Got failed lights on both my Corolla and Beetle - how do you get at dash lights ?!

Always with difficulty: it's just a question of degree. Disconnect battery! Steering wheel will have to come off (do you have airbags? if you do you WILL need Haynes Manual, and to follow their advice): screws to remove dashboard usually visible. It often pulls out at the top then down to release. You will have to remove speedo cable and all wiring to free instrument cluster.Refitting is sometimes as much (if not more) of a pain than removal. Hint: don't forget to reconnect what you disconnected on the way out, otherwise your bulbs won't light up!
Is this new beetle, or old?
You may well find Haynes Manual a worthwhile investment to warn you of unexpected suprises : (your local library may have one)

Good Luck!

What fun - couldn't they design these things to be easier - or is that on purpose ! Yes, both have air-bags - it's a New Beetle - Dash is HUGE !
Trip to a qualified mechanic, methinks - I'm good on electrical, not on stripping cars down ! Esp. the Beetle - hate to think what that would be like with ill-fitting dash ....

The steering wheel doesn't have to be taken off to get at the dash lights on a Mondeo, granted it's a difficult job but manageable.
I would imagine many cars don't need the wheel removed to get at these bulbs.
