX in white.. NOT a taxi! Motorway and A roads - 130ish miles/day commute.
ah, 2.1 XUD 2088cc engine... 12v. Not HDI.
Now I know it's going to be expensive..

Car was decelerating from 20'ish to stop to turn so should have been about 1100 revs, possibly clutch down.. Wife heard a "clunk" like "something dropping off" and car stopped. Turns over, sounds very "wheezy". Engine light comes on the dashboard, flickers once and stays on. (The "K" light).
I hoped it was ECU or fuel pump..

Towed to Garage by Mr Boarhunt. He said "compression sounds like it's gone, 98% sure it's timing belt. I've been doing this for 16 years, buy a japanese model instead - only been to one in last 6 months (and it was a flat battery)"
(This has been heavily discussed in other threads I know - just giving my tuppence worth)

My possible courses of action:
a. get Cam changed (£200)- sound a bit steep - 3.5h@£35 p.h. +VAT and see if it starts.
If not, get head off and look (£150 or so)
If valves bent, put some used ones he has in the shop.. (Should I go for new valves??) (Book time 10-16 hours + parts)
Cost hopefully around £200 (belt) + £500? head and valve work???
Car is worth (if someone buys it) probably £1200 running, but has been a faithful "armchair" to work.. for almost 100k.
What else would one expect to go? Fuel pump? (orig) Turbo? (orig)Clutch (orig), gearbox (orig) ...

b. Scrap / sell it for spares for £300? and buy a runner...

Shame - -just had new Rad, bushes, disks, pads, tyres, and
bulbs... Oh, and - Serpentine belt was changed two weeks ago due to "chirping" Could this be linked?

I can use SWMBO's car (Punto jtd) until it's fixed but I feel for her cycling 7 miles each way to work in the rain...

Thanks for any advice. I've got it on hold until Monday morning... Read more

Bumpy bump - not worth starting a new thread for:

Would this work on an HDi, and is it still legal?
