I keep reading a lot about Car Supermarkets. Are they good or bad?

I understand you cant test drive the car, and haggling is pretty much not available (given that they have low prices anyway). I've also heard of cars being imports without paperwork, or dents etc, but I wondered if they get a raw deal? Read more

I got a new pre reg punto from new car discount.com about a month ago.

The price at the time of order was very good although others are now offering similar prices. Punto Active 3 door cost £5765 against list price with metallic paint of £7280.

The car was delivered on time however the car when recieved had a dent on the drivers door, which was fixed fairly quickly by a dent removal company, you wouldnt know it was ever there. The car also came with a CD player which isnt standard equipment.

Also the warrenty/service book has yet to materialise.

Overall would I use them again, probably not on balence.

I have an Omega 1994 2.5 V6 with auto gearbox which has the following fault.

The vehicle drives fine in normal drive mode, kicks down ok, changes up & down ok.

However if I put it in sports mode and accelerate with the pedal flat to the floor the box fails to change up and as it hits redline I get a warning light and the text " Automatic gearbox". The gearbox then goes into limp home mode. Once the engine has been turned off the gearbox is fine.

If I drive in the above manner but as I approach redline(or before) I lift of very very slightly the box changes up as normal. Also if I drive with a light throttle in sports everything is fine!

It's been into a main dealer that says it has a "code 41 - Hydraulic fault" when I told them it was a recon unit of only a month they then backed down saying they didn't know!

The garage from where I got the car from has had it back and adjusted the linkage but its still doing it!

Could it be a ECU fault or is it in fact the gearbox thats faulty.

Any other suggestions.

P.S. Anyone know what connections to jump to get to the gearbox fault codes? Read more

Just wondering what other Backroomers would make of this, maybe I\'m being a foolish customer, or maybe this car accessory shop is taking the mick, I\'d like your opinions!

I needed some decent cloths to clean the interior fabrics of the Fiesta as there were a few marks starting to appear, so whilst I was in the accessory shop I picked up a packet of Valeting cloths. They say that they are lint free and that\'s about it. No directions for use, or comments about suitability for different areas of the car. However, as I\'ve always been fairly happy with their own brand stuff in the past, I bought them.

Now I know that they are unsuitable for use on paintwork \'cos they contain some polyester, which to my mind, if you can\'t use them outside, means that they are to be used for valeting the interior.

But when used on either fabric or even the dashboard, they leave white fluff everywhere which needs hoovering out. Not much use. So I tried returning them:

Front Desk repsonse - \"They\'re for outside use only\", it doesn\'t say that on the packet, so he referred me to the supervisor.

Supervisor - \"You need lint free cloths for interiors, so these are no good, you should have expected white fluff\" My response to that was that it clearly says \"Lint Free\" on the front of the packet, he didnt say much but referred me to the manager.

Manager - \"Not going to argue with you, we can\'t resell them so you can\'t have an exchange or refund\" He even dared to suggest that it was the fault of the fabric cleaner that I used, but gave up when I told him that it was Auto Glym.

Anyway, he gave me the head office address and said that they could have the product sent away for testing and see if they think it is also faulty.

I wouldnt normally bother, but they\'re response was so pathetic that I\'m going to write in, the only thing I\'m afraid I didn\'t think to ask was what exactly are the cloths suitable for, \'cos you certainly can\'t polish with them due to the polyester content, or use them on dashboards or fabrics. What else is there to valet?

Am I been unreasonable, or are they being very unhelpful? I should point out that I didn\'t even insist on a refund, but merely to swap for a different item...

Advice/Opinions please!

Excellent post Rob

In the town where I was born (lived a man who sailed to sea)

Harrumph, sorry 'bout that.

Anyways,

As I was saying before my odd mind took over - where I previously lived there was a shop of which we speak directly opposite a quite fantastic and helpful motor factors. Guess where I bought all my service items? And guess where I bought all my car cleaning stuff? For service bits and parts, the motor factors could not be beaten. But for stuff like polish etc, the shop which must not be mentioned was certainly cheaper.

Just as an example, a cam belt for my late lamented Granada was £9 at the factors, but £17 at that shop.

