Does anybody have any experience of what the 2003 model is like to drive, run and fix. What are cost of ownership like, mpg spares etc etc..
thanks Read more
Right....I know I am using this forum a lot but considering the experts that use it, I feel this may be useful. I am a very careful driver (albeit relatively new). I very rarely go over the limit admittedly for fear of racking up 6 points and losing my licence. However, I have been very worried by recent events whereby a friend has been 'done' for speeding at 34 mph in a 30 zone. I know what you're thinking - oh boy racer but no.l This friend is in fact a neighbour at the age of 69 who has never had ANY convictions in his entire driving career...until now. This posting is going somewhere beleive me....
I don't know how to explain this without advocating speeding (which I will say, in some cases is perfectly safe) but I have seen this product. www.tradingdirect.co.uk/system/index.html
I know it will only provide protection from camera and laser vans but I wanted to ask people's opinions of this product. Could people please check it out and let me know if it really is going to work. I understand that it is difficult to test once you get the product as you can't just go out and find a camera van (but I bet you if I didn't get it there would be plenty!) Many thanks and sorry for the long message.
P.S. No-one need lecture me on the perils of speeding - I fully understand that speed can, in some cases be dangerous and fully intend to take an advanced driving course as soon as I can. Many thanks Read more
Thanks Smokie - I will check it out.
I own a VW Passat 1.9 TDI (2000 W) and use REDEX all the time, and my brother-in-law has a mondeo TD and he has just started using, with no ill-effects as yet a product from a company called GREASED LIGHTNING he has given me a leaflet showing the "Fuel system treatment" suitable for petrol and diesel cars??? - this worries me a little, wouldn't it be better if something was specially for a diesel engine? Also instant engine treatment which claims to quieten it down ??
I would appreciate some expert advise from others who may have used or consider using (like me) these products,

Doesn't the 'detergent' wash away the 'lubricity improver'?
And the cetane booster makes it feel like you're getting something for your money in terms of extra performance.
Hi, I have left my manual at a mates house and need to adjust my daugthers Pug 106 1998 1.1 cam belt tension in the morning. Can anyone tell be the torque figure for the cam belt tensioner centre bolt. Thanks Guys. Peter Read more
As long as it`s tightened up to a non too hard a tolerance ie you can undo it yourself that should be ok.I don`t know anyone that torques to a man/spec/I would be surprised if you do.if you do let me know
I've relatively new to the Backroom and so far I am impressed. I was reading a few postings in the archives and seeing as I have nothing to do, felt I would have a moan.
Yes ok....an 18 year old lad isn't going to get the cheapest insurance but can someone please tell me that to isnure a £2000 (ish) car with third party ONLY (no fire or theft...yes that's right if it gets nicked, it's gone) it's just under 2 and a half grand? We searched everywhere and believe me, this is the cheapest. It makes me laugh though that when I was learning to drive, I was insured on a 2 litre Ford Focus (as a named driver ) and it was only £700. I'd have thought that was more of a risk.
Ok....moan over
Thanks guys Read more
Something to consider - buy the cheapest, lowest insurance group new car you can find with a "free insurance" deal, DO NOT CRASH IT in your first year, and being a year older and with a year's NCB your premium might be less criminal.
Do the sums, it might be worthwhile. Don't forget to take into account the depreciation on the car.

My trusty Astra 1.7 TD (Izuzu engine) seems to have lost its zest of late. 1995 and 180,000 miles all of a sudden its as if somethings disconnected the turbo. Occasionally I still get a boost but always drops away afterwards. Any tips?? Thanks Read more
Is it the original turbo. If so it has done well sound`s like it`s due for retirement.having said that are you burning a lot of oil
Mum told me Mitsubishi and Honda issued an worldwide recall on many models in the last few hours, including her 1999 Galant. She wants me to verify this.
I could not find any UK news re. this matter. Would anyone know more details? (especially with regards to Galant)
Is this as bad as Nissan's 2.56 millions car recall a few weeks ago?
Thanks,

Having, about a month ago, bought a Ford imported from Spain through one of the car supermarkets I was told the car manual and service record paperwork would follow in "some weeks". Anyone had experience of this arriving or not? My dealer can order me the book etc or should I wait?
Thanks - just to let you know the maintenance record, in spanish, arrived this week - but did arrive and I do actually have a bit of spanish in my language repertoire and a good dictionary! No Manual yet. My local Ford dealer - Kennedy Ford - at Rotherfield have been great - I worried having bought from a supermarket they would be a bit sniffy about my import - they (granted in the servcice shop not sales) are ordering me the books I need and have been more than helpful, showing me how the odds and ends I was puzzled by worked. They certainly will get all my servicing. AND I bought MATS from them having read the saga on mats with much amusement and interest!!
I was e-mailed the following link (slow server, takes a few seconds to load), which is a pretty impressive testimony to Volvo S80 safety devices. Judging by the location of the wreck - on an exhibition plinth by the look of it - others would agree.
Scrolling down the pictures, every single safety device has been used, from bags, to curtains, to crumple zones, to SIPS and so on.
I am told that the occupants were relatively unscathed, which without being gruesome, can be believed both by looking at the interior and by the fact that the car is on aforementioned plinth, but if any Backroomer can read Chinese script, it would be interesting to learn what actually happened. Impressive though the car is, a very sobering thought, none the less.

Probably a Volkswagen Gol (no f), South American market only.
I presume you mean the new 2004 model specification?
The Primera has always been a superbly built car and even the Japanese concede that the Sunderland factory is as good, if not better, than their own home produced versions.
Actually I like the new styling and something that may be of interest is that one of our local used car dealers sells them for well under £10k (windscreen price).
