MB gullwing to launch in Cape Town! - Ian (Cape Town)
Yeehah! Guess who's going car-spotting in November? :)

Cape Town is to host the international launch of one of the fastest production cars the world has seen.

The 360km/h Mercedes SLR McLaren, in line for the title of "World's Fastest Production Car", will be launched here in summer.

Before choosing Cape Town, German scouts slipped into the country to test drive hotel beds and sample the delicacies of the Cape's best restaurants, while their test engineers measured the Peninsula's tightest hairpin bends.

The car will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.

About 170 motoring journalists - divided in groups of up to 15 - will descend on Cape Town between November 14 and December 13. They will spend two days here.

On the first day the eight-car convoy will head for Cape Point, returning along the False Bay coast to take in the views from Boyes Drive. On Day 2 they will gun their motors for Gordon's Bay and travel along Clarence Drive - past Steenbras River Mouth, Rooi Els and Betty's Bay - and on to Hermanus. They will return via Franschhoek Pass.

Ex-motoring journalist Dieter Losskarn, a German who now lives in Hout Bay, put the trip together. He said Mercedes-Benz had considered Dubai and Malaysia, but settled on the Mother City, which is "just so 'in' at the moment".

The car, which will sell for between R4-million and R5-million, clocks 0-200km/h in less than eight seconds. Only 3 000 will be made and it is understood that they have all already been sold.
