HI,
Just bought a 1994 106 XND 50,000 miles. Starts immediately and very reliable but very sluggish and on 50 to 55mps top speed in 4th gear. Change to 5th gear at 50mph and car slows down, impossible to maintain speed or accelerate in 5th gear.
Any ideas of source of sluggishness?

Change, in the following order: Air filter, fuel filter, fuel pre-filter (you can clean this), which is located in the tank. The pre-filter is reached by raising the back seat squab, and removing the inboard large plastic bung. Remove the locking ring with a large pair of water pump pliers, and renew the seal on reassembly. Use an OE or Bosch fuel filter and bleed the fuel system before attempting a re-start.
Finally, check tank venting, especially if non OE cap has been fitted.

I may be corrected here but some get used to how they are driven.ie the previous driver may not have driven outside of town.And the bore`s have clogged up.the way to cure it is to drive it like a petrol engine.Take the engine to higher rev s in each gear.It may smoke a bit for a while but that should clear it.oil burners do need to be used.in other words put your foot down you won`t damage the engine by doing it.As there is a governor which prevent`s you from over revving.Apart from what has been said before I can`t comment any further good luck

SWMBO has one.
Very slow 0-60 in 19 secs if I recall.
May be normal..
(if you are used to a petrol car).
5th gear is no good on long inclines .. you must be prepared to change down and rev it..
Try a diesel injector cleaner.. in the tank..

Can't really agree, I'm afraid. I have a 106 diesel (admittedly 1.5) which goes like a train and will do a genuine ton on the level. I've driven the 1.4, and it's not very different, lower geared but lighter (aluminium) engine.
Diesels like good maintenance. Also, check the injection pump timing.
