Bought my car without the £1200 air conditioning option. As we are driving to France soon, I was considering one of those Halfords dashboard fans. Has anyone got one?

They seem quite large and I can imagine they blow around the air quite effectively inside the car. But is it worth blowing around hot air? Read more

Those bleedin fans Rob, oh how they used to cool the cab on a hot summer's day in a Metrorider! Aaaarghhhhh!

Someone pass me the emergency hammer, I'll retrofit some air con.

I own a 1993 carlton diesel turbo estate recently the rev counter stopped working at the same time the alternator seems to have stopped charging the battery. The charge light does not come on when with the rest of the ignition lights so i dont know
whether its a faulty alternator or a wiring fault

Help - does anyone know which are the quietest estate cars at motorway speeds? My benchmark is a 1996 E280 Merc (w124 series) which seems good, whilst using the 1997 corolla for a long journey is a lot harder on the ears. Especially would any backroomer have compared a merc like this with the new mondeo, accord, or other load carrier? I have recently test driven a four cylinder e class and was suprised even at the difference in that - though it may have been knackered.
Thanks for any help. Read more

Neither of my rear number plate lights are working on my mk2 golf (1990, 1.3). I tried changing the bulbs but this has not made any difference. I dont think its a fuse or relay because it would affect the normal lights which are fine.
The haynes manual is not much help although after studying the wiring diagram there is a "2-pin connector, left of boot" mentioned which is before the bulbs in the diagram. I think this might be worth checking although I haven't found it yet. Any ideas on where this connector is or what the problem may be? Read more

Problem solved. Near the boot hinges the wires pass through a black rubber hose. Over time opening and closing the boot the the wires must have broken down. Replaced wiring in that section and everything is now fine.

I have a mysterious oil leak from my 1995 CDX Estate. It has been to my local garage and had the rocker cover oil seals replaced but oil is still leaking in small but regular quantities. It is coming from the top part of the engine and dribbles down to cover the sump. The garage have been unable to pinpoint the leak exactly but think it could be the cam cover.

Any suggestions? Read more

The garage wasn't a Vx dealer (Mazda actually) however I have been using them for several years with a shabby assorment of different vehicles. The mechaninc who did the work is a mate and while I got no favours pricewise I am happy that they wouldn't rip me off.

They were asked to fix the oil leak and you are quite right that it is their responsibility. The car is going backon 7 August for the job to be finished. I have just been scouring t'internet to see if I can give them a steer in the right direction.

Thanks to you guys, I think I can certainly give them a few leads so cheers and if you are ever on the Isle of Man, give me a shout for the pint I surely owe!

The car is an M reg and has done 74000 miles. Other than the oil leak it is just fine!

Why is it that we in the UK seem to sell our cars with so low miles on the clock - unless they are all provided via the company\'s financial write off.
Most cars today are good for 120- 150k providing servicing has been done and diesel lumps do not normally free up until 40k plus - my Rover unit was quicker at 70k than at 40k. Or are we a sucker for \"must have new toy\'s\"???

I agree with Pugugly, My BMW 320d is now 2½ years/41,000 miles old and looks/behaves like it is just about loosened up and approaching its prime. Which itself promises to last a very long time.

Grrrrrr....Sometime during the 15 minutes I was in Argos at lunchtime today, some idiot has scraped my car (03 reg metallic silver) leaving a long strip of red paint across the wheel, wheel arch and door.

Presumably this happened while the other car was leaving the car park, and judging by the mark I can't believe the driver didn't know what they had done. I'm gutted - there was masses of space between my car and the cars either side when I parked.

So being a bit clueless about such things here are my questions...

Presumably no way of knowing who did this? If they have CCTV in the car park do I have any rights to see it?

Should I leave well alone and get a quote from the garage, or should I let Him-asleep-on-the-sofa have a go at sorting out? And what products would he need?

Do I need to inform the insurance company if we don't intend to make a claim?

Thanks for any help and advice, or just sympathy, that you can give.

Well it's nice to see someone is honest.

Depending on what type of repair you want; if you want a nice job that no one will notice, then go to a pro.

If you just want to stop rust etc, then touch it up yourself.

I sold a car once that I had touched up quite a lot and it was noticeable. When the chap saw the car I immediately pointed out these areas and justified it by saying that the car didn't justify the huge expense as it was only worth £800, but I didn't want to leave the areas as the car would have only deteriorated. He seemed happy with that and bought it.

Just out of interest, a similar thing happened to me. I pulled into a supermarket car parking space and scraped the bumber of a Metro. I immeiately began writing out a note with my phone number on and was leaving it on the windscreen when the owner showed up. The owner was absolutely amazed that I took the trouble. He had my phone number but never contacted me. I guess he felt that the graze on his bumper wasn't worth the trouble, his car wa also quite old.

I have an air con fault and am wondering which relays are associated with air con. There are 6 behind the fuse box but I can find no info regarding these in Haynes or on internet sites. If anybody knows which these are (or any others) I would be most grateful for your assistance.

The air con fan isn\'t turning and I don\'t appear to have a voltage on it.

1997 1200(8 valve) renault clio.Has this vehicle got a cam belt or timing chain? If so What is the recomended replacement mileage for a cam belt?

well, David, it is interesting what you say that about the 5 year interval recommendation. Out here in Jordan I run a 1996 1.2 Clio [1] with a tiddly mileage of 18,000 miles. The service book says the timing belt should be changed at 75,000 miles with absolutely no mention made of a time interval. In fact, no time intervals are quoted at all for any service job.

I quizzed the main dealer about the timing belt interval with respect to the very low milage of the car. They assured me that there was no urgency to change it and helpfully suggested that I could have it changed when it reaches perhaps 50% of the recommendation i.e. at 37,500 miles. I replied that, at this rate, the car would then be 14 years old. "Don't worry, Sir, it will be fine".

We are going to be selling the car in 9 months time. Should I get the belt changed at modest cost and inconvenience with the additional risk them messing it up or just carry on???
