Has anyone renewed their VED tax disc lateley? A hand written number '9' appeared on mine at the local post office - it's supposed to show that they either saw your log book or that you produced a 'Swansea Reminder'. Only trouble was they just added the '9' to the end of my vehicle registration number. Guess I'll have to go out and buy a new set of reg. plates to match.... Read more

Until now my auto Omega 2.0 1999 T reg has been great. However recently on several occasions whilst crusing the orange engine symbol light has appeared, accompanied by a noticeable loss in power (as if I was in a higher gear). However once I turn off the engine and restart, the light goes off and the problem goes away. Its happened on 3 occasions over a period of about a week, always resetting once i turn off the engine.
I thought of visiting a dealer to have it checked, will they charge to plug in the computer and diagnose it or not? Anyone got any ideas what it could be?
Thanks
Simon

Had the fault diagnosed today after the car scared me to death during an overtaking manouevre (I kicked down to accelerate and the car surged as it dropped 3 gears!). Problem was a crankshaft sensor, now why doesnt that surprise me!

Yeehah! Guess who's going car-spotting in November? :)
Cape Town is to host the international launch of one of the fastest production cars the world has seen.
The 360km/h Mercedes SLR McLaren, in line for the title of "World's Fastest Production Car", will be launched here in summer.
Before choosing Cape Town, German scouts slipped into the country to test drive hotel beds and sample the delicacies of the Cape's best restaurants, while their test engineers measured the Peninsula's tightest hairpin bends.
The car will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.
About 170 motoring journalists - divided in groups of up to 15 - will descend on Cape Town between November 14 and December 13. They will spend two days here.
On the first day the eight-car convoy will head for Cape Point, returning along the False Bay coast to take in the views from Boyes Drive. On Day 2 they will gun their motors for Gordon's Bay and travel along Clarence Drive - past Steenbras River Mouth, Rooi Els and Betty's Bay - and on to Hermanus. They will return via Franschhoek Pass.
Ex-motoring journalist Dieter Losskarn, a German who now lives in Hout Bay, put the trip together. He said Mercedes-Benz had considered Dubai and Malaysia, but settled on the Mother City, which is "just so 'in' at the moment".
The car, which will sell for between R4-million and R5-million, clocks 0-200km/h in less than eight seconds. Only 3 000 will be made and it is understood that they have all already been sold.

After a bit of a debate with my grandmother(!!) I have to ask you out there who you think are the worst drivers - the old or the young?
This may create a view arguements but thats the essence of debate isnt it!

As a young driver (20), i agree that people in my age group have more accidents than people aged 30-50, however i'd be interested to see the correlation between miles driven and accidents had for the different age groups. It wouldn't surprise me if older drivers come out bottom then.
Anyone able to provide this data?
See news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3085647.stm
I commute 140 miles a day by car because IMO housing where I work is overpriced and the area is fluffy pink dice!
The work near home is no where near as well paid and not as interesting :-(
The commute is usually fairly free flowing (the trip computer reported an average of 59mph this morning) so isn't so bad and takes about an hour and a quarter.
Now if I went by train... 20 minutes by car to station, 10 minutes wait?, 30 minutes train ride, (change train) 10 minute wait?, 30 minute train ride, 10 minute wait for bus, 15 minute bus ride to office. And the cost????
Anybody else commute long distance? Read more

Hi
I have seen loads of these for sale on eBay. What I can gather is that its a resistor that replaces your IAT sensor fooling the ECU that the air coming in is much colder... therefore advancing your timing.
Do these "mods" really provide significant[1] power advantages?
Can you expect any premature engine wear/damage?
They claim no change in your fuel consumption - but I find this hard to believe.
TIA
Moby.

"significant" is a claimed 5-20bhp Read more
Have a look on the internet (google) under "iat resistor mod". There seems to be some contradiction regarding the size & use of the resistor. The main worry so far I understand is that advancing the timing by replacing the sensor completely by too high a resistance defeats the object of the sensor in the first place & could cause pre-ignition under some circumstances. This all depends on how your ECU uses the info from the sensor - Do all ECU's only take into account the intake temp for timing? I doubt it.
I haven't tried it as yet on my 93 Orion 1.6i but its worth looking into.
Some people use a 3 position switch wired to give:
1)std operation
2)4.6K resistor in series with the sensor - for normal road use i.e. ECU is "fooled" into thinking the temp is 20? degrees cooler
3)100K resistor (& no connection to the sensor at all) - for 1/4 mile burn ONLY i.e. wide open throttle setting
I would definitely look into this, but only afte a bit more background checking.
Here is a thing that has been puzzling me. On my scenic, the passenger door mirror had a visible plastic stud on the bottom of the housing that appeared to eminate from inside the housing. My Laguna has one on the drivers door mirror, and moves when you push it. Just parked next to an Alfa, and that has a stud on the passenger door mirror.
What are they? always on the bottom and only on one mirror Read more
Airflow won't make a difference to the temperature it reads. Only direct sun will affect it, and it should be in the shade, hence the reason why it is put at the bottom of the mirror.
