After searching for a few days I have been unable to find an answer to the following,

My wife's KA has an odd judder noticeable at idle. It is almost as if the engine misses slightly but both the Ford dealership and a local independent can't find anything wrong. The judder does not get any better as the engine heats up. I have had the throttle assembly cleaned and a few other bits of the EMS but to no avail. The car has run like this for 10K with no noticeable problems however it does seem prone to develop very noisy tappets.

Please help!

How old is your Ka? The first Enduras suffered from premature tappet wear, and I suspect many had to have them replaced with a "revised" part under warranty.

Question MAP Sensor??
jaapie

Hi there,
I am new here so hello to all in this Forum.
I would like to ask a question, and if anyone knows something PLEASE let me know. Thanks in Advance.
Here goes. I have a VW 1.6L Automatic 1997 Model. On startup the engine is racing and trying to cick it to go to normal idle is impossible. Putting it in gear is a trying affair too. However once i have got it in gear it takes off with a rush as you can imagine. After going a little way it stalls and i have to restart, this is happening all the time?? Now i have read something about a MAP Sensor that may cause this,is this correct??And where on earth is this MAP Sensor located??
All help very welcome.
Thanks again to all that may contribute to this issue.

Just returned from 2 weeks in France and am totally confused as to their diesel pricing. Prices I saw ranged from 0.71 euro to o.89 euro per litre which is an amazing differance and what amazed me even more was seeing filling stations yards (sorry meters) apart selling diesel at widely differing prices.
Do they have a line in "super diesel" which warrants such a price differential? Read more

Hairyharry

Still don't understand how adjacent filling stations could have such widely differing prices - Don't the French compare prices?

Use the boots that you can put on without removing the drive
shaft. Those were the best item ever invented....

Not if you read this thread they\'re not.

Personally I have to agree with the majority vote that the split & glue type cv boots are only good for a quick bodge and do not make for a long term repair.

Just returned from a touring holiday with my 72 year old father in his Peugeot 806 with cruise control.

He thinks it is a great idea but personally it worried me sick!

I sat in the passenger seat and realised that he was totally "addicted" to it, to such an extent he was using it on a single track road with passing places!

But what worries me even more is that if he falls asleep, or god forbid, have a heart attack or something then the car will continue to go until something solid stops it!

What is the backroom's opinion? If you have cruise control, do you think that you use it more than just for cruising on long roads? Do you think that by using it you lose your concentration and your response times? Read more

I live in France and use the CC on my Accord as a matter of course on the straightish, almost empty roads in this part of the world. CC on the Legend I had before was just as good/useful. Even better if you have an autobox of course - I guess some of us are just bone lazy...

I've read varied reviews about this model, which is currently the top-of-the-range.

Anyone out there driven one? I can't find one to test drive at the moment.

I haven't driven one either, but a host of reviews suggested that the car didn't have the power to please. The 4WD sapped what little it had, and the car was pronounced the only dog in the Mazda6 range.

Looks very nice though.

Hello,

My local Citroen indie has just replaced the front disks on my XM 2.5 at 72K.

They were pretty well rusted on, and quite a lot of force and application of FBH (hammer) was apparently used. A sensible practice?

I have now noticed a slight whine from the final drive area at around 2800 rpm in fifth (approx 80mph). Any idea if/what may have been damaged? I would have thought that the final drive area was pretty robust. Or maybe the whine is from the new balancer/alternator belts. But I doubt it. Or wheel bearing?

Any suggestions? How is the "end float" on the drive shafts controlled on these machines?

This is difficult to handle, as it is probably around twenty hours work to strip down and check. And is it worth it? However, a similar whine (from 100k) on the final drive of my Peugeot 405 developed into the demise of the differential bearing at around 225K...

Apart from that, the XM is glorious...

Rob,

The damage is visible only if you completely dismantle the bearing, removing the cage and the rolling elements. Also, the removal of the bearings from a driven wheel hub wrecks them. Sorry.

There is an excellent book called "Bearing maintenance and replacement guide" published by SKF. On page 23 there is a picture of a Brinelled bearing.

The "Prince" thing was a clue as to the company I worked for.

escort man

Hey there backroomers. been reading this site for a while - excellent stuff.........

Anyways, getting to the point:

I have a 92 Escort with 15 inch alloys(they were on it when i bought it) currently running with Nankang EX500 205/50r15.
These are starting to show the signs of hard and fast driving, and not being the mosy knowledgeable when it come to motors i need some advise on what to replace them with....

I did some reading on this site so WILL NOT be going with Pirelli!!!

however after scouring the net (and reading chris longhurst's site)ive found some contestants that could be up for the job, and look F'ing mean, which is important(!!, and are 205/50r15

The chosen few are(in order of meanness):

Viking Millenium www.viking.co.uk
Viking Protech 500
Bridgestone potenza re720
Goodyear eagle NCT 5
Bridgestone potenza re50

The Vikings are the first choise but i cant find much info on them in relation to hard/soft compound, noise etc etc

im not worried about the cost at the mo, althought bridgestone 720 are going for £62.04 each at www.topgear.co.uk. Not as expensive as 1st made out.

I would appreciate any views/recommendations

thanks

Now I know there is a strong anti-caravan faction in here. As I look forward to this summer's holiday in Norfolk (not renowned for dualled main roads) I wonder is it because back roomres are so often held up by caravans on main roads travelling at 50 mph? In that case, now that modern cars are relatively more powerful and have better brakes than their ancestors, shouldn't the 50 mph restriction on main roads and the 60 mph restriction on dual carriageways and motorways be lifted?

I think our outfit would be less of an annoyance to others if it was allowed to travel at the NSL. What do other BR's think? Should trucks be allowed to progress at the NSL as well?

May I add that if you need to break the speed limit, tow a wobbly van, drive without overtaking mirrors, do it at night when there's no one around to see you pick the match sticks and undies off the road!
