Under a new technology initiative supported by the Irish government, thousands of cars in Ireland are soon to be fitted with 'black boxes', to answer Ireland's call for a comprehensive, telematics-based, automobile-crash information network. The network will improve road safety, speed emergency response, fight fraud and reduce the cost of automobile insurance through the use of customized, in-vehicle data recorders commonly known as "black boxes" in the aerospace industry.
The data recorders will do two things. Firstly they will flash both the location and severity of the crash to emergency service providers allowing emergency services depending on the type of crash to dispatch the most appropriate expertise and help to the scene of the accident. Secondly, the boxes will provide accurate and objective information about the crashes themselves data that will effectively fill a knowledge void unaddressed in Europe until now by traditional crash investigation techniques. Public agencies, investigators, policy makers and ultimately the travelling public will benefit from access to this more timely and accurate crash data. Read more
On the back of the "What's so special about Mondays" thread which turned into "Why does drizzle snarl up roads?", I made an observation about the newish section of the M60 a few weekends ago.
Often do a 'circuit' of the M60 when babysitting a friends 1 year old, as baby falls asleep more easily in the car than on my shoulder.
A couple of Sundays ago it was raining very heavily. I noticed that there was a marked difference in driving conditions on different sections of the motorway, even though it was the same rain.
Between the M62 and Ashton-under-lyne, which was the last section of the ring road to go in, all the matrix signs were warning of a skid risk. I also noticed that there were fixed signs at the side of the road warning of flood risk. The rain water was just not draining away at all, and conditions were such that 30mph was the order of the day. As soon as the older section of the road was reached, the matrix signs were off, and the surface water was almost no-existant, yet the rain volume remained the same.
Seems to me to be quite a flaw in the construction of that section of the M60. Read more
the m62 - 2 miles of bumps are hardly better between birchwood and m60.
My car has polycarbonate headlamp "glass" and I was wondering if anyone had had one damaged by flying road debris - I don't fancy shelling out for a complet headlamp assembly in the event of damage.
I wouldn't expect so as headlamp protectors for traditional lenses are made of polycarb. Any comments? Read more
Last year my mate had a brick fall from his chimney stack.not the best off things to happen. But his conservatory roof was made of polycarb.the brick broke in several places the roof a minor dent. How tough is that ??? bearing in mind his stack is 30ft tall his conservatory roof 7ft 6ins
I just received a fixed penalty notice today for parking in a marked bay on a street without buying a parking ticket. The problem is that I've parked in the same spot for months (never before getting a fine) and despite searching have never been able to find a ticket dispenser although there are signs on the pavement advising that it is pay and display. I wondered if there were any rules on how close to a parking bay a ticket dispenser would have to be inorder for the parking charge to be inforceable? I feel quite agreived at getting a fine when I would have brought a ticket if a machine was available. Is it possible that an entire long street could have enforceable pay and display charges but a single ticket dispenser at one end - to me that seems unreasonable. Read more
There is a guy here tinyurl.com/uzj5 who received a £30 fine for displaying a valid ticket upside down.
my j plate MK2 diesel golf GTD rev counter needle has started to bounce from the rev reading down to zero and back up again, regardless of what speed or gear the car is in, and regardless of what I do with the accelerator pedal. Even does it when on motorway at a constant speed. No loss of power that I can feel when the rev counter goes down, any ideas ??? I cannot stop watching for it to happen... Great site by the way Read more
Get some new brushes for your alternator, they are cheap enough that its not worth putting the old ones back in when you take them out to inspect them. That sorted a similar problem I had with a R19 TD.
my rover 100 has failed its MOT due to insufficient damping on the suspension. It has been refilled and repressurised and the problem still exists. The garage says it needs 2 replacement spheres. None of the metro sites show this as a problem, is the garage correct in there diagnosis?
Is it possible to fit extra dampers as a lower cost alternative to replacing the spheres Read more
The rear suspension is deceptively soft under the bounce test - I was almost caught out by that when I was looking for one for my better half. If anything the front tends to go a little bit hard when the gas levels are down.
I remember some years ago reading about a slip road that joins a motorway, possibly the M5, on the right hand side, ie the fast lane.
Did I read this correctly?
If so, are there photos of this junction on the web somewhere?
Thanks,

I have a 1990 golf gti 8v (167k on the clock) with an intermitant miss fire.
it happens at random RPMs (even at tickover) and at various trottle positions and it seems to miss a beat. this can happen as a single or sometimes as a group seperated by a second or so. When it misses the rev counter doesn't twitch
I have replaced the following
plugs
leads
dizzy cap + rotor arm
fuel filter
stp injector cleaner
The rest of the time it runs great, it revs smoothly and quickly, pulls well but this is baffling me. i have only had the car 3 weeks (didn't show up on the test drive) and it is begining to bug me.
Any help greatfuly received
thanks

Solara,
On many cars a very good suggestion, but I think you will find that this engine has no Crank Sensor, just the Hall Switch inside the dizzy.

Whatever is rightly done, however humble, is noble.
Just read an article on the first page of the Sun. It says that a new European directive comes in this month. The directive states that an owner of a car can have his/her car serviced at any garage with a qualified mechanic, and still keep the manufacturers warranty.
I take this to mean that if you buy a new car you can have it serviced by the independent garage down the road, at the regular service intervals, at a greatly reduced price etc. If anything mechanical goes wrong or trim falls off etc then you can still take it back to the dealer and have it repaired under warranty.
The new law will mean that if the car has been serviced, according to the rules, then the warranty remains valid.
Therefore, if you buy as VW, you can have it serviced outside the VW network and still keep the warranty.
This could save motorists £'s.. and is surely good for the industry.
However, I guess owners will have to take a few garages to court to get any joy.
Any thoughts on this and future impacts of the legislation. Or has anyone encountered any problems ?
Cheers,

Flip side is you pay less by servicing at independents so it equalises unless you are very unlucky. Of course forcing companies to honour warranties is hardly the stuff of a free market - they will find a way round it to maintain margins
Can anyone recommend a good online insurance company/broker/website please? Read more

According to my local Volvo service manager Black boxes are already fitted to Volvos. They record data such as, speed, braking/ABS function, airbag deployment, engine data ie, oil, water temp and other stuff I can't remember. This data can also be used by Volvo to check the validity of certain warranty claims. The Police or insurance company can have access to the data for accident investigation purposes I believe.
So, would they need a warrant or a court order to obtain the data as surely the data would belong to the registered keeper?
