Question Air in fuel
Kimion

Going to be changing the fuel filter on my peugeot 306 '94 xsi in a few days. Learnt about releasing the pressure here (just leave it overnight), but need to know if it would be a problem getting air in the fuel lines?
I've been told that petrol injection doesnt like air in the fuel, so are there any precutions or after fitting remidies? Or can i just change the filter and not worry?

Hello All,

We have a 1992 205 1.9TD, owned from new and has done 102K virtually entirely of half mile stop start journeys on a cold engine, so it doen't owe us anything, but . . . Over the last 20 miles or so it has lost most of its power. It now idles extremely roughly, has poor acceleration with no noticeable turbo boost at all and won't rev past approx 3,500 revs in any gear even first. Its not massively smoky but there is certainly significantly more smoke than it has previously produced. I thought there was possibly a squeak from the injector pump, but this could be a red herring. I suspect having read the 'Sharan TD - turbo sticking?' (A different Graham, not me!) thread that the turbo has probably had enough, but would appreciate any other advice/experience befroe I start pulling it apart.

Thanks,

Thanks for the suggestions - it turned out that that the pump timing had wandered, and this combined with tired injectors was enough to cause dramatic symptoms. With the injectors sorted out and the pump re-timed it's running better than it has in a long while.

My wife has an eleven year old Citroen ZX which has developed a fault with the electric front windows and the sunroof - one day they work, the next they don\'t and so on.
I\'ve checked the fuses and cleaned the earth connections, but is there anything else I should be looking for?

I\'m keen to sort this out as I can foresee a Hamlet cigar-like situation in the local car wash in the near future! Read more

We all like it when somebody takes the trouble to write back here.

This is the whole point of the backroom. HJ provides a service you wouldn't get anywhere else, IMHO.

I hope we helped you.

We haven't had one of these before, but I was expecting it to be intended for sticking inside the glass. Not so! It is a normal peel-off-the-back sticker, so where should one, er, put it? Presumably it has some value, so sticking it anywhere outside is asking for it to be nicked, but it ain't designed for fixing inside...

(It also has the strange message 'do not affix to paintwork' - I'm baffled!) Read more

I just saw a new advert on tv for the Toyota Corolla.

It's a cracker!

Don't know about the car but wait till you see the ad.

Girl with the attractiveness of a blubber whale, at a swappers party.

Selects keys from bowl. Everyone looks away, praying she hasn't got theirs.

Keys to a Corolla.

Everyone gets up, as if they're theirs.

Really funny, IMHO.

Got my new 01 plate Shogun 3.2 Ddi at last, and what a great machine it is too, if anyone wants any info on them please just ask, but I can tell you now, it is much much better than the previous shape in my opinion.
Anyhow, after about a week, I consult the Mitsy dealer over a few niggly bits which we all suffer after buying a used car (dont we?) and they were more than happy (as usual) to get the car in and put it right for me. One of the complaints was a very slight brake shudder at high speeds (braking from 70mph), they inform me (after initial inspection) that they want it back to skim the discs next week. So it is going in, now after reading a previous thread I am a little concerned about getting this job done, should it not have new discs? I did ask this at the time and they said that Mitsubishi insist the discs are skimmed first before replacement, they said this is what they have to do for warrenty reasons (would not have thought discs were covered under warrenty).
I then went onto ask about the change of pads at the same time, the service receptionist said that they would only replace the pads if they were low, now I would have thought they would have to be changed?? They then stated that if the pads had to be changed cos they were low, I would have to pay for the pads as it's a servicable item, I accept that, but surely if the car is new to me from the dealer and has low pads..... is the ball not in their court to foot the bill?? This was just the service receptionist that stated this, If I kicked up I guess a manager may say different?
Few questions for you?
Thanks! Read more

Hi tsg.

I suppose you bought it as seen, tested, tried and approved etc.

Yes, the pads and discs are a service item and...and...

BUT.

You have just spent a boatload of money there, buying an absolute crumper of a vehicle. They owe you a bit of customer service IMHO.

If the discs are worn and skimmed, the same as I wrote in the other post applies. BE UNDER NO MISAPPREHENSION, YOU NEED NEW PADS. Sorry for shouting, it's just that the pads take up the equal and opposite impression of the disc. Both wear together now that asbestos has gone from pads.

So, a grooved disc = grooved pads.

Skim disc and reuse with grooved pads = grooved (thinner) disc again.

Plus, your brakes are a bit more important with such a big vehicle. After 1 week they're not really helping you, you know.

I hope you got a deal that has left them weeping.

Good luck, my friend.

It maybe me, or just wrong place, wrong time, but does anyone else think that modern windscreens seem to get chipped more than before?

I don't mean necessarily that more stones etc are being thrown up, but simply that it seems to take less impact to chip.

E.g. I was doing about 40mph, as was an on-coming vehicle and the little chipping that hit the windscreen on my 2002 VAG group car with Pilkington glass, sure enough took a bit of glass out.

Prior to this, a similar situation occurred and I had that one "filled". It could also be a coincidence but after the first chip repair, a few weeks later, a 12 inch crack appeared kind of in-line to it.

I guess the point I'm making is that perhaps the outer layers are not as thick/strong as before.

Just a thought.

Thanks chaps.

I was glad not to have yet replaced the screen due to the large crack. At least it's on the passenger's side and not in line of vision - yet.

I need the documentation for Solex 2E2 carburettor that equippes the 1.8l VW Scirocco EX engine. I want to clean my carburettor but I won't do it in a "open_it_and_wonder_how_to_put_it_all_together_again" manner.
Please, somebody that has an electronic version of the Solex documentation, share it with me.

The hj website keeps \"hanging\" for up to several minutes at a time. I.e. click on a link - nothing happens whatsoever until about two minutes afterwards. It is like this for a short period and then is fine once again for ten minutes or so. Then back to hanging. Note this is the whole site, not limited to the backroom.

Anyone in charge aware of the problem or what is causing it?

Not my PC/connection - everything else fine... Read more

I just did a couple more tests. This morning, my lowest result is 127ms, and the highest 672.

I was 30 last week and my parents got me one of those driving days in a box things. The question I have is which would be most interesting/enjoyable.

Driving single seater/formula 1st

Lotus handling experience- driving a Proton wira followed by an Elise.

Caterham 7. Blasting round in a caterham.

Rally school type course. Sounds like driving a souped up astra round a gravel course.

Anyone done anything similar? Which would you go for?

About 10 years ago I went on a day at Millbrook. I cannot remember the name of the company, but I think it was owned by Derek Bell. Top day.

We were driven round a rally course by the late great Roger Clarke (fresh trousers please), we did a slalom course in a Caterham (the wheel came off in my hand), we did 4 by 4 training (in a Frontera alas), ASB training in the newly launched Audi A4 (they had 6 or 7 cars there for our use)and lots of laps round the alpine circuit in various cars (including several Porsches). We had a karting race and time trials, we did 150 round the high-speed bowl in an Audi (it must have been an S2 or something), and the day finished with us each getting the chance of going up for 10 minutes in a Robinson R22 dual control helicopter. That was brilliant, up to 3000 feet, then the guy gives you the controls, you are trying to figure them out and your best mate comes diving at you out of the sun shouting "let's play war!" Fantastic!

We also hovered over the rally circuit and then raced a Porsche 968. The helicopter won.

We won this as a prize, but I think it would have cost well over £500 each if we had had to pay.