Cheers

SWMBO has a Golf Mk3 which we are relatively happy with although i have a feeling that it might cause us grief in the near future. She mentioned that with having to lug 2 kids around it might be nice to have a car with a bigger boot whilst not being too big a car in the first place.

Are there any 5 dr hatch backs that might be better suited. I was thinking along the lines of perhaps a Saab 900/9-3 but this is almost too big (i think that she want's a smallish car to be able to park it in the limited spaces available)

Do any BR's have any advice on what might be a good car (Golf Estate, Astra Estate??) Read more

Agreed, car manufacturers are after money - however that applies to any for profit business out there.

VW have earned a reputation for reliability - whether it is deserved or not is a matter of opinion.

My own opinion is that compared to other volume manufacturers, there are considerably more older Polo's Golf's and Passats around than other cars of the same age. When was the last time you saw a Renault 19 or a MKIII Cortina?

This could be because folks are prepared to spend a little more keeping them going because they are perceived as desirable because of their reliability - I don't know.

Cars are now becoming the ultimate dispoable item, recyclable in the extreme but nevertheless disposable - the complexity of most modern cars makes fault diagnosis and resolution prohibitively expensive as the cars value decreases.

Take a look at Japan where their stringent MOT equivalent renders
tens of thousands of relatively new cars unroadworthy every year - many of which end up in Australia and UK.

I have a second hand 1995(M) Ford Escort Saloon - 1.6 16v engine (had done 60k when bought and now has 90k on it). In the 18 months I've had I've spent in excess of £1000 just to keep it on the road. This includes (not exclusively!) New brake drums, disc, shoes etc, two new sections of exhaust, new cam-belt, several sections of suspension, blocked radiator, new radiator fan, new power steering fluid tank, not to mention the locking system that's been serviced once already - now only one key unlocks every door other keys unlock varius other things except the boot!! etc. etc. etc.

On top of all that, the suspension although virtually replaced is lousy (rolls like anything, is like being on a ship at sea over speed bumps even at low speed).

Mileage is appalling and gets worse with age, currently get approx. 25-28mpg on motorways. In town uses fuel like anything.

Just wondered if anyone else has had similar problems!!! Read more

st1978, Rear dampers used to fail early in the life of these cars, and regularly thereafter. Duff ones lead to a very 'boat like' wallowing, especially at motorway speeds. Easy to replace though.

I have a '97 2.0TDi Vectra and the gasket around the EGR valve seems to be slightly leaking.
I need to change it as the car is "almost stalling" once avery morning, and air might be getting in.

I was wondering if anyone has removed this valve before to change the gasket, as in the Haynes manual it says that it should never be removed from the inlet manifold!!!

Cheers

I've just gone the Ebay route for TIS and EPC as well; one thing to bear in mind is that they are not normally the latest disks; the ones I bought are '97 vintage. Not a problem to me; as my newest VX is '95 model; but not much use to anyone after info on '98 models!

What price guidebooks are the motor trade using nowadays? CAP and Glass's were once used, with CAP being the most widely used as far as I knew. Is this still the case? Where can you lay your hands on them and at what cost?

Thanks

Anyone have any personal experience of the Renault DCI (specifically the 105 bhp version) engines? Looking at this or their 1.6 16v lump for a Scenic we are just about to purchase. I have used Citroens HDI units (90 bhp) & am impressed but have no personal experience of the DCI unit in Renaults.

thanks for any info

SWMBO had a 1.9 DCi 120bhp delivered approx 2 months ago. It was a company car, so we did not have to worry about servicing or repairs.

Averages 45mpg
No major problems with the keyless ignition. Sometimes the card has to be inserted, but it has always started.
No problems with 2nd gear.
Radio reception quite good.
Alarm goes off when someone breathes on the car.
A few minor niggles (indicator fell off!)
No problems with interior trim.

As a VW owner (may I add that my next car will be non VW) I was very suprised at the megane as a package. It is frightfully quick for a diesel and will leave by 110bhp Passat for dead. While it is not as economical as my passat (I can average 60mpg+ on longer motorway journeys) it is an all round good car and would recommend the diesel unit and the megane to anyone who is after one.
